I wish Matt Walls had been able to pull off another great game in the finals (he still had 12 pts and 10 rebounds), but I'm still hopeful that his clutch performances against Adair and Holmes showed the state what he can do - if they didn't already know. He's my Mr. Basketball no matter what the vote says. Matt Walls, you are a class act. It is awesome that you always represent yourself, your family, and the Scott County school system with the utmost class. It's been a great ride. I'm sure your grandfather is smiling from ear to ear from up above. Whatever college you choose should consider themselves fortunate. Mark - my assignment is complete... Truth in comparison: 1st Round District - Henry Clay #20 in KY... State - Oldham Co. advantage - district 2nd Round District - Bryan Station #3 in KY... State - Adair Co. advantage - district Region - Frankfort (this game was kind of like having a bye.) 3rd Round Region - Lexington Catholic #6 in KY... State Holmes. advantage - none (IMO Holmes was as good if not better than LC Championship Round Region - Tates Creek #11 in KY... State - Ballard #2 in KY. advantage - state Overall - the district/regional tournament was the tougher of the two IMO

There was a goaltending call where a ballard kid grabbed the net - he got it right. He didn't call a bunch of ticky-tack stuff on Walls and Mackey like he did against Adair. He wasn't great, but he wasn't as bad as the first time we had him. I think he was from the 3rd region.

The big ref was MUCH better in the finals than he was in our game against Adair Co. He made the obvious calls and not too many of the ones that could be let go. I still don't like that he always waits to see if a shot goes in before a calling a foul - give the kids some "and one" opportunities... I busted him pretty hard after Adair, but he was ok last night.

Your definition of "open enrollment" is incorrect. Open enrollment is a policy that is for students who live in the county. Scott County does have open enrollment as a district policy. That means that if a parent wants to drive his/her child to a different elementary or middle school (within the district) than the one they are districted to attend - that is ok (as long as the school is not full). There has been some moving of student/athletes between middle schools (Georgetown Middle, Scott Co. Middle, and now Royal Springs) that has made administration consider limiting open enrollment to elementary school only. Since there is only one high school in Scott County - open enrolloment is not an issue. Students from other school districts can not come to Scott County.

Senior Chris James was a member of the football team before tearing his ACL. The kid played hard the few minutes he was able during this state tournament - his knee still swells up after every practice.

Good coaches know how to work the refs. I think some fans get fired up because coach Hicks is very animated with his arms and his facial expressions. The reason referees listen is because he talks to them with respect and explains what he sees - though a person in the stands might think he's really getting on them - and sometimes he really is getting on them:sssh: :lol:

If Mackey plays his A game to go along with Walls play (and Hundley's free throws) - SC wins by 20+. Mackey didn't play like he can outside of the last 16 minutes of the finals... man I'm glad he decided to step it up when he did:ylsuper:

1st round - SC was up 30 and put in the bench. Bench was bad - Oldham closed the gap but the game was never in question. 2nd round - SC played bad. Underestimated Adair. Matt Walls put the team on his back and got the win. No sandbag... I feel bad that the folks at the Sweet 16 never got to see SC click on all cylinders. It's fun to watch when they have it going.

Ballard looked a little more human today. They played much better yesterday - while my Cards seem to keep gaining momentum. Hopefully Mackey will have a break-out game tonight and SC will pull it out.

Holmes started fouling about mid-way through the 4th. Hundley doesn't have a great FT % but he sure knocked them down today!

I heard the big Learch has the finals tonight. I heard he was bragging about how he was going to "sit coach Hicks down" to some of the other refs. I don't know what the supervising officials are thinking if he's really got this game. He was one of the two worst refs in the whole tourhament.

They never have and never will play zone. Their man was good enough to beat OJ and Patterson - I think they have a good chance of guarding the boys from Holmes too. Now if they play lazy, unfocused D like they have in the first two rounds - Holmes has a good shot to win. Rebounding is the key. Holmes shooting percentage tells me they can't win if they only get one shot per trip.

Full court pressure man to man. They will run and jump and trap too.

Rice is very good at finding an open spot in the zone. Sometimes it was in the middle, but most of the time he snuck in behind the defense - 22 would penetrate and dump it down to Rice. The few times SL threw it into the post they scored. Their kids seemed to want to play outside - instead of posting up and using their height. Henderson was in Profitt's jock - plain and simple.

I hope SC brings their A game tomorrow. Through the first two games I would give them a D- so far. Whoever wins the rebounding battle will win this game. I don't think Holmes can beat SC if they only get one shot attempt per trip. If SC lets them get to the offensive glass - they will be in trouble. There are some great match-ups in this game: Walls v/s Henderson and Hill v/s Mackey and Lee v/s Rice should be great to watch. Jimmy Warren's defense on Jefferson will also be a big key. Jefferson looks to beat his man to set up his teammates. If Warren can contain Jefferson - the teammates don't have to leave their man to help... It should be a great game.

Observations: If my Cards don't play better tomorrow morning than they have in the first two rounds - we'll be heading home around noon. I think the kids didn't have enough respect for Adair Co. The PG was tough and very difficult to contain. Ballou hit some very tough shots. SC seemed out of rhythm all game - as they did in the first round. It was nice to see Walls hit some shots. He was determined to win this game. His teammates need to join him! I hope the real SC shows up in the morning. The folks at Rupp deserve to see them play well at least once (twice would be nice.) BTW - the tall official was terrible - about 7 or 8 bad calls against SC and about 4 or 5 bad calls against Adair... The ones against SC just happened to be against Mackey and Walls. SC had a bad game and so did the official that looked like Hermon Munster... Survive and advance... and that's all my cards did today. I'm glad we have had a good draw so far.

This game was played ABOVE the rim. There were no free shots around the basket - for either side.

Congrats to GRC. Good win for them - and it was a total team effort. If they rebound they can beat Ballard. Ballard is not a great shooting team - they get a lot of put-backs. GRC will have to shoot better from the FT line to pull it off... good luck Gold

After watching Holmes and Paducah Tilghman play above the rim all night last night this game this game was hard to watch. The refs were fine. #10 for SV had an attitude problem. It almost seemed like they thought Elliott wasn't supposed to play them hard. :sleep: :sleep: :sleep: :sleep: :sleep: :sleep:

I thought my Cards played pretty bad today. They never got into a flow. I can't remember the last time Mackey and Walls both had less than 10??? It was a win and advance, but it was not a quality Scott Co. performance. Hopefully the boys are saving that for a little later in the tournament.
