Scott Co. v/s Oldham is an interesting match up because of the history between these programs - and the anti-Scott Co. attitude of the 8th Region. Did you know that Coach Hicks never won coach of the year in the 8th? He was 1998 KHSAA state coach of the year, but not in the 8th region. Forrest is a good coach and Oldham has a good program - but this game isn't just two teams from opposite ends of the state trying to get a win. This one is personal. It should be worth watching.

Observations: 1. YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE 2. Tates Creek was tough and had a good game plan. Coach Covington and his staff had their team ready, focused, and disciplined. 3. Both teams came out tight. 4. The game was pretty physical. Not many fouls were called the entire game. 5. Mackey and Walls stepped up when it counted. 6. The 11th region is the toughest in the state. 7. The Scott Co. bus got a police and fire truck escort from the county line to the gym where about 300 fans were waiting to start the pep rally. 8. There was a SEA of red at the game tonight. SC fans took up the ENTIRE side of the arena and the student section filled up the endzone. 9. Tates Creek had good fan support tonight too - for a city school. (It was about 2 red shirts for every 1 maroon) 10. YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Good post - but I was hoping this one was gone to the 2nd page - not to be heard from again. Total cheap shot by the reporter. He's probably got a nephew on the 2nd grade team Ron coached who didn't get to play enough. Kinmon loves Grant County - played there with heart and coaches with heart. GC is lucky to have some stability in the program. It could easily be the revolving door that some of these other places have - but Ron has given stability to a place many would have left for greener pastures - especially after Tyler Jones year. I'm sure he had a few offers. GC should appreciate what they've got - I don't think too many high caliber coaches would be lining up to take Ron's place.

I got a couple of PMs about the speed comment - Guys - I love the kid. I think he's a hard worker and a great person and an outstanding shooter. I'm really glad he found a place where he could be a major contributor on a team going to Rupp! It's awesome. I meant no disrespect to Tyler. I am 100% happy that it has worked out for him. If my Cards don't come to play tonight - Tyler will be playing at Rupp and we'll be watching from the cheap seats.

Well, tonight is the night... Here are my thoughts going into the game: Mackey and Walls need to dominate the smaller guards from Creek. Jimmy Warren's ball pressure on Spalding will be a big key Portwood's jumper will determine if TC can focus totally on Walls and Mackey or not. He's the difference maker - when he brings his A game. Shot selection could do in the Cards. When it's all said and done - I'm putting my $$$ on Matt Walls to get the job done. He won't let them forget the regional finals the last two years. They'll be ready. GO CARDS!

There was a Tyler Maynard who left Scott County after his Soph year. He was a great kid with a sweet J - just a touch slow to play big minutes at SC - is this the same kid? I'm very happy for him if it is. Congrats Elliott.

That's a good strategy - and Creek has the athletes to possibly do it. I hope Portwood, Mackey, Lee, Hundley and others are up for the challenge.

I wonder if Tates Creek would just come to our place tomorrow night? Why should we drive all the way to Richmond? It's been scientifically proven that the better team will win anyway - by GRC pulling it off yesterday, so what difference should it make to Coach Covington where we play?

This is my post on this issue - taken directly from the other thread. Here's an outsider's take on the "homecourt advantage" in the 10th... At the 11th region tournament at EKU - Scott Co. nor Lex Cath were allowed to take a basketball onto the floor prior to 20 minutes til game time. This rule is in place so that the teams that play the first game of the day do not get extra time to shoot around over the teams that play the later games. Just a few extra minutes shooting on the goals might cause one team to have an advantage over another. I realize that there isn't any other place that is big enough to hold the 10th region tournament - so it should be there (for necessity, not tradition)... but to act like that's not an advantage for Mason is simply denying the truth. GRC being good enough to overcome that advantage today does not mean that there isn't an advantage.

In the semi-final game they had #3 guarding Shelvin Mack (BS's PG) - full court in total denial. It worked pretty well and caused Jaron Jones to bring the ball up the floor early in the game. I also think they'll play quite a bit of zone - try to get the lead - and be patient on offense like they were against both Madison Central and Station. Watkins is long and athletic for sure. TC has a lot of weapons and they seem to understand their role on the team.

The coaches and ADs of the 11th region think it matters - I didn't make the rule. Sandman must be a post player - those are the ones who adjusting to depth perception in various gyms doesn't matter to... :laugh:
