I agree that it is an advantage to have additional coaches - but if a head coach can get other coaches to help, why should he be penalized? If all head coaches have the same opportunity. Did you know that only 3 coaches on the Scott Co. staff are paid? Hicks, Tim Glenn (JV) and Dudley Mattingly (Frosh) The rest volunteer (coach Hicks cooks for them and lets them use his pool and gets them some shoes and SC shirts, but they do it for the love of the game.) I can see limiting the number of PAID assistants, but not with limiting the number of coaches.

:thumb: I agree that # of coaches should not matter. Heaven forbid that there might be more than 3 or 4 adult males who want to have a positive influence on kids through sports...

This is probably the most inconsistant call in the high school game. The rule says that 6' is the "closely guarded" distance - that means if someone is at the top of the key his defender could be standing on the FT line and the count should stay on. Most referees interpret the distance as MUCH closer than the rule book. I forget which game it was, but in the state tournament there was a 5 second call made when the offensive player had done a "step back" move. Most refs would have started the count again, but this guy implemented the rule as written - 5 second violation.

I heard that part of the reason they signed Preston was that he totally whipped Sosa the day he played with UL's players.

Congrats to Preston. I think UL/Pitino style is a good fit for what Preston brings to the table. It's always good to see the in-state talent given a chance at the high major schools!

Rebecca acted suprised tonight at the big shin dig when they announced she had won the award. Apparantly her father told her that their computer had a virus and not to touch it when she got home from school today. It was a nice addition to the already planned Community State Tournament Champion Celebration for the boys team. The Mayor and Senator and Representative and Superintendent and other honored guests had great things to say about Rebecca's accomplishments. Great player - great girl. Best of luck at UNC.

I thought his inability to shoot was exploited in the tournament. I think he was only 2/9 in the championship game...

Mr. Basketball is scheduled to be announced April 10th. Miss Basketball is scheduled for April 5. I'm hoping there are two press conferences at Scott Co. High.

One of my favorite Coach Hicks philosophy is "Take winning and do good things with it. Take losing and learn from it."

There are a LOT of good juniors in the 11th this year: Mackey - Scott Co; Mack - Bryan Station; Moses - Henry Clay; Novosel - Catholic; Sparks - Tates Creek; Morris - Madison Central It will be another great year of hoops in Central KY!

The blanket statement "A lot of coaches wish they had the talent you guys have..." with no mention of how he guides and focuses that talent seems a bit backhanded to me. It seemed to imply that there are a lot of coaches who could do what Coach Hicks does - like his influence on this team was insignificant. Maybe I just took the post wrong. I like how you keep us informed of things going on out west - I have some family in Paducah - but this isn't the first cold post regarding my beloved Cards... Again, maybe I took those posts wrong too...

I agree - and I gave credit to other coaches in the program. Since there is only one high school in SC we are all in the same program. There are great feeder programs here and the youngest AAU league starts at 6U (that's 6months and under) A lot of that excitement stems from the success and dedication of Coach Hicks... It all goes together.

It's no more of a slam than to belittle Coach Hicks ability simply because SC is a larger school. But yes, I was trying to needle you a bit. Really it was just an observation. I think Coach Hicks could have won the state with Ballard's team, Holmes' team, and would have given it a run with Tilghman if he'd been there a few years because they would be able to do more than just run and jump. I'd be willing to bet there are a couple of good guards walking the hallways at PT. No proof other than what I've played against when I've visited Noble Park though...

I'll give you that Mackey is a natural talent, Lee is a natural athlete. The rest of the guys on this team are good because they were developed by Coach Hicks and the other coaches in the program. The 3 kids at Tilghman have way more athletic ability than anyone but Mackey on SC's team... Coach Hicks would have made sure he developed a couple of guards to be able to dribble and shoot to go along with them. The great coaches get the most out of the talent they have.

Coach Hicks started at Evarts and worked his way to SC. That says a lot.

I remember that name - Spencer Graeter - now that you mention it. Does that mean that Chiles was the 6th man? That was a talented team they had in 99.
