I don't know the dad, but if he wasn't getting enough shots at HC - he might have come to the wrong place... and might is a very kind word. Mackey, Portwood, Hundley, Phares, and Lee could easily be the starting 5 on this team. Jordan Adams would have been ahead of Gelawn too. Marcus Birchfield also gave the Cards some quality minutes in the state tournament last year. I haven't even mentioned Adrian Givens (Goose Givens' nephew.) There is a lot of talent in G-town this year. If the kid (and dad) want to be a part of winning a State Championship he may have come to the right spot - if he wants to be selfish and worry about shot attempts and points per game he should have gone elsewhere. Coach Hicks has a talent for getting kids to buy into the system (ie - Hundley, Jones, Alsop and Walls, Mackey) I'd bet that G-lawn figures it out. If you've got to have a problem - too many good players is a good one to have. BTW - he did have a quote in the G-town paper about wanting to average at least 16 points per game. I don't always trust the quotes in there, but it's in line with what Gumbo is saying.

I think you'd have to word it "The best team on that day - won." I don't think there were many days when Clark was better than Mason last year. They were on the one day that it counted most. It's not easy to be the better team on any day on someone else's home court. GRC deserves even higher praise for being able to pull it off. It does matter where the game is played. I can assure you I play better at Georgetown College than I do anyplace else. That's because I've played there and I'm used to all the little things in the gym. I have a much better chance of beating a superior opponent in these places than I do anywhere else because I know that if you shoot from the left corner on the side where the band sits during a day game you're going to get the sun in your eyes where there are chips in the paint on the window. The section of floor in front of the home team's bench has a dead spot where a LOT of visiting teams make unforced turnovers. Every gym has its little quirks that can influence the outcome of a basketball game. It makes a big difference where the game is played.

Folks who use this logic have never played enough on one court to call it their own. The arguments about Montgomery not being big enough have some validity, but the "there is no home court advantage" thing is bogus. I think it would be great if it rotated from NKU (when the Campbell Co. district votes), The Fieldhouse (when it's Mason's district's turn), Montgomery Co. (when it's Clark/Montgomery's turn), and Harrison's district can pick the Fieldhouse too so they can make the most $$$ possible. BTW - I believe most people would agree that Mason was the best team last year too even though they didn't win it. Clark was good - and had a great night, but to say "the best team won" - I don't know that that's true. Maybe the best team that night... but I'd guess Mason would have won 7 or 8 out of 10. Using this logic - your argument has little merritt because the best team didn't win. Food for thought.

I don't either and it's a shame a kid has to lie and say that he/she is transferring for academic reasons at all. If the family moves - who cares what the reason is - no one should (but I guess a lot of folks do).

The problem with this quote is that what a common person may consider "legitimate" may not be the same definition the KHSAA Board of Control uses...

In my humble opinion the only thing the KHSAA has been consistent in is their continual policy of "guilty until proven innocent". They continue to punish kids for the actions of adults. These kids only get to participate in high school athletics once and yet the KHSAA rules kids ineligible at the drop of a hat. Here's an idea - if a family thinks a student/athlete would be better off going to and playing for a different school and the parents are willing to move/provide transportation - more power to them - eligible. If there is proof of recruiting the SCHOOL and the COACH should be the ones punished. The whole thing feels like a dictatorship - not a democracy.

I believe it's district policy that administrators are not allowed to coach in Scott Co. My guess is that Jo Pat will be so busy with administrative duties that he wouldn't have time to coach even if he wanted to.

Tates Creek, Harrison Co. have new coaches Earlier this week, Harrison Co. approved the hiring of Mike Reitz, who will replace Lee Kendall, as its boys’ basketball coach. Reitz’s hiring marks his return to the hilltop, where he was coach from 1988 to 2001. Reitz left Harrison Co. to coach at Clark Co. For the past three seasons he has been the head coach at Campbell Co. Tates Creek coach Joe Pat Covington resigned earlier this week after accepting a position at Scott Co. Covington, a Georgetown native, will be an associate principal at Scott Co. High School. Covington has been on the Tates Creek sidelines for the past 14 years. He’s been the Commodores’ head coach since 1999. Covington led Tates Creek to the finals of the 11th Region tournament last year, losing to eventual state champion Scott Co. Tates Creek athletic director Joe Ruddell says assistant Eric Williams will take over on an interim basis. Coach Williams has done a great job as the assistant coach - and did most of the bench coaching in Tates Creek's summer games. He'll have a nice team to work with this year.

Those who are "at risk" kids can really be hurt by the lack of structure in their lives during the "dead period". Without sports to keep them focused and active - some kids fill that time by finding trouble. "Idle time is the devil's time." IMO - two weeks is plenty. Families (and coaches) can go on vacation and have a break. The exposure camps go on all summer - during both the dead and live periods. In today's world - if a kid can play, coaches will find him. These camps might determine which specific school a student/athlete ends up at, but the level (High Major/Mid Major/Low Major) is seldom changed. Now if a coach won't let his kids go to the exposure camps during the live period - that's another issue... but it should be dealt with on the district level rather than mandating a longer dead period for the entire state. JMO

The biggest improvement they could make to KY high school football is to move the season back to one or maybe even two weeks earlier than it is now. That way the kids can join up with the basketball team earlier in the season. I feel that it's the football hurting the basketball - contrary to other posts in this thread.

I actually think that Happy pays the staff he hires (his current and former players) about $200 for the week - he then lets the BBA use the camp for young/new officials to "try out". These officials make $0 and may actually pay the BBA a fee to participate. From what I hear Happy's players do a better job than the BBA wanna be guys.

Central, Lee Co., Logan WV, Montgomery Co., North Bullitt, North Oldham, Scott Co., Tates Creek, Augusta, Beth Haven, Betsy Layne, Bourbon Co., Carroll co., Deming, Estill Co., Lincoln Co., Lou. Collegiate, Perry Co. Central, Phelps, Powell Co. There are 2 varsity divisions, a JV division, a Frosh division, and a middle school division. It's a HUGE camp. About 110 total teams. Should be some good games.

I really hope there is more to the story than this. If not I have less respect for Bryan Station High School than ever. If they got rid of Champ to hire Nimbo or Michael Allen - Scott Co. and Henry Clay should be smiling right now. If there isn't a scandal involving Champ - I hope he sues the principal for 1 - waiting so long; and 2 - reverse discrimination. Props to the players for standing up for the guy who brought them state-wide recognition. it won't do any good, but it's a nice gesture. Keep your head up Champ - you did a good thing at Station no matter how they slap you in the face. I have to go puke now.

Marshall was in today to watch Matt at open gym. Tenn. State was there to check out Rodney Haddix.

I was referring to the selection process of who actually makes the team, not who gets to try out. While both processes are political, it will be better for the KABC to govern who is on the team - I think.

I'd say that depends on who the first year coach is...
