Word at the tournament at Murray State earlier this month was that Lexington Catholic was getting a transfer that could help them this year ... a point guard from Lafayette, perhaps?

Anyone know who won that tourney??? There were alot of Ky. teams in it. Just wondering.

Gallatin (TN) won the tournament, beating Paducah Tilghman in the championship game.

Rumor has it Sanford from Lafayette will be transferring to Lexington Catholic. I assume he will sit out a year.

Sanford is a very good player. He has skills and athleticism. IMO a much better player than the point gaurd transfering to Scott County.

Can he play imediatly or did hey play some varsity and have to sit out a year?

He started varsity I am pretty sure for Lafayette last season. It doesnt make sense because he would have to sit a year considering both schools are in the same area. Would a change of address matter in this situation?

I believe he will be a junior this upcoming season.

I believe he would have to move out of the Lafayette district in order to play immediately ASSUMING he moves BEFORE he transfers.

He possibly could be eligible if he meets one of the following criteria.

 

a) Bonafide Change of Address- moves out of LHS school district before transferring.

b) Divorce- Parent living outside LHS school district gets full custody.

c) Guardianship Change of Address

d) Death of Custodial Parent

e) Transfer to Boarding School

f) Student did not participate in athletics for a full year before transferring

g) Reassignment by board of education

h) Transfer from non-member school

 

Even if the student meets one of the provisions above it does not guarantee the KHSAA will deem him eligible.

The KHSAA has been pretty consistent in regards to this. If the divorce occurred PRIOR to the transfer and the other parent is already in place, the kid still has to sit. Heck, someone in WKY in the 70s took it to the KY Supreme Court and the KHSAA's ruling was upheld. I believe we also saw it in the NE KY part of the state a few years ago with a basketball player.

Below are the specifics as relate to divorce and Bylaw 6 (transfers)

 

"DIVORCE- The KHSAA will not recognize a legal seperation as grounds for a waiver of the provisions of this bylaw. The Commissioner may waive the provisions of this bylaw in the event of a dissolution of marraige (final and legal binding divorce) of the parents and a change in residence of the student pursuaint to a court order custody of the child to one of the parents with whom the student shall reside. In the event joint custody is awarded to both parents, for purpose of this bylaw, the student shall be deemed to reside at his or her previous residence if one parent retains the residence. If neither parent retains the former residence, the parents shall designate one of their new residences (mother or father) for the purpose of this bylaw, such designation to be reviewed and approved by the Commissioner."

My understanding is that the key to this is that the student moves as a RESULT of the divorce (ie Dad moves out as a result and kid goes with him). If the parents are already apart in their own homes, the KHSAA will not usually recognize that as a right to play immediately.
