They will definitely be in 1A if/when they ever get back into district. It will be interesting to see what the KHSAA decides to do with them. They could move them north with LCA, Paris etc or south with the district they should have been in this year. I would imagine it could also have to do with #'s at Lynn Camp. I would think you all would be close to the border with 2A, is that accurate?

2009 Football season. I still personally think it was a bad move dropping out of district play in the first place.

The Register had an actual story with interviews of Berea's coach and a player. There was no box score, but the coach was talking about continuing a new philosophy of winning at Berea.

According to Sunday's edition of the Richmond Register, Berea won the game 48-12.

No, Tyler Mays is #10. Isaiah Kavanaugh is #3 and Ricky Rhodes is #5. Great scrimmage. Both teams seemed to get some good work in.

The reason that they have not hired a coach is NOT because they have not had qualified applicants or because no one has expressed real interest in the job. There have been other school systems just as small and just as $$$ strapped that have already hired. Berea was one of the very first jobs posted this off season and they will be the very last to make a hire. What kind of statement does that make to the community and the kids? I guess everyone has to form their own opinions.

I'm not sure it will hurt as bad as one might think. Especially if Administrators will allow the new Coach(es) to have a major say in the design and implementation of the new facilities. It might even be a selling point....

I'm pretty sure the Seattle Seahawks have been doing this for a while too. Obviously not as long as A&M but I'm pretty sure they make a real big deal out of raising a "12th Man" flag at the beginning of games. Copyrighting catch-phrases.... What a great way to make $$$. I wonder if those guys on that Sonic commercial have copyrighted "That's sooo Gravy" yet?

No, They will not be able to rejoin district play until the 2009 Season. This after they informed KHSAA back in January that they would not participate in district play for the upcoming season.

Yes, Todd Harris is the Head Coach. I think that it is commendable that Jackson County has made the committment to a football program and are playing a full district schedule in their first full season of varsity play.

You make an excellent point. I see exactly what you are saying. I think a more common perception of "stepping stone" job would be that one stays there for a short time while trying to work toward something better. No one should ever be faulted for trying to better themselves. I myself have "higher" ambitions. I was just under a different impression concerning what the hiring folks wanted for this position.

Coach Roof and the rest of the Baseball staff are excellent coaches. They make very tough decisions year in and year out on players. Coach Roof is an honest guy, he'll tell a guy the way it is, and that is a hard thing to do many times. I do know for a fact that he will go out of his way to accomodate multi-sport athletes, particularly Football-Baseball combo guys. Baseball is a tough sport to coach. In football a coach basically doesn't have to cut, if the player follows the rules, is a good teammate and works hard, there is usually a place for him on the team. With baseball, even in larger programs with full jv and freshman schedules there are only so many guys you can carry on a team. You can trust me on this, when Roof makes a decision, or talks to a player about the decision that player should make, he has not only the best interest of the Madison Central Baseball program, but the best interest of the guy he's talking to at heart.

Not to be splitting hairs here folks but, one of the reasons why I like this site is because 11 year old information can become relavant again. The 1996 playoffs featured this set up for 2A Districts 5 and 6. FIRST ROUND: #1 Corbin vs. #4 Mercer = Corbin in a blowout. #2 Rock vs. # 3 Boyle Co = Boyle in a mild upset. #3 Madison Southern vs. #2 Anderson County = Southern with good win . #4 Wayne Co. vs. #1 Danville = Danville in a solid win. SECOND ROUND: #3 Boyle Co Defeats #1 Danville 12-0 #3 Madison Southern Defeats #1 Corbin in an Overtime Thriller 28-27. Corbin was in fact a very very good team, but caught an extremely athletic Southern team who were peaking at the right time. Region Finals at Madison Southern: Boyle County beat Southern 29-28 in a Great game. Probably the biggest game ever held at Madison Southern. Boyle would go on to lose 12-7 the next week to Breathitt County who would go on to beat Fort Knox in the State Finals completing their Undeafeted Championship run. At any rate with respect to the Powell County folks who are watching this thread and wanting to know more about the hiring process of their new Head Coach, I personally hope that who ever the administration brings in that they support the program properly. That will be the key whoever gets this job.

He is another guy who is routinely mentioned when jobs in our area come open. I have to admit this one does surprise me a little though.

Bottom line is Coach Stepp is a solid Coach and whether he is at Clay Co. for another couple years or until he retires, he will work hard for his kids and his program. Good Luck to all.

I've been keeping an eye on all of this from a distance, but I now feel I can actually contribute something useful to the conversation. I believe that both Evarts and Cumberland have scheduled games for the 2007season, which would lead me to believe that no consolidation would occur prior to 08 at the earliest. I would assume contracts have been signed for the 07 season, so it COULD cost the schools money to back out of those contracts should either Evarts or Cumberland consolidate with Cawood prior to the HCC opening. It is not out of the question as this same type of thing happened with Harrodsburg combining with Mercer County prior to this school year. All of Harrodsburg's games were cancelled and they honored the Mercer County commitments. This left several schools who had Harrodsburg on the schedule in a bind for games, and some would argue that it lead to the State Championship season for Mercer, with 4A enrollment playing a 2A schedule, but that is a different discussion. I believe that there will be many very Qualified people interested in this job from around the state. I know of some Head Coaches and several Assistant Coaches that have ties to Harlan County either directly or indirectly that would be interested in being a part of something special. I would venture to say that some of those folks have already made contact with the School system. Assuming this deal is all done "on the up and up"; there should be a great applicant pool and a very interesting hiring process.

Agreed. They must have some sort of consistency in the coaching staff. Counting back to the Anthony Barsch days, (who probably had the longest tenure of any BCS Football coach, 7 seasons I believe from '90 to '97) the new coach hired will be the 6th different coach since '97. But further, they need to prove to the kids and the community (parents and boosters) that they do want Football to be successful by doing visable things to promote the program.

Danny Hope puts on an outstanding Lineman camp at EKU and if I remember correctly it is relatively affordable. With your son being the age that he is, it would be an excellent opportunity for him.
