The success of Clay Counties Offense:

Featured Replies

With the massive number that their young Qb has put up over the last couple of years, what is it about that offense that makes it so special. Is it the Jimmies and the Joes or the great X's and O's that AAron Stepp has brought to the area.I am waiting for a maual on the keys to succes in my system by Aaron Stepp. Let me hear your thoughts

Probably a combination. A great system but it takes athletes to run any system and a good coaching staff to put the right kids in place. Coach Black had great success at Williamsburg but struggled with it this year at Whitley. I don't think the kids bought into it. This year the Lebanion kid at quarterback will make the system fly.

One thing that helps Clay County is they play a lot of inferior teams that never see the spread offense. Clay may line up in trips or quads and the opponent may have not seen it all year due to playing mostly running style teams in the southeastern part of KY.

I'm not taking anything away from Aaron Stepp because Clay still has to execute it, but they stop putting up those crazy stats once they play Bell County or Rock.

I'll say it's a mixture of both. Clay's young QB along with some others have put in a lot of extra time and work in the offense along with coach Stepp. Aaron has pulled his hair out making the switcharoo to the "air" game, really, have you seen his head lately.:D As Son Of Bear says, their numbers were not so crazy against the better teams, although I think they did rack up some near crazy numbers at Ashland in the playoffs in 05 when the QB was a freshman. Their numbers have still been ok when playing the better teams in the district, just not crazy. IMO Stepp & his staff deserves much of the credit for reviving the program at Clay, he's got one more hurdle to cross though...Get a senior class bigger than 6 or 7. Here in the mountains these days it's tough to keep em playing for some reason. I've noticed the decline in numbers on a lot of rosters. Clay's numbers are growing somewhat, but the older guys ain't sticking. I think Stepp and the Tigers have a chance to make a run at the district title on 07 and that will help "keep em playing" more than anything.

He did put up some big #'s against Ashland in the playoffs a few years ago, I was really impressed with the QB. Especially how young he was and how he had a great concept of the offense. But despite those big #'s he also threw 4 interceptions with 2 returned for touchdowns.

I saw Clay play twice last year. I came away very impressed with the offense. They have a ways to go on the defensive side of the ball. Howevr, from what I am hearing clay better enjoy the offensive success while they can. Clay will be looking for a coach before to long. It is rumored that there are a few team who have approached the clay coach about taking over there programs. I Look for clay's coach to move on to other things . I think that the coach at clay will be in another part of the state before to long. What I have heard is that he will be in a neighboring reggion before to long. It is just a matter of time. i do think that clay will have a good cahnce at winning that new disrtict.

Lone Ranger, check your pm.

Crazy numbers, maybe, but all those numbers have equaled 0 playoff wins in the past six years. Gotta be able to produce when it counts.

First Aaron Stepp is not going anywhere. He is a great coach and will be very good next year in the new district format. he has talent yes but he knows how to coach his kids and get them to do what he wants. He has one of the best QB's in KY and will produce huge numbers in the next 2 years.. As far as weak opponents who don't see the spread is that Aaon's fault or the other teams coach for not preparing his team for the spread offense?

I would like to know if some of them plays come from NCAA 200& (HAHA)

This is a great coach who gets the most out of his players and yes Rock and Bell is a tough district to be in but he has been competitive through out his tenure at Clay. I don't see Stepp leaving anytime soon.

Bottom line is Coach Stepp is a solid Coach and whether he is at Clay Co. for another couple years or until he retires, he will work hard for his kids and his program. Good Luck to all.
