  1. Well, first of I have heard that OHS has a few key players not playing this year. I haven't confirmed for sure but if so it will hurt OHS's depth. Now that being said, I don't think there is a team on thier schedule that the Red Devils can't beat, but OHS will need to improve drastically on offense if they want to contend for the inagural 5A title. The QB play was too inconsistant and I think OHS need to open up the playcalling a little more. It has to be more than run left and run right. But I do look for Yorel Shemwell to fill in for graduated Nick Hall and not miss a beat. OHS does return all the o-line, but needs to replace some on the d-line. OHS has some good possesion recievers, but they need to see the ball a little more to make teams honest. Linebacker will be a strong point with Neil Johnston and Blake Roberts holding that down. OHS should also have a strong secondary with Josh Hayden and Wayne Duncan roaming around back there. But no doubt OHS disrict is tough. Christian County, and Hopkinsville are no slouches, and then you got Bowling Green, and Warren Central in the other district. Then you got John Hardin also in the west and that alone makes me want to talk NO smack! I still think OHS has a good of a chance as any to make it to Papa Johns but I'm gonna see how the Red Devils look on the field before I get too confident. :fire:
  2. I totally agree that 5A in Kentucky will be the most competitave class. There are several teams that right now, could really make an argument for being in the top 10. The Northern Kentucky teams will be strong like usual. And Western Kentucky looks to be heated as well. Owensboro has a very good crop of seniors who really want to bring a football title back home to OHS. Neil Johnston and Blake Roberts are two linebackers who could start on anyones' team. Wayne Duncan and Josh Hayden look to hold down the secondary, so look for points to be hard to come by on the Red Devils "D" this season. On offense OHS has speed to burn. Look for Junior Yorell Shemwell to fill in at RB and not miss a beat for graduated Nick Hall. Shemwell might not be a tough (yet) he is more elusive and has better speed. But in order for OHS to get over the hump and win state, they are going to have to get better production out of the QB. The o-line looks to be solid for OHS, but there are questions on the defensive line for the Red Devils. Also look for the emergence of sophomore Marcus Winstead. He is a true speedster(and cousin of NY Jets star Justin Miller) and if the gets in the clear, teams won't catch him. Thats who I know most know about. I've heard BG, Christian County, Warren Central, Hopkinsville, are good out of the west. And I assume Highlands, Dixie, and Cov Cath will be good out of the north. Also John Hardin will field a very good team and they were sophomore heavy last year. Looks to be a war for the 5A title this year! :fire:
  3. Owensboro High School Mark Higgs RB- Miami Dolphins Vince Buck CB- New Orleans Saints Ken Willis K- Dallas Cowboys Justin Miller CB-New York Jets --Currently in the NFL--Voted to the 2007 AFC Pro Bowl team, and was 2nd team all NFL :fire:
  4. Owensboro Red Devils 1) Cliff Hagan-Played for Adolph Rupp and the University of Kentucky. Was arguably one of the best ever at UK. Won championships at OHS, UK, and the NBA. 2)Kenny "Doc" Higgs-Scored 1,833 points as a Red Devil. Went on to star at LSU and currently ranks 6th on the Tigers all-time scoring list. He also ranks 1st in several assist record catagoies for LSU. He went on to play for the Cleveland Cavs, and actually scored more points at LSU then he did at OHS. 3)Randy Embry-Was the 1961 Kentucky Mr. Basketball. Finished his career at OHS with 1,610 points. Went on to play for Adolph Rupp at UK and was chosen team captain his senior year. He also coached the Red Devils to the 80' state title and won over 550 games as a coach. 4)Bobby Watson-Was a standout on the basketball court for OHS as well as on the sidelines where he amassed over 500 victories as coach of the Red Devils winning the 72' state title. He also played for coach Adolph Rupp at UK where he was selected 1st team all SEC two years in a row and in 52' selected to the all SEC tourney team. FWIW he will almost always be last on UK's 1000 point club with 1001 points as a Wildcat. 5)Jerry Thruston-Was selected as Mr. Basketball in 1972 when he lead OHS to the 72' state title. He went on to play college ball at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia and scored over 1000 points for the Bears. He also had a short stint with the Chicago Bulls in the NBA. Honorable Mention Brandon Davenport-1997 Kentucky Mr. Basketball. Attended Morehead State, but transferred to Lindsey Wilson. Scored 1,702 points for OHS, and had 15 assist in one game. James Douglas-Led OHS to the 92' Final Four, and finished with 1,439 points as a Red Devil. Attended the the University of New Orleans and led the Privateers to the 96' NCAA tourney on a last second jumper in the finals of the Sun Belt Conference tourney. Played professionally in Europe Lamar Owen-Scored over 1,250 points as a Red Devil. After 2 years at Wabash Valley JUCO went on to Southern Illinois where he was voted the Missouri Valley Conference 6th man of the year. The Salukies went to the NCAA tourney both years and Lamar now plays professionally in Europe. Rod Drake-After leading OHS to the 80' state title and scoring over 1000 points he took his talents to Kentucky Wesleyan College and starred for the Panthers. He played professionally in Holland. Guys I could put more on this Honorable Mention list but its gettin' late and I'll leave it alone. Hope ya'll enjoy! :fire:
  5. Well, seeing how Ryle completely dismantled Hendo, then I dont have much of an argument. But strongly feel like had Owensboro not played the most dismal game of their season against Hendo in the 2nd round then Ryle would have found the Red Devils to be much of a stiffer challenge. I really feel like Warren Central would have fared much better as well. But results speak for themselves, Ryle was that good that night. :fire:
  6. Wow, I am very much shocked at the spread in this one. Ryle must be for real. I know Hendo is kinda small up front. Did Ryle pretty much dominate the line of scrimmage? And from this outcome, Id have to say Ryle very much has a shot at Trinity next week. --Well Dragonfire, I dont know if either one of us would have done much better against Ryle or not. Good season Cols, and go get one against Trinity Ryle! :fire:
  7. The bottom line in this game is that Catholic can not stop the run against a good team. I personally hope the Aces go up there and represent the city of Owensboro well, but know that in Catholic's losses this year they have been killed on the ground. On paper, I think this is a huge mismatch. However, games are not won on paper and you dont have a stat sheet for heart. This time of the year coach Edge always has the Aces on top of their game, but Friday I dont think it will matter how well they play. Mercer is loaded, and they have too much speed and rushing power for OCath. Mercer County 49 Owensboro Catholic 21 :fire:
  8. Congrats Hendo. Represent the district all the way to state! :fire:
  9. Congrats to the Colonels. They were indeed the better team on this night. OHS, just too many penalites and turnovers and Hendo is too good to do that against. Good luck against Warren Central. FWIW, OHS was with out star linebacker Neil Johnston, and lineman Terry Swanagan this game both with injuires. :fire:
  10. First off, Im not a Henderson fan. I do agree with what is being said. A rule is a rule, and in this case a rule was broken. But as we know, some schools are above KHSAA rules. I just dont like how some people on here are making Hendo out to look like they did something that was horrible. I could give 20 examples RIGHT NOW of things done by other programs that the KHSAA turns their heads or slaps a wrist for. Like I said, im not a Hendo fan, or an insider on thier program, but from what I got this boy had issues and football was his outlet. Never played a snap. And also, what exactly does 2 years probation mean? :fire:
  11. I dont know all the facts, but from what I've read personally, this is a stupid move by the KHSAA. Especially if the kid never played one snap. :fire:
  12. If the old saying that offense fills seats, and defense wins championships then OHS should be on their way to a district and hopefully a region championship. OHS came out first scoring on a 3 yard run by Nick Hall, but missed the extra point making it 6-0 Devils. That lead held up through intermission. After halftime the light came on for Henderson County. After Henderson's D backed OHS up the Colonels took over in great field position. Hendo QB Jerimiah Cousey hooked up with Quinn West for a 37 yard pass down to the 3. Then Antoinne Lightfoot ran it in to make it 7-6 Colonels. Then Hendos D stiffened again and Henderson got good field position and Jesse Gilliam made a 33 yard field goal to put Hendo up 10-6. After a penalty on the kickoff OHS was backed inside the 10 and Hendo brought the house sacking Austin Moss in the end zone to make it 12-6. Going into the fourth quarter Hendo had to punt. Then OHS came to life. OHS blocked Hendo's punt and Tyler Acton scooped it up and ran it back 50 yards for the TD to put OHS up 13-12. OHS put together a good drive after stopping Hendo again, and if not for a holding penalty inside the 10 would have scored anothe TD. OHS settled for a Joseph Mckinley FG from 32 yards out to make it 16-12 OHS. That was hugh because it forced Hendo to score a TD to beat the Red Devils. Basically it forced Hendo to pass. OHS D stiffened again and Hendo shanked the punt. Neil Johnston scooped it up and raced 35 yards for the TD making it 23-12. This may be the point where OHS defensive end Tim Therber took over. It could have been the possesion before but I can't remember. Jeremiah Cousey went back to pass and never saw Therber coming and it was lights out. Kind of like one of those "jacked up" plays on espn. It might have been the next play or the play after then he sacked him again. Hendo still had to pass and Neil Johnston picked it off, and tight roped the sideline and gallaped 65 yards for the interception return. Then to top it off after the kickoff, Tim Therber pushed the Hendo tackle all the way in the backfield, threw him off and sacked Cousey again to end the game. It was a great win for OHS. I dont think we brought our 'A' game through 3 quarters, but you gotta give Henderson their props. They have a stingy D, and 2 solid RB's in the backfield. I think Lightfoot needs more touches personally. Cousey's not a great passer, but his 37 yard strike to West proved he can pass when needed. Lost in all this was OHS RB Nick Hall. The gritty OHS rb amassed 140 yards on 29 carries. The ran so hard tonight. I look for both these teams to meet up again in 3 weeks at Rash Stadium to see who gets to take on Warren Central for the Region championship. :fire:
  13. Daviess County 35, Grayson County 21-If the Panthers win this one, how does a 3-way tiebreaker between DC, Ohio County, and Grayson County work out? Owensboro 28, Henderson County 14-The showdown is finally here, and while the Colonlels have a potent 1-2 punch in Lightfoot and Gilliam, OHS doesnt give much up on the ground. That forces Hendo to pass and OHS wins a key 4A Region 1, District 1 matchup. Owensboro Catholic 49, Glasgow 21-The Scotties have fallen off the map. Ocath rolls. Apollo 35, Ohio County 14-It will be interesting to see if the Richie Stanley experiment continues at QB for Apollo. The Eagles will look to refocus before next weeks showdown with OHS. :fire:
  14. Henderson County 21, Apollo 7-Apollo doesnt seem to have much offense, and the Colonels have to much speed to be kept out of the endzone. This game should be the start of an interesting next three weeks in 4-A Region 1 District 1. Daviess County 28, Logan County 21-This one is kinda a guess, but I was very impressed with DC quarterback Cole Lanham last week against OHS. He has a good arm and quick feet, and looks to be a good up and coming QB. Owensboro 56, Grayson County 7- OHS looked very rusty against Daviess County last week, so after a solid week of practice I look for the Red Devils to be sharp in thier tuneup for Henderson County. Owensboro Catholic 49, Edmonson County 21-Aces still cant stop the run, but Edmonson cant stop the pass. :fire:
  15. Owensboro High School Mark Higgs, RB-Miami Dolphins Vince Buck, DB- New Orleans Saints Ken Willis, K-Dallas Cowboys Justin Miller, DB-New York Jets(currently in the NFL) :fire:
  16. Evansville North 21, Apollo 14-The North Huskies are a "Jeckel and Hyde" team. They get clobbered by Mater Dei, but turn right around and beat Evansville Reitz. Go figure. It looks to me that North's weakness is defending the pass which North shouldn't have to worry too much about against Apollo. This is also another chance for the Eagles to prove the critics wrong about their umblemished record. Owensboro 42, Daviess County 7-The Red Devils have had a long two week layoff after the Male game was cancelled and a bye week. OHS is itching to get back on the field, but I expect some rust. Hopefully OHS will get it done and get the starters out relativly early. Owensboro Catholic 35, Monroe County 21-I expect that Monroe will run the ball at the Aces behind Billy Joe Murphy who commited to UK, but someone in Western Ky 2A is going to have to show they can stop Catholic's passing game before I pick the Aces to lose. Henderson County 56, Ohio County 14-Look for the Colonels to roll here.
  17. Daviess County 21, Ohio County 14-I see the Panthers pulling this one off to set up their game of the year, Grayson County at home on senior night for a spot in the playoffs. I hope coach Kimbrall can get the Panthers in the playoffs. Henderson County 56, Grayson County 14- Colonels roll. :fire:
  18. Big Schools 1-Bowling Green 2-Christian County 3-Owensboro 4-Warren Central 5-Henderson County 6-Marshall County 7-Graves County 8-Apollo 9-Hopkinsville 10-Warren East Small Schools 1-Mayfield 2-Ft. Campbell 3-Owensboro Catholic 4-Russellville 5-Caldwell County 6-Trigg County 7-Monroe County 8-Lone Oak 9-Metcalfe County 10-Fulton County :fire:
  19. Due to inclimate weather, the game has been cancelled and will not be made up. :fire:
  20. Hey Alabama Larry, I think strike mentioned Moonlight earlier. I'll give you a little tip. If you want good bar-b-que and arent into the buffet thing, then try Old Hickory Bar-B-Que. Its just up the road from OHS. You'll go south a couple of blocks till you pass Starbucks and you'll see Independence Bank on your left. The bank looks just like Independence hall in Philly so you cant miss it. You take a right there on Washington Ave and Old Hickory is on the left. I personally like it better that Moonlite and you wont want to pass out after eating there. Hope you enjoy your visit! Go Devils! :fire:
  21. Apollo 35, Daviess County 14- The Eagles are rolling right now and the Panthers are reeling. Owensboro Catholic 56, Todd County Central 14-Todd scores on Catholics frosh. Aces continue district roll. Louisville Male 28, Owensboro 14- See thread. :fire:
  22. I think Male is definatly the favorite here. This game is a chance for OHS to show wheater or not they are ready to take the next step in competing for a state title. Male is loaded in the skill positions like always, but coach Redman said in an interview in the Messenger-Inquirer that he felt like his line was strong as well. OHS coach Joe Prince was talking about Male's line, and was very impressed as well. As far as the game goes, I think OHS will have to survive the "early knockout blow". OHS cant get down 2 or 3 touchdowns early or its over. And the Red Devils offense is going to have to move the ball to get good field position or Male will score sooner or later. I think Male still plays that junk defense where they put 8 or 9 in the box, so OHS will have to pass to win. Screens, slants, and quick hitters might work against an agressive Bulldog defense. Then theres the x factor. Doug Beaumont. Redman said he had an ankle injury in their last game so how he recovered from that will be seen. And if he's not 100 percent then Im sure the stable isnt bare for Male. Nick Hall is OHS's playmaker, and while he's not Beaumont he'll have to carry the load for OHS. I hope to see a big crowd for the game, and I cant wait for the showdown! I just think Male might have a little too much in the end. Male 28 OHS 14 :fire:
  23. Well, I'll start with the title of this thread. Apollo sitting at 4-0 isn't a surprise because you have to look at thier early season schedule. However the Eagles are a good football team. Senior LB Ben Duvall has verbally commited to Purdue, and cornerback Micheal Mattingly has 6 interceptions this season. Devin Matlock has been a potent rusher for AHS as has the Lusk guy. I dont think Apollo has seen the kind of overall team speed that JH posses, and thats where I see Apollo struggling this Friday. :fire:
  24. John Hardin 21, Apollo 7-From what I seen against OHS, JH has a ton of team speed. The Bulldogs defense was all over the field last Friday and I see Apollo having a tough time scoring. Much has been said about the Apollo 'D', but I dont think they've seen the speed that JH has. Warren Central 49, Daviess County 21-Central breaks out to a big lead, and puts it in cruise control after intermission. Owensboro Catholic 28, Butler County 24-I see this one being tight since the Butler County Bears play tough at home. I think OCath's evolving passing game, and an ever improving defense will be the difference in the end. OHS 56, Ohio County 7-Hopefully the Red Devils will go to Hartford, look sharp, and get ready for Male next week. I possibly see the 45 point rule going into effect in this one. :fire:
  25. I want to say what a great night it was for OHS's 1000th game! The crowd was great, and it was awesome to see some old timers, and some of my teamates from the mid to late 90's! It was also very special to be out on the field at halftime for the picture that they took. As for the game, it was very much a defensive battle. John Hardin very much impressed me with their overall team speed. And, if I read the program right, JH has a sophomore dominated team. Look out for the Bulldogs in the future! OHS could never seem to stretch the field against JH. OHS did however have sucess passing the ball because JH had 8 in the box most of the night. OHS blocked that punt early in the first quarter and I thought that was a sign of a long night for JH but it was not to be. JH's defense stiffened and held OHS at the 1. OHS elected to kick and missed it. I think you gotta go for it in that situation because you miss and the ball goes out to the 20. Thats a free 19 yards! OHS did get on the board when Austin Moss hooked up with William Duncan for a td pass and the two point conversion was good by Moss for a 8-0 lead. JH put together a very impressive drive late in the first half. The Bulldogs had OHS's defense on their heels with the misdirection plays and got into the endzone. OHS stuffed the two point conversion to make it 8-6 at the half. The game still stayed a defensive battle until OHS senior RB Nick Hall fielded a punt and got a couple block on his way to an 80 yard td return for the backbreaker. I think OHS was very conservitive in their playcalling due to it being the 1000th game and kinda playing not to lose. But the Red Devils did play hard and with tons of heart. I hope OHS goes to Ohio County and executes sharply while getting ready for the showdown with #1 Louisville Male in two weeks! It will also be interesting to see how JH stacks up against OHS's crosstown rival Apollo this Friday. The Eagles have started the season at 4-0. :fire:
