Allow me to add his respect for all of his opponents and collegues as well. Coach Listerman is absolutely one of the classiest men in the coaching ranks today. I'll never forget the respect shown toward us at the Regional basketball tournament by Coach Listerman when virtually all others questioned our being there. I think we all, as sportsmen, are losing out with Mike's resignation.

My first question is why are only young coaches considered to be "motivational" coaches by so many on here? Secondly, there is so much more to running a high school program that isn't about the X's and O's that it really takes time and experience to know and learn. There are clear exceptions, Eddie Eviston comes to mind immediately (he did a fantastic job), but those are fewer than one might think. A good young coach that surrounds himself with solid, experienced staff has a much better chance of success in my opinion, but most young coaches surround themselves with their peers who are generally of the same age and experience. BUT, if a school hires a young coach, then they must be willing to live with young coach mistakes. I think it is a tough decision for programs sometimes. Also, hiring coaches at the high school level is in no way even remotely similar to hiring college coaches. Teaching positions, staff availability, time of day that high school practices and events take place is a huge consideration for most, background checks, KHSAA training and certification, and so on and so on. We need more young coaches to enter the profession for sure, but I truly understand the hesitancy of schools to hire them in many situations. Sort of a Catch-22 I guess.

Name one year when the "best 8 teams" EVER made it to the Regional.

If those athletes are not enrolled in THAT school yet (or in some cases at least in that district), the coach just might want to check his and his school's insurance policies before any "official" practices begin.

I do stand corrected. I skipped a year. It is actually three times in the last 15. God, it must have been very traumatic for them.

If you'll check your records, you will, I believe, see that only once in the past 14 years have Highlands and NewCath drawn into the same side of the bracket for basketball. So I guess all will be well in the world now that it is once again so.

Not personal in the least, I hardly know the kid. And the name is Spata. The response was to your post that singled out the young man, not anything I said. Seems like you're the one taking this personally. MY point is that just because a kid plays at a smaller or less talented program (your words) doesn't mean he is a less talented player as you suggested. Personal? Uh, no, not hardly. You couldn't be farther off the mark on that statement. However, we agree that the unfortunate truth is that our sport receives little recognition in general as compared to some other sports. Maybe it's our own fault, maybe it's the rise in "other" activities for kids. There are ALOT of quality players in our area that go unnoticed at times. And by the way, a team's record is hardly a basis for comparison as far as talent or success. Not every team's schedule is equal in terms of quality of opponents. Coach Roberts has a quality program and plays a solid schedule.

Where in the world do you get the notion that Scott's program is (a) a small school, or (b) not very good? Scott has a very strong program and has had for years. It is also a 5A or 4A class school in football if I'm not mistaken. Young Mr. Spata would be a top freshman no matter what school he was attending I assure you. For whatever reason, many folks assume that just because a player does indeed attend a smaller school that they certainly cannot be as good as a player from a larger school, simply because of the size of the school. That simply is not the case. Talented players are talented players and a young man like Reed Spata has established himself as a strong player. If you or your son are not getting the recognition you think you deserve, then I suggest you seek ooprtunties that will enhance that.

And isn't one of the OTHER goals of sport to educate and inform? At least let's pretend it still matters. What an opportunity to meet and interact with people from another country half a world away!! What a great educational experience for STUDENT-athletes.

What a ridiculous statement. If you have spent any amount of time around the Holmes program (which you obviously have not) you would readily see the transformation that has occured there. As a Holmes fan, I personally hope this rumor is not true, but if it is, I wish continued success to a fine young coach. Coaching is about so much more than wins and losses and Coach Lickert epitomizes that every day.

Simple explanation. Reduce the wear and tear on the rims. During the game, there are limitations onthe amount of time you can hang on the rim. No such limtations in warm-ups and as someone said earlier, warm-ups have turned into "showtime" rather than preparation time. And if you've ever had to pay to replace one of these breakaway rims, you'd totally understand.
