Holmes next coach will be......

Featured Replies

I understand where you're coming from Q, but you have to realize that the reason Holmes has been so successful the past 5 or 6 years is because Henley got his teams away from that style. Sure the 07/08 team with Henderson and Co. pressed, but you have to have depth for that.

Holmes will continue to keep their program in the same direction as it was under Henley. This is why I feel someone "within the system/program" or Sullivan would be the best fit.

Remember Holmes' JV teams also ran a similar offense and were just as successful, so it has nothing to do with personnel.

That and good teams beat presses. So when you get to a regional final and you're playing Boone and they want the score in the 30's that's where it will be. Your kids have to know how to play that style. They learn to play that style by playing it. Every kid knows how to play fast. If anyone tries to run w/ Holmes I would guess their coaches would allow that.

What does them being a "DII program" have to do with anything? WIth all due respect Mr. Mustang, you couldn't be more wrong in your thinking on this one.

I realize you're upset about the "new competition" being a team that can legitimately win DII and beat your team every year, but no need to make accusations that they only dropped down because of the supposed drop off in talent.

Holmes actually made the drop because of their other sports such as baseball, soccer, and girls basketball.

The uninformed might think that Holmes is now going to be in a "rebuilding stage" because of the loss of the Johnson Brothers and Pittman, but don't be fooled. They have plenty coming through the next 5 or 6 years to not only be a region contender every year, but also a top 15-20 team in the state.

Everyone thought they were going to drop off after the c/o 2007 graduated and all they did was make it to back to back state championships the following two years. There's a reason Holmes is considered one of the top programs in the state...they simply reload every year.

I'm not upset about anything Mr Walter, why take the personal jab?

When did stating a fact become "making an accusation?"

We certainly have no strangle-hold on the NKAC Division II race, and haven't won it since 2007.

Actually we used to schedule Holmes on an annual basis, winning more than our share. Our (Brossart) overall record with Holmes stands at 3-3.

My point of even making the comment is that everyone is envisioning the future Holmes teams to be comparable to those of the recent past. I think that the next couple of Holmes teams might fit in quite well with the Brossarts, Holy Crosses, St. Henrys, NewCaths, and Highlands that comprise that division.

Dave Henely accomplished all that he could at Holmes, whoever takes over the reigns at Holmes will not have the same opportunities right off the bat that Henely has enjoyed in recent years.

I'm certainly not infallible, and you are probably much more informed on the Holmes situation/subject than I. Simply offering my observation and surmizing. No offense intended.

Rule #8

Would be cool if Dickey Beal took over as the coach!!!

Dicky already has coached for a little bit down where Henley is headed, and I don't think it ended too well as he is back in the area.

If they move down to DII then they should hire Rick Shumate he Has only lost 1 conference game in 3 yrs in the small school group :D. If they wanna win District again then they better hire someone like the Head coach at Cooper.

I would be highly suprised if Sullivan doesn't get it. From what I have heard from people close to the program, Sullivan has been their choice to replace Henley for a long time.

I wasn't meaning it as a personal jab, so my apologies if you took it that way. It just seems like you have been against this move since it was announced and you seem to think it was strictly because of the supposed drop in talent now that the "Big 3" are gone.

My point was, why would a program drop ALL of it's sports just because their basketball program wasn't going to be a state title contender? It doesn't make sense. Holmes has always played all of the D1 schools in nky and actually fared very well against them (understatement). It's the DII schools like Newcath/St. Henry who have given them fits, so if the move was based strictly on "drop in talent", why would they move down to DII?

Look at the size of Holmes compared to Boone, Cooper, Ryle, Simon Kenton, Campbell Co, and Conner. It's not even close. That's why they're making the drop to DII. It benefits ALL of their programs, especially the Girls basketball and soccer teams.

Holmes is going to be a top 5 team in nky for years to come. They have no reason to try to dodge any teams in this area. As far as them being comparable to teams like St. Henry/Newcath/Holy Cross/Highlands/Brossart, I disagree big time. From a talent standpoint, very rarely will you see any of those teams with as much talent as Holmes and that will continue to be the case over the next 5 or 6 years. Sure they won't be the dominant force they've been, but outside of Covcath in 04 and Holmes in 08, what nky team has dominated this area?

Strong candidate from outside of NKY. 2+ hours away from NKY.

Care to elaborate?

Have heard for a while that Steve Wright from South Laurel has wanted to get back to Northern Kentucky. Holmes would obviously be a high enough profile job for a coach with a state championship ring.

That would be southern Kentucky...I was thinking more along the lines of Tim Riley of Warren Central.

I believe he is a former Holmes assistant (under Flynn) and runs a similar offense at WC that Holmes has ran the past few years.

I think either him or Steve Wright would be good picks.

These are the quality of coaches I would expect to see interested in the Holmes job. Nothing against the assistants or some other names mentioned, but Holmes will surely get interest from coaches with resumes like these two have. I will be surprised if the next coach isn't one with a strong winning record as a head coach.

Steve Wright had the GRC job several years ago, our principal even announced it. SL came up with more money, we were told, and he stayed at SL. Don't see him leaving SL.

Yes Steve likes the ca$h.

Again, my point is that the Holmes job may not be as high profile as folks on here are making it out to be.

I will not be surprised if Coach Sullivan stays at Cooper.

Brossart went undefeated in NKY in both '05 and '07...
