Mr. Football was not awarded until 1986. Both of the brothers had finished playing at EKU by then.

In 30+ years of watching Highlands football, Chris Gallichio (not sure of that spelling either) might have been my all time favorite to watch. (I'm a big fan of the option done well.) I think he's a cop somewhere in Northern Kentucky these days. That was truly an entertaining team.

How many returns did Gallichio and Hoffman have that year? It had to be a ton..

That is the problem, Collinsworth didn't win it. I also thought he should've had it easily. His credentials and play warranted that award.

 

Don't forget he was also an Army All American.

Artose Pinner - although later deemed ineligible - was pretty amazing to watch run the ball. He WAS the offense at Hoptown in '97.

Exactly, and I am sure that is the only thing that hurt him. We debated this at the end of last season and I think most agreed that was what stopped him from winning it. Nothing else.

Dale Mueller, NCOY, was the reason AC didn't win it. If Dale would have used AC like he did in the State game all season, his numbers would have made it a "no brainer". Same could be said for a lot of past HHS stalwarts that played only 1/2 a game for most the season.

A lot of Highlands players have been mentioned... I know that Lorenzen is the only Bluebird to win it. Did Derek Smith finish runner-up in the voting that year? Have any other Highlands players ever finished second?

Well, I guess it depends on how one views the criteria for the award. If it's for the best senior football player in the state that year, then a case could be made that the number of games played is irrelevant... if one player is the best, then he's the best, period, regardless of if he plays seven games or 10 games. If the award is to go to the player who performed the best throughout the season, then the number of games played is going to matter.

 

Does anyone know what the actual criteria are for this award?

 

In regards to Austin Collinsworth, I suppose History is correct... it must not even have been close, since I believe AC was not even a finalist.

Gallichio and Hoffman were unreal, and I agree that when the option is ran correctly it is something to behold. That is unless you are playing against it.

I still think it's the Kiss of Death when you don't commit early to a Kentucky University!!! IMO....

I agree , just look at all the other awards , I can't even begin to list them all. Oh, by the way , he sat out a couple of games with a broken thumb , and still walked away with tons of hardware. Austin didn't win the Mr. Football award , but his trophy case is pretty full. Then we can bring up the scholly offers , did any player have more offers ?

I always thought Mikey Bright of Mayfield was as good as any player i have seen
