There were some kicks today in the 2A state championship between Mayfield and Beechwood that appeared to have missed by a margin close enough for the kick to have been good in high school field goal posts, but not the narrower college field goal posts. There was a PAT in the 4A state championship game this evening between Boyle County and Corbin that hit the upright and did not go through.

What other games come to memory where the college field goal posts being used for our state championship games made a difference in the final score...or in the final outcome?

In the 2019 2A finals between Somerset and Mayfield, the Cardinals had a kick that hit the upright and was no good and a miss wide.  One was a field goal and one was an extra-point.   I'm not sure which was which.  Somerset hit all 4 of their  extra-points in their 34-31 win.  

It wouldn’t be that hard for a good welder to make adjustable goal posts. You could have a hollow crossbar with slightly smaller crossbars on each end, attached to each upright that could fit inside the main crossbar. They could be slid in to narrow the width or slid out to widen it and could be held in place with bolts. 

I feel like over 95% of high school title games are played at college or NFL stadiums across the country, with narrower goal post. It sucks for a team the hits the uprights or just barely misses, but it is fair for both teams.

Totally agree.  Kickers should be coached accordingly and hopefully make adjustments during practice. I am sure the overall thrill for high school teams to play in a college stadium far outweighs any goal post issues.

Standardize the High School posts to 18'6".

I believe now only one state plays HS football with college hashes and goal posts. In some states when they play on college or pro fields they switch out the goal posts. Switching things like goal posts and/or hashes I don’t think is very feasible for HS programs. That is forcing schools to shell out a pretty good amount of money. I’m not sure how Massachusetts handled it when they made the switch from modified NCAA rules to Fed rules. I’m not even sure if they used NCAA goalposts. 

 

The goalposts at a college should be able to be taken down and replaced/switched out. The hashes can also make a difference in general. 

It would be nice to have a centralized 15k-20K high school stadium for playoffs and etc.. Similar to Massillon in Ohio.

I think it's same for both teams and kickers are part of team so kicker that makes the kicks on college uprights is part of what makes the better team if that's why they win. I don't see HS goal posts ever being a option so it is what it is.

I feel bad for any kicker who misses a game wining tying kick in the finals but all teams play with the same disadvantage. In the 2001 1A final NewCath missed a game tying extra point bc of narrower uprights, but Danville had to also make both of theirs. It is what it is.

This seems like the answer to me for those that feel it’s a big enough problem. As schools update their fields and such install the narrower posts.

The only way to really coach it and practice it would be to actually practice in the narrower posts. And outside of the visual difference of looking at narrower posts, really nothing else changes. The snap, hold, approach, swing are going to be the same regardless of the width of the posts. Maybe you have to make some adjustments when aligned on the hash, but kicking the ball is kicking the ball.

As far as the “thrill” of playing in a college stadium, that thrill is bigger for parents and fans than for players. I know most would disagree with me on this, but outside of maybe the walk out onto the field the first time, it’s really not much different for the players. That thrill is long gone by kickoff. Players would get just as much thrill playing a championship game in the parking lot at Kroger field as they would playing in the stadium.

So every HS in America has to buy new goal posts when about 2 percent will play in a game on a college or NFL field??
