Will there be high school football this fall?

Kentucky is going in the wrong direction for any of this to happen.

Even with a vaccine people will still get the corona. Eventually we have to decide to stop living in fear and move on.

Yes I do as well even with the large number yesterday this weeks total number was 330 less than last weeks total. I just am starting to have a bad feeling especially after seeing a story that the Big 10 may call off football for this fall as early as tomorrow. Plus I have spent several hours getting my OVC middle school girls basketball schedules done for my 16 schools and sent out this evening. As of now all of the middle schools in 16th region plus Lawrence Co. and Mason Co. plan of playing girls basketball this fall.

Number 1, Kentucky is one of the safest states in the US as it relates to the virus. That is a big advantage in comparing college games traveling across multiple states. If it is not safe to play football in Kentucky, then no state in the US should be playing.

Number 2, the numbers are dropping. If the numbers keep dropping, I see no reason why football and other sports can't be played.

Number 3, as far as a controlled environment for high school vs college, I trust the environment for high school kids living at home much more than college kids on campus.

I don't.

High school kids at home aren't in jeopardy of losing scholarships if they go party.

I don't either. In dorms you can control who's entering the living space, the cleaning and sanitation, food prep and even know when and how often they are leaving the building. You don't control any of that with high school kids living at home. Neither situation is totally controllable. But as a coach, I'd be much more comfortable knowing what my college players were doing in their spare time than high school players.

It isn't all about partying. Are the players attending in person classes with students from multiple states? Will they go out to eat without a mask? Will they go to the store without a mask? College players have much more freedom and exposure risk.

Normal college students may have more freedom than high school kids, but not D1 athlete college students.

I'm talking Power 5 programs here... They can absolutely isolate and distance as much as they need to, much more so than will be done at any high school in the country. It's simple, don't go anywhere you're not supposed to or we'll pull your scholarship.

What is the equal to that in a high school setting?

Just saw that recommended in person learning of schools should be delayed until Sept. 28. Not good for sports I'm afraid but I guess if schools were going all online learning to start the year they can still start as planned.

Forget football this fall. It's not going to happen KHSAA. With in person classes being pushed later into the year (September 28th), either start planning for  a spring season or cancel the season all together. This decision needs to be made sooner rather than later in order to give coaches and the kids some predictability. If the Governors concern is for the safety of the kids, there is no way football kicks off as planned on September 11th.

At this point, I don't see how the KHSAA can take the chance after this move and sign off on any fall sports. How do you have fall sports when the kids can't go into the schools due to safety concerns? Best case scenario is DRAMATICALLY shortened seasons if the numbers improve over the next six weeks, which I would venture to say won't happen.

Kids are going to play sports this fall, whether or not they do it through the KHSAA. For anybody "in power" to think otherwise is asinine.

Sports like basketball, baseball, soccer, probably yes.  Football is a little more problematic.  One issue for football outside of school, is that you have to have some place to play.  Most football facilities are tied to a school who controls access to said facilities. And there are very few quality, private fields that I'm aware of.  Where would a startup high school football league have games?  Another football issue is getting coaches, scheduling, and securing equipment.  It's a big undertaking to outfit a football team, and I don't see how it can be done in a couple of weeks in order to have a meaningful season in the fall. I guess 7 on 7 is an option, but it's not really the same experience. This is obviously less a problem for the other sports that already have plenty of non school based facilities to choose from, and players are already using mostly their own gear.

It appears in-person school instruction has been pushed back until 9-28 so at this point it is not looking good...
