Scott Grizzle to be the next head coach at Hazard

According to The Daily Independent, he'll finish out the school year as a teacher at Greenup County before transitioning to his new position.

How does Hazard feel about this hire? A .500 coach? I don't know what the applicant pool looked like but I thought the Hazard job would get someone with a stronger resume.

There is only 1 other coach in Greenup history that has an above .500 winning percentage that has coached at least 3 seasons.

Ty Scroggins had a below .500 record at Doss before getting Louisville Central.

 

Kevin Wallace was 10+ games below .500 after a 10 year stint at Warren East- also never having won a playoff game, before going to BG as an assistant and later getting the job.

 

Robbie Lucas had two bad years at Lincoln County for his first head coaching stint, then like Wallace, goes back to Somerset to be an assistant. Gets the job. The rest is history.

 

Doug Preston several games below .500 for his career at different stops before getting hired at Franklin-Simpson, despite a State Runner Up finish in ‘08 and a 10 win season at Western in ‘06.

 

The days of coaches packing up and moving their families for a profession that offers little to no (and sometimes a cut) financial incentive are long gone. Those are very few and far between, and usually there are some underlying reasons as to why (from there/coached there before & going home, retired from education and/or kids grown, specific family reasons, not married/no kids).

 

Sometimes it’s about doing the best w what you have until getting a better situation more conducive to winning. Those men were obviously good coaches all along. Not every place, very few in the grand scheme of things, are built to win.

Grizzle was a very young coach when Greenup hired him and he sought that job out despite knowing how hard it is to win there, historically. He's still very young, but now he's going somewhere with great tradition and a recent history of winning at a championship level. The years he spent running Greenup's program should allow him to hit the ground running at Hazard.

 

Every great coach had to start somewhere, and as you pointed out, some of the best in the game today endured their share of losing before arriving at that sweet spot where all of their prior experience collided with the right fit/opportunity.

He was in a tough district and played Russell (they were not in district until last season) and Raceland outside of district play.

And they were in a district with Ashland and Johnson Central. The same Johnson Central that has been to 5 straight state championships.
