April 18, 20197 yr So the Catholic Church doesn't own it? That seems strange to me...but if France Nationalized all buildings I guess that's how it happened. In 1905 France passed a law to remove all privledged status from the Catholic Church, which had previously been the official religion of France. When they passed this law, they seized all of the buildings of worship in the country as property of the state of France, while establishing a provision for the religious groups practicing religion in those buildings to continue to do so at no cost in those same buildings in perpetuity, given that they maintained all costs for the upkeep of the buildings and paid employees who worked there. So the Notre Dame Basilica itself is property of the French state, but is operated and maintained at the cost of the Archdiocese of Paris. Two of the contractors working on the renovations when the church caught fire were covered by a French national builders insurance policy, but France is yet to establish whether or not the insurance will cover andy costs for rebuilding. The Archdiocese of Paris has some insurance policies covering certain parts of the cathedral, including much of the art and the religious relics, but it is entirely unclear what the Archdiocese' insurance covers since the building is not property of the Archdiocese. This is going to be an insurance nightmare.

April 23, 20197 yr Well, the officials in France were saying it wasn’t arson while it was still on fire. That made me very suspicious as well. How could you "know" it was not arson when the building is still on fire?
