New football playoff format would pit Louisville schools...

Featured Replies

True but it doesnt lessen the gauntlet a struggling 3A team has to face.

Thats the basic argument right? and no one has suggested manipulating 3A or other playoffs b/c of how hard the path is - I don tthink?

Its not that 3A is better/stronger just that the road through all the eastern powers is maybe tougher on a struggling 3 team than for your 3 games??

Im trying to recall how many if any titles Wesstern 3A team have lately??

I disagree, because then it becomes a case of if the team were good enough, they could do it. There are teams in 3A that could win that string of games.

There's NO TEAM in the state of Kentucky in any class that could beat what Manual has in front of them (a month straight of games against the Big 3 on the road.)

That's the difference.

OK, bed time. Really.

and I could pick any number of 3A teams that have as little or even worse chance of beating those 3A powers.

As to the argument that the best two teams won't play in the final, life's tough. Its happened plenty of times in the past under the current system and thus in not a compelling reason not to change the system. For many a year, Highlands and CovCath were the best two teams in AAA, but played each other in the regional finals.

Playing the first two district games within the district is no different than what has been happening, successfully I might add, in basketball and other sports. It will save considerable money for the schools in the first two games. As to the gate, in most cases the gates for the first two games will be bigger, particularly the second game where in most cases 1 will be playing 2. The rematch should bring a big crowd. As most have observed, in the current system, the gates for the first two games have been fair at best and sometimes down right awful.

The third game will be on a rotation. This year the Louisville 4A district got a tough draw. Next year, it will not be the case.

The X and T head coaches have both said they have no problem being in the same district or playing earlier in the playoffs than the championship if that will help heal the acrimony that exists in the state between publics and privates. They are to be commended for their maturity. They understand to be the best, you must beat the best and it doesn't matter when it happens.

I sincerely doubt that this change is going to adversely affect the quality of football in the state. But if it does, I'm sure that it can be changed.

Most importantly to remember, is this whole thing could be revised if the KHSAA goes to 5 or 6 classes so we need to not get too overworked about it.

So, you think Brohm v Bush had no impact?
Not in this part of the state, and I doubt that it had much of an impact in other far-flung rural areas of the state.
I don't think you understand what we are upset about, the 'Ville isn't worried about winning the title, that will happen anyway, what we are upset about is the best teams will not meet in the finals, they will meet in the regionals. And the other Louisville schools will not get the chance to compete against teams out in the state during the playoffs. And the roads to the championship will not be equal. These will combine to lower the bar and make football less exciting.

Again, this really is only the case with Manual. I am not discounting Manual's supporters opinions, and I respect them.

Ok, bed time.

I'll leave saying that I know that this isn't horseshoes, and Manual's close calls don't count for all that much. But they count for something. The past few years, Manual's been competitve with the Big 3, and even if they haven't broken through and won that regional title, you can't deny that they've had their chance.

Under this new system, that chance is taken away. The district (and Trinity for this year) is just too competitve for what is setup. No team in Kentucky can make it through that gauntlet, I'll stand by that statement. If that's ok with some, that's their opinion. But teams like Manual and Butler and PRP deserve their chance just like a John Hardin and Scott County and Boone does, and to take it away just to give other schools an easier road isn't right. I mean, it gets a little easier for most of the other schools in the state, but it doesn't even get comparitivly harder for those Louisville schools. It goes WAY past that.

And I don't think that's right.

I agree with you. It gets harder for Manual. I don't think it changes anything substantively for PRP/Butler.

I have read all the posts and am still not sold that it is worse for FOOTBALL. If they pick neutral sites for the third round and above, or start toying with it more than they ahve, it might be.

If you think that, you're incorrect. Not to beat a dead horse, but there's a reason they've taken 15 of the last 18 spots for the State. AAA has FAR more parity than 4A. That's the big strength of the class.

Hummm, I believe Cov Cath and Highlands have 13 of 19 in 3A - not much of a difference if you ask me.

And thats 13 of 19 from the SAME DISTRICT - not different districts like your comparison.

Add to the equation that except for Boyles marvelous streak including 3 straight 3A crowns (2001,2,3)

ONLY 1 3A title has even come from the Western half of the bracket in the last 20 years (BG in 95)

So to recap for those scoring at home (and I certainly hope someone has been scoring:D )

In roughly the last 20 years of KY HS Football:

3A has had 16 of 20 champions from the Eastern half of the bracket

and 13 of those were from just 2 teams in the same district.

4A has had 9 champions from their Western half of the bracket

[ St.X 6, Male 2, Nelson Co. 1 ]

and 12 champions from the Eastern half of their bracket

[ Shelby Co. 1, Geo.Rogers Clark 1, the imaginary "eastern" school Trinity 10 ]

....and for those needing it stated that is 18 from just the Big 3 - T, X, & M.

So anyone willing to take off their Jeffersonian shades should be able to see that their situation is not that unique that everyone else is going to be quick to feel sorry for you

If I'm off by a number or 2 please feel free to point it out but I dont believe the overall issue being addressed here will be changed dramatically

ALways the voice of wisdom. As I read through last night's posts, I wondered if someone would actually read the entire thing. "Rotation" means that it will change regularly. No matter what year the rotation had those two districts playing, the same hue and cry would be created. So for the other years, you never know.

As you say, by my read, the Board is still looking at alignment options with no final decision. Seems like it would have been foolish to do much more on a rotation until you knew the alignment, so the first year is all that's out there.

In the end, a rotation allows someone different to play those third and fourth round games, and should add to the excitement and variety of the playoffs.

And your point on the first two rounds is right on time. As it is now, those have been terrible gates and sometimes terrible games. While some of the gamse may still be terrible, at least now they can be between rivals who haven't had to spend as much on travel, and can accumulate proceeds to help with other sports.

Who this helps, who this hurts.

R1D1- Potentially has to play one Big 3 instead of two

R1D2- Potentially has to play one Big 3 instead of two

R2D3- Potentally has to play one Big 3 instead of three

R2D4- Still has to play all the Big 3, but now in succession. (obviously X and H only have to play 2)

R3D5- Still has to play 2 Big three members but earlier

R3D6- Potentally has to play one Big 3 instead of two

R4D7- Potentially has to play one Big 3 instead of two

R4D8- Potentially has to play one Big 3 instead of two

Anyone want to tell me that they think Florida would have won the NCAA if they played Villianova then UConn then Duke for the first three rounds?

Of course the rest of the state loves this because now they have to topple one of these powers instead of two. Their trip to the championship just got twice, in one case three times, as easy.

I am not sure whether I like the new set up or not, but I find the whining by the Manual faithful to be comical.

There is a reason it is the big three instead of the big four. :D

If Butler and PRP had posters they would be "whining" also.

Just put your team in the same situation where your playoff road, that was previously the HARDEST, just was made harder at the benefit of everyone else. I guess your team would just A-OK with that.

Thank you for the compliment. The change actually makes sense, but I think people are upset because it "came out of the blue" and they were shocked by it.

After reading 5 pages of posts, some people think Louisville teams are getting the short end of the stick and the non-Louisville teams have a better chance of making it to the dance. This resembles how Frankfort treats Louisville on tax dollars, doesn't it? Sense this is the general consensus, we should move forward and prepare for a long season. One thing will be for sure, the non-Louisville teams will be embarrassed in the state final in 4A .

There is one thing I feel very strong about and that is the blind draw should be public.

We don't have all the details yet but this does NOT pass the smell test.

I think it should be public like the sweet sixteen is BUT I have no problems with this draw. Bob S. from NCC is on the board and I don't believe he would be part of something that wasn't done right and something that would intentionally/potentially harm the private schools.
