Conner 21 Beechwood 14 (scrimmage)

Final from Ft. Mitchell.

Score pretty indicative of the outcome. Conner fumbled twice inside their own 20. Beechwood had a pick 6 called back on a penalty. Great evening to watch football.

Conner D was the story in my opinion (at least from a Conner perspective). After letting Beechwood drive 80 yards for a score on their opening drive they really tightened up, swarmed to the ball, and played really well.

If you are keeping score, Beechwood went up 14-0 very quickly benefiting from the foot speed of Stringer, Slusher and Fieger. After that, the Tigers did very little. The short screens worked a little but going downfield was ineffective. Fieger had trouble with the ball from center all night. A few were bounced to him, some were very high and at least one sailed over his head. This will need fixing so not to through the timing off. They need to find a way to get Slusher more involved in the offense. Beechwood is not very big and they were pushed around by Conner for most of the second half. Some bright spots for the Tigers but many things were exposed. That's why we have these scrimmages. Conner's QB was very elusive and they have some nice speed players.

Tale of two halves. BW dominated first 30 minutes, scored on first possession without much resistance on several stringer runs and a nice scramble by Fieger. Conners TD to make in 14-7 after first 30 came about 10 minutes after clock expired, but it's. A scrimmage so they let them play. BW had two starting lineman sit the entire second half, not sure why, so had a make shift line including moving starting center to guard. That's when the snap issues started. BW hit one big play on a screen to stringer for about 60, and the place went silent when he didnt get up. Looked like a back issue, fell hard going full speed. If that's anything serious that's something Tigers can't afford.

Both teams looked very mediocre, but that's what a scrimmage is for. IMO Conner will struggle vs the big platooning teams in 6a. They aren't there yet, but JV looked line they had some great talent.

A tale of two halves in the varsity scrimmage. Beechwood controlled the first half completely until the last drive of the half for Conner. Beechwood intercepted a pass but there was a 15 yard penalty for some reason that was never clear. Conner then was able to make some key plays and grind out a drive to make it 14-7 at half in favor of Beechwood. Conner with a lot of mistakes and turnovers in the first half.

Second half, the roles reversed. Beechwood fumbled on the first play of their first drive. The committed several penalties causing their second drive to be 3 and out. Interception on the second play of their 3rd drive. Snapped a ball over the QB's head that led to a 3 and out on their 4th drive. Then moved downfield on their last drive and got stopped on fourth down near the goal line. Meanwhile Conner's offense got it together a little and put up two more scores around a couple series that ended in turnovers. The varsity scrimmage ending score was Conner 21-17.

Sloppy play by both teams but that is why you have these scrimmages.

In the JV scrimmage, Conner won 12-8. Beechwood had a good opening drive and scored. Conner hit an 80 yard TD pass to make it 8-6. Then Beechwood fumbled on their own 28. Conner worked their way to a score and the scrimmage ended there, Conner 12 Beechwood 8.

There also was a freshman scrimmage and the Beechwood freshmen looked very good. This was the highlight of night for Beechwood fans. Beechwood won this scrimmage 3 scores to none for Conner and Beechwood also had a safety to add to the margin. Conner's freshman QB looked very good but he got hurt about half way through the scrimmage. It looked like a concussion that happened on a sack and he was held out as a precaution. He was moving around fine on the sideline.

Conner (or even Beechwood fans) how does this Beechwood team compare to last year?

And Conner has to be much improved over last year?

Beechwood lost their whole interior line except one player and those players were very good. A couple of them are playing in college. They also lost their two best receivers after Slusher. Last year's team was better.

Conner might be a little better than they were last year, but not a big difference from what I recall.

Does anyone know the Conner frosh QB? Was it Camp? I hate to hear that someone was injured, esp. concussion.

The concussion is a guess by me. Please don't assume that is correct. Since the QB was walking and moving fine but did not go back in, that is my guess about what was wrong with him.

As I've stated in other threads, Conner is noticeably a bigger, stronger, and

faster team than last year. They only had 6 seniors on last year's team. Beechwood pounded them a year ago in the preseason scrimmage. Reality is this was only a scrimmage, however, I think it showed Conner is much improved over last year. Both teams still have many things to improve on, but from a Conner perspective I saw many things that were encouraging, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

To be fair, Conner's first TD did come after the clock expired in the first half. However, the same opportunity was afforded to Beechwood on their final drive in the second half as their final play(s) were run well after the clock hit 0:00.

Conner also had a stud at Middle Linebacker and at Nose, they were much more physical than Conner freshmen teams of the past. Beechwood freshmen looked really good at times and a little sloppy at others, but as everyone has stated that's what scrimmages are for....

Did you notice if the freshman MLB was also the QB that got injured as a previous post states? I believe they would be as he played both in the BC Pee Wee league. And yes, he is a stud LB.

BTW, the injury was not a concussion as was speculated. Kid should be good to go this week.
