Broadway Shows... You'd Be Surprised

Recommended Posts

Until 2013, I'd only seen Madeline, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Nutcracker, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein at the Lexington Opera House on school field trips, and Les Miserables in London (my Aunt helped take me on a study abroad trip and more or less insisted I go see the play with her, so I felt it was the least I could do). Aside from sitting beside a girl I thought was cute and holding hands during part of one of them in 7th grade... (huge deal if you remember 7th grade at all), I really wasn't a fan of Broadway.

Enter 2013, and my girlfriend is a big fan on Broadway. We go to see Avenue Q at one of the theaters in downtown San Antonio (really underrated arts scene here actually). I loved it. Has anyone else seen it? Definitely somewhat of a vulgar play and not one you'd take your younger kids to, but I must say it's hilarious.

This past week, we went to see The Book of Mormon at one of the more famous downtown theaters here (The Majestic, an old timey place on the Riverwalk). I didn't really like it as much as Avenue Q, but still thought it was pretty funny.

Before you laugh it off, I'd definitely suggest looking into seeing Avenue Q or The Book of Mormon. I never thought I'd be someone who'd enjoy them, but wow, they were hilarious. If you get the chance, I'd definitely go to check them out, you may be in for a pleasant surprise, even if you're someone who thinks "I'd never be caught dead at a Broadway Show".

If anyone has seen either of these shows, what are some other ones you'd recommend?

To put Avenue Q in perspective for those of you who might not be familiar, it's with puppets. Some are ran by two people. You really have to suspend belief with this one, which makes it that much more enjoyable.

I'd compare it to a more sophisticated South Park. There's puppet cursing, puppet sex, puppet everything.

Some of the main characters are:

Princeton, who sings "What Do You Do With a BA in English",

Trekkie Monster, singing "The Internet Is For Porn",

Gary Coleman, singing "Schadenfreude",

Nicky and Rod singing "If You Were Gay" (and strongly resembling Bert and Ernie)

Other characters include the Bad Idea Bears (resembling the Care Bears Gone Wild), and more.

I think that's enough for you to get the point of this one.

If any of this sounds like it'd be funny to you, I suggest you go. It's definitely not for everyone, but it changed my mind about Broadway.

Heading to NYC Dec 1 for the UK/Providence Basketball game. We are thinking about a show on Sat. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Never been to NYC.....

My rule of thumb when it comes to Broadway Musicals, the first you must see is Phantom of the Opera. It is the Michael Jordan of musicals and longest running act. I have seen Phantom three times now.

My wife was looking at Wicked tix last night.....$200.00

I know that's a lot of money, but trust me, it is totally worth it. I've never been to a Broadway show that I didn't enjoy. And the story is only part of it. The production and music will blow you away.

Probably similar. The thing about seeing it on Broadway is that their stage will be more catered for the production.

Ok thanks for the info. Whatever we see I'm sure it will be an awesome experience. We scored 15 row seats behind the bench for the game and my boy Merril Hoge hooked us up with rooms at the Roosevelt hotel. I'm super pumped....
