2013 37th District Tournament Preview

In the Season Preview we asked a series of 10 pressing questions regarding the 10th Region as a whole. One of those questions was this: Which two teams make it out of the loaded 37th District? We now get to look forward to having that question answered. We feel very certain we know one of those teams, but it's the battle for that coveted second spot in the 10th Region Tournament that will captivate fans over the next few days.

Top-seeded Bishop Brossart went undefeated in District (and Regional) play and have held the #2 spot in 10th Region rankings for most of the season. Brad Carr's Scott Eagles earned the second seed, having lost only to the Mustangs. Campbell County & head coach Aric Russell have spent most of the season trying to get a roster with 100% health. Having lost to both the 'Stangs & Eagles, the Camels are seeded third. Calvary Christian & Silver Grove are the two bottom seeds.

The Pairings (all games at Campbell County Middle School)

#4 Calvary Christian vs. #5 Silver Grove- Feb. 18th 6:00 pm

#1 Bishop Brossart vs. #4 Calvary Christian/#5 Silver Grove winner- Feb. 19th 6:00 pm

#2 Scott vs. #3 Campbell County- Feb. 19th 7:30 pm

Championship- Feb. 21st 7:00 pm

Players To Watch

How about this for an All-District starting five: Justin Saunders and Alex Trentman of Bishop Brossart, Corey Holbrook and Nate McGovney of Campbell County, & Nick Jackson of Scott. Even old & decrepit mcpapa could coach that team to tremendous success. Seriously, those five players help prove why the 37th has been and will continue to be such a dogfight.

The Mustangs have a lot of guys that contribute--namely senior point guard Ben Uebel & junior big man Drew Burns--but the team leader is Saunders & Trentman's athleticism is a matchup problem for most opponents.

Josh Felts provides a good second scorer for Scott, while the Holbrook/McGovney duo are complemented well by sophomore swingman Deondre Jackson & freshman big man Matt Wilson.

Calvary Christian brings a worthy duo of its own in senior forward Nick Whitt and senior guard Jake Lamb. The Big Trains of Silver Grove are led by senior forward Dallas Dunaway, who wins the "Best Name in the 10th Region" award by a landslide.

Our Predictions

Calvary Christian & Silver Grove split their two regular season games, both of them winning by 6 on their respective home floors. We look for the Big Trains to choo choo () their way to the next round. But it may take an overtime or two to get there.

It's a different story, however, in that next round. Mike Code's 'Stangs should have no problems advancing to the Thursday night championship game.

The most anticipated contest is easily the #2 vs. #3 matchup between Scott & Campbell County. The Eagles won the regular season game with relative ease on January 22nd. The Camels responded with vastly improved play, winning 6 of their last 8 games. The Eagles have lost 3 of their last 4, including an 8-point defeat at the hands of Highlands. This one could most certainly go either way, but we're taking the Camels in a nail-biter.

If we're right, that means the Thursday night title game will be an emotional one to put it mildly, as these two crosstown rivals go at it for the 37th crown. We look for the Mustangs to get a bit of revenge from last year's difficult loss to the Camels & advance to the 10th Region Tournament as the kings of the 37th District.

Absolutely no bias. If anything, the three of us that contribute to the 10th Region articles are "Bracken, Clark and Mason" folks, with no ax to grind against anyone from the 37th. Scott was playing its best ball a month ago. Campbell County has shown improvement in that month, while it appears to us that the Eagles have fallen off a bit. Even with that being said; it's anyone's game, with the Camels' playing at "home away from home" possibly tipping the scales in their favor.

Whichever team wins, we look forward to a great contest!

Don't agree one bit Scott handled Campbell. Even if Mcgovney is "100%" which he isn't. It wouldn't have made a difference. This article seems a bit biased! You a Campbell fan?

So let us know, what % is Nate at then? I want to tell him so that expectations are clear. Thanks

Didn't mean for that to sound nasty. Just thought putting it out there that Scott lost to Highlands is a bad argument. I believe Campbell lost to Highlands as well. You are making it seem like McGovney will make a 20 point swing in things when he only scored like 8 vs Ryle (a week back). I understand Scott isn't playing that great. But earlier in the season they had a 4 or 5 game streak where they were playing bad like this and they busted out of it and turned it into some of the best ball they have played since Kellen Smith was there. You don't know for sure which Scott team will show up or if McGovney will make a difference for the Camels. We won't know until Tuesday. I expect it to be an exciting game.

Realizing it is a win or go home situation against a rival I expect Scott to turn it up a notch. I also expect Campbell to do the same. But head to head both teams playing good basketball I think Scott is the better team. They can go 8, 9, even sometimes 10 men deep and still expect good basketball to be played. The difference in this game is who will spark a fire off the bench will it be little McGovney or will it be Kevin Jehn for Scott. Both good guards. Excited to see this game Tuesday at the Middle School!
