July 23, 201214 yr I have no problem with vacating the wins and a bowl ban of reasonable length, but I do take issue with the loss of scholarships. The NCAA has wrecked Penn State's program for a decade. And they should have killed it completely.

July 23, 201214 yr Is it anywhere near apples and apples to compare this situation to the one at Baylor a few years back? No. There were numerous rules violations at Baylor in addition to the criminal acts by people in the program. I heard a clip of Emmert's comments this morning. He admitted that today's actions by the NCAA are unprecedented, that this was a very unique situation and that he doesn't feel the NCAA opened Pandora's Box with their actions in this case.

See, I would say this might be one of the only instances in which you could get every school on board with. If you talk to them and ask "should anyone and/or institution value it's coaches/program/university more than the welfare of defenseless children?" I would imagine you would get a resounding "No" from everyone. As far as the punishment, it will affect the university (in the form of the fine), it will affect the football program (in the form of loss of scholarships and postseason ban), and it will affect the (former) head coach (in the form of vacated wins). By allowing the current players to immediately transfer and be eligible, you are lessening the imact it has on them (which is usually NOT the case when programs are punished). This is a combination of punishment for Penn State for past deeds, and a warning shot across the bow of everyother program for the future. And I think every other program took notice today. And while publicly they may not acknowledge any changes because of it (because that may be admitting neglect in the first place), I think there will be many more people keeping "an eye on things" or considering/investigating serious allegations a little bit more from now on.
July 23, 201214 yr I'm with VOR and the others that think this is a huge increase in power by the NCAA. Sure, the very vague language in the bylaws gives them wiggle room, but they're making a power grab in order to save face with a furious public. Before today, the NCAA has only been concerned with competitive balance (unless I'm forgetting something). That has all changed now. July 23, 201214 yr I fully expect to see the by laws of the NCAA amended to make it clear that the NCAA has jurisdiction over these types of matters. I'm not sold on the jurisdiction under the current reading of the by laws. Not an issue here because PSU consented. The next time the NCAA tries to do something under such circumstances, the offending school may not consent. Time to amend the by laws.

If so, I'll say this. The NCAA did everything they could to make sure the program and institution suffered but limit the damage to the current players.

Which is why I disagree with those who think the NCAA did wrong. The current kids will still receive a free education. The school and program deserve everything happening to them right now.

With the way the bylaws read now, the NCAA has a hunting license with omnipotent powers and there isn't much any institution could do fight back.

July 24, 201214 yr I will admit I haven't read every post. I am on record saying I didn't agree with everyone else on their feelings towards Joe Pa. I will say After truly reading the report I do question JoePa and several others people behavior including some parents of couple of the childern As for the NCAA - they are truly a joke. Talk about quick to convict. I would like to see them take more time. I have no problem with 90% of what they did. I disagree with the loss of 40 scholarships. They are putting kids in danger. There will be kids play for PSU that are not as talented playing in the BIG10 and could get hurt. Also there are 50 Junior and Seniors that the broke it off in today.

Appalachian St didn't seem to mind. Or any other small DI or DII school (or whatever it's called now) that schedules BCS teams annually.
