Depth matters in college football. It means Penn State can sign fewer players than their competitors, and a couple of players leaving, flunking out or suffering a long-term injury puts a bigger dent in the talent pool.

 

And please, spare us the preaching about the heinousness of the crimes and Penn State's administrative negligence. No one – no one – disputes any of that stuff.

 

They still have 65 scholarship players and need 11 at a time on the field. Are they at a disadvantage? Sure. Life is tough sometimes. I was disputing the claim that they would get beaten like red headed step children because of it. Stick to the argument at hand and not try to spin what I said out of context. Thanks.

As the governing body of college sports, the NCAA is part of that process. As a result Penn State has consequences it must live with. Reduction of scholarships is one of those justified punishments for what happened...

Scholarship reduction aside, the stigma of the program is enough for me to think they will fall on hard times the next few seasons. They have been ok of late, but the talent gap between them and the elite teams has been apparent of late. If they had a full allotment of scholarships, I am not seeing a wealth of talent wanting to play there until some of the dust settles, especially knowing you have no chance of competing for a conference title until 2017. They pretty much went belly up last year when everything started coming to the surface.

His being employed certainly increases the culpability and liability of the school, I would think.

Big Ten has banned Penn State from the Conference Championship Game for four years and will not share any bowl revenue with Penn State

So the NCAA CAN do it because they DID do it? That's like saying PSU CAN cover up Sandusky because they DID cover up Sandusky.

 

And I'm not really comfortably with the NCAA deciding who to punish based on their "feeling a need" to do so.

 

Penn St can and now have to deal with the consequences. The same way the NCAA and Big Ten must deal with the consequences of the sanctions put on a team within their association and conference.

 

Many more people would feel the NCAA isn't doing their job if they let PSU slide without consequence than those that feel they should've stayed out of it. Personally, I'll never understand the argument of the NCAA should've stayed out of it. You guys are acting like the NCAA is so far off that they took $60 million from the science department.

What NCAA sanctions have ever gone even close to this level in making sure the players have as many options as humanly possible? That line of thinking died with the announcement of sanctions. If anyone wants to go, they are free to do so. Anyone signing on now knows the deal. Weak. Sauce...

I'm still not getting now kids getting a free education are being punished. Befuddles me. My bill and this parent plus loan we just took out for year 1 of college is screaming at me saying these fine young athletes aren't getting punished for their free educations that they are now able to receive at almost any fine FBS school that will take them. I'll say it again. Some punishment. I wish my kid could get punished like that.

The NCAA's role in this matter is very debatable.
