That's incredible, I just read about this a few days ago.

The Globe and Mail described it like this: “A member of Joint Task Force 2 killed an Islamic State insurgent with a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle while firing from a high-rise during an operation that took place within the last month in Iraq. It took under 10 seconds to hit the target.”

 

A .50 caliber rifle is certainly capable of reaching out to that distance. To do so requires a significant amount of math. A sniper would have to adjust his point of aim for the distance (compensating for the drop of the heavy bullet), wind speed at locations between the sniper and his target, elevation and humidity. As the target is a ISIS soldier, the sniper also has to anticipate his movements between the time of the trigger pull and impact.

 

The 3,450-meter shot equates to 2.14 miles.

Let that soak in for a minute...it took a shot from a sniper rifle a little less than 10 seconds to reach the target. 10 seconds is an eternity when you're thinking about a gun shot

The McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle has been used for #1 #3 and #4.

An Accuracy International L115A3 .338 Lapua was used for #2

A Barrett M82A1 .50 Cal was used for #5

 

Those are all excellent guns designed to do exactly what they did. #6 longest was just 15 yards shorter than #5 and the target was hit twice at that range. What high tech firearm was used for those two single shots?

First shot hit the forks of a bicycle at over 2500 yards and the second shot hit an Vietnamese weapons transporter at the same distance. No one would confuse this beast with the precision instruments used by modern snipers.

 

That shot was made by arguably the greatest sniper in US History, GSgt. Carlos Hathcock USMC.

Forget about the gun, the difference in optics today versus when GSgt. Hathcock made his shot are like living on Earth versus the moon.
