  1. Congrats to Jacob Smith! Jacob is an awesome young man, he will be truly missed at NewCath. I look forward to getting the opportunity to watch him play Thomas More.
  2. I agree with you, this Newport team has talent. The lack of discipline reflects the leadership from the top to the bottom. Mullins has talent but that is all he has. I don't expect him to reach to the next level. Covington and Hollis are the same. The only hope for Hollis is that he is a sophomore and may mature after players like Mullins and Covington are gone. The bright spots on this team is Snapp and Davis; these two young men are student/athletes. If Coach Snapp had a full squad of players like Davis and Snapp, there would be no stopping them.
  3. Newport should be competitive this season. Snapp will need to keep his players head together. Keep up with their academics and discipline at school.
  4. Jacob Smith is a talented player. NewCath showed good character throughout the game. Newport had some good moments but lack senior leadership. Coach Viox is a good fit for Newport. Coach Viox will improve Newport fit the future.
  5. Withrow is 5-4 with a very tough schedule.
  6. Withrow head coach stated in an interview that he had 2 new cornerbacks starting, one being a sophomore (#8) IMO those guys did a terrific job. Not having a lot of varsity experience might have hurt them because they were running with the wide receicers to the bleachers each play! I see #8 and #9 becoming great players. They both also went both ways and played wide receiver.
  7. Well I'm not sure who any of these coaches are but I wish them luck. Let's just hope that they have familiarized themselves with the kids that have been on the roster this past season. Believe or not Newport still has a lot of talent in the school. The group that is left can be a aggressive group if they are coached in the right manner.
  8. For years when you mentioned Newport baseball you always knew who what family was in charge of the program. Ray and Grady Brown were the ones that molded boys into men. Is there a replacement for Grady out there? True there will be a replacement but no one will ever be the coach that he and his brother were to the players.
  9. Coach Russell is an outstanding individual and yes he had to make adjustments to coach at Newport - and yes he has helped a lot of families in the Newport area. I wish him all the best at CC and I'm sure he will have a long and successful years at CC. When I refer to discipline I'm referring to the fact that there comes a time in life when one must install self discipline on them selves and not have to rely on someone else to install it on you. When you reached a sophomore in high school you should know what it takes to get yourself a better life - Coach Russell did all he could do for a lot of kids in Newport - he will be missed and I for one hope to attend a few games at CC to cheer him on.
  10. Well if that's the case - let's hope that he is makes a good decision based on someone that can keep the program going forward and install discipline.
  11. Well first let me give Coach Russell congrats for getting the opportunity to go back to his old school. Coach Russell IMO was a good coach at Newport. The only area I believe he lacked was in discipline with some of his players. Russell has had a lot of talent over the years at Newport but when you have some players that couldn't accept discipline IMO he adjusted to get through a season. This team (2009 / 10) that got Russell to the top was a very well discipline team - they had parents that were firm and respectful to the school, Coach Russell and their children - the parents kept their kids in check and focused on their futures. As far as the talent at Newport being slim IMO that is false - there is a lot of talent there still, it just needs to be directed in right direction and have discipline put in place. Mr. Rice (AD) has a great opportunity to bring in someone that will put it all in place and build a well balanced team while cleaning house of those that cannot accept a well balanced and disciplined program. Coach Russell - I wish you well and good luck with CC - you will be missed - you're a good caring person and you did IMO what it took to have a descent program at Newport - thank you.
  12. So the game is June 10th? What time is going to start?
  13. I'm glad to hear that Cody Short (Newport) is playing. Short os a good kid that if not for a injury would have had a awesome year.
  14. Any word on Cody Collins? Collins was IMO the true leader of the team.
  15. Damarkco was not instructed to miss the game. He rode down on the bus with the team.
  16. I asked Damarkco and he said the coach never told him to skip the game.
  17. I don't know much about Smith but Rogg IMO would be the best fit for Dayton at the QB position.
  18. I agree with you but you've also got to consider the playing style of Collins too. Collins is the intimidating factor. Collins has the ability to keep the other team's players in an uproar and they get caught up with it and loose focus on their game. Then you have Sizemore too. Sizemore is the one that other teams loose focus on too. Teams tend to disregard Sizemore and before you know it he has came down the floor and hit 4 or 5 three's. The sixth man for Newport is Tucker and he has the ability to hit the three once he gets his range set.
  19. Brandon Sizemore - Newport - will be a big factor this season.
  20. I agree with you 100%. Seems like a lot of schools have benefited from a solid transfer. True there is no guarantee a solid transfer will get you a championship but it does help. Foster came to Newport and was the missing piece of the puzzle for Newport to be solid. McDaniels, Collins, Luther and Sizemore are not doubt a awesome group but they still needed one more solid player to become a threat. Transfer are becoming a increasing factor for all of the sports programs.
  21. If anyone remembers for about 5 years the Police / Fire football game was an annual event involving a lot of area high school players that now serve local cities. The game started out in Dayton then at Bellevue before moving to Highlands. I believe the last game was played about 4 years ago when the police / fire chiefs decided too many officers and firefighters were getting hurt.
  22. IMO Newport should have a descent run at the 9th Region next year too. Yes they will be loosing a lot of seniors this season but they do have a lot of juniors from this team. The only reason IMO you're not hearing much of this group is because Coach Russell doesn't use his bench as effectively as other coaches have mastered. Coach Russell is a good coach and has been more aggressive this season than in the past and has been blessed with an excellent group of seniors this season. The addition of Foster was a major effect to the team. But IMO this group of juniors has a lot of speed and drive. Not much in the height area but they should be able to produce a fast pace game that will also help them with a more aggressive defense.
  23. Darnell had a good career at Newport. I believe he was just a few points shy of a 1000. Its a different team when you replace a Darnell with a Foster. Foster has been the missing piece to the puzzle for Coach Russell.
  24. Foster has been a major plus for Newport this season. Newport was expected to have a great year but Foster has got to be a major factor in their success.
