My apologies to @Randy Parker....I think he was looking at the update thread, and I said the 2pt. conversion was no good.........from my vantage point way up in the parking lot I didn't think it was good. Sorry Randell K.

Just by my updates I got Jacob Smith for 15 carries 265 yards and 2 TD's.

 

Nice fumble recovery and return for the TD by Austin Neff.

Jacob Smith is a talented player. NewCath showed good character throughout the game. Newport had some good moments but lack senior leadership. Coach Viox is a good fit for Newport. Coach Viox will improve Newport fit the future.

NewCath blows out Newport, 48-8

 

Now that the Newport Central Catholic football team has run through its annual big-school gauntlet and started taking on schools its own size, confidence is soaring. And the wins keep coming.

 

Playing in a neighborhood battle for the Fireman's Bell, the Thoroughbreds put a running clock on host Newport then ran the Wildcats off the field with a 48-8 Class 2A district win at Newport Stadium.

 

Jacob Smith keyed the Thoroughbreds' attack while zooming up the school's career rushing yardage list. The running back rambled for 260 yards on 15 rushes. He averaged 17.3 yards per carry while pushing his season total to 1,084, his third straight 1,000-yard season.

 

 

Smith scored a pair of touchdowns, one on a 61-yard first-quarter scamper that put NewCath on the board, the other on a three-yard run for a 28-0 Thoroughbreds lead with 5:30 to go before halftime. He entered play fifth on NewCath's all-time rushing list and finished the contest third all-time, with 3,886 yards.

 

The senior standout needs 347 yards to move into second place on the school's all-time list. He ran for 124 yards, 89 on one carry, during a single drive Friday, the result of NewCath negative penalty yardage on the possession. The Thoroughbreds scored four plays after the big run, on John Harris' second rushing touchdown of the game. That helped give them a 42-0 lead and the advantage of a running clock with 4:06 left in the third quarter.

 

NewCath, 5-4 and ranked ninth in The Enquirer coaches' poll, has won three straight games. All have come in Class 2A District 6 play, after the Thoroughbreds lost four of their first six contests, every one against bigger schools.

 

"Confidence comes with winning. It's huge," NewCath coach Dan Wagner said. "But, we still got a long ways to go. Our focus right now is not beating ourselves."

 

NewCath outgained the Wildcats, 388-168 in total yards, while amassing 370 on the ground. The Thoroughbreds finished 3-0 in the district. They clinched the regular-season district crown last week.

 

"Coach always schedules us tough at the beginning, but it gets us ready for games like this, and the playoffs," said Smith. "I have a lot of confidence in this team. I think we're all confident right now."

 

The Wildcats fell to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the district. Newport running back Tyree Bolden and quarterback Tyler Porter both rushed for 56 yards.

 

The Thoroughbreds have won 35 consecutive regular-season district games. They are 12-0 in regular-season district play in coach Wagner's three years as head coach. They are 32-0 in regular-season play since joining Class 2A District 6 in 2007. NewCath's last regularly scheduled district loss was to Beechwood on Sept. 30, 2006, as a Class A program.

 

NewCath defensive lineman Austin Neff also got in on the scoring with a 15-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, good for a 35-0 third-quarter lead. Reserve tailback Kole Carmack's two-yard TD run made it 48-0 with 7:56 to play.

 

"I feel like we're getting better every game," said Neff, who scored for the first time this season.

 

Playing against NewCath defensive reserves, Newport ruined the 'Breds shutout bid with a 41-yard TD run by Porter, who then hit receiver Ryan Ochoa with the two-point conversion pass with 33.5 seconds left.
