How do programs recover from discouraging seasons?
Calico Jack replied to sidelinedoc's topic in KY Football (High School)
1) Schedule better (play people worse than you). 2) Hopefully get better talent coming up. Anybody that doesn’t think these two things don’t hold true, or should I say these two factors don’t play more than the majority of their roles in determining success are just kidding themselves. -
Open Job: Estill County
Calico Jack replied to Colonels_Wear_Blue's topic in KY Football (High School)
Mike Jones and Hoover Niece are special people and coaches. For a program that’s not any kind of a traditional power they sure have had stability there. Their facilities are average at best and maybe not even that. Home bleachers that are more or less those of a glorified visiting side (with no visitor bleachers). Extremely rural community with transportation hardships for those that live outside of Irvine. -
The positive is that they at least have a shot to win their district the next four years. That goes a long way in building a program. The negative is that this program has been a revolving door dumpster fire for most coaches, and in being that they still let a guy go after two years.

3A #1 Boyle County vs 3A Lawrence County
Calico Jack replied to charlesw88's topic in KY Football (High School)
Lawrence County playing Boyle County close, let alone upsetting them would be beyond monumental. Let’s just get that perfectly clear. However, Lawrence County is a different animal when it comes to their scheme and ground game. They are straight up, 100% flexbone just like you see from the service academies, Georgia Tech, etc. They are different unlike anything Boyle has had to defend, and not just Boyle, but most don’t ever have to defend it. As somebody else said, anytime you hang 70+ points on a team and a good team at that then you are doing something. Do I think Lawrence wins? No. Do I think they make this way more than just a little uncomfortable for Boyle? I think so, at least if nothing more than a half. Then again it might be a blow out from the gates, but this one is interesting to watch. -
Class 3A Playoffs: Larue County at #6 Caldwell County
Calico Jack replied to zebraman's topic in KY Football (High School)
Union County also was a common opponent this year. Caldwell winning 40-14 and LaRue beating Union in the 1st round 48-29. -
3A Russell vs. 3A Thomas Nelson
Calico Jack replied to GOREDDEVILS's topic in KY Football (High School)
There really isn’t that much of a difference in the styles of offense between to the two. Thomas Nelson runs the Wing T. Kyle Boblitt, their head coach, played under Mark Brown and runs it just as he does- . They’ve rushed for over 2,000 yards and thrown for over 800. Russell, who runs many of the same schemes just chooses to do it from the gun being a TFS program. One chooses to do things under center, which often comes w some unfair negative connotations while the other takes a snap from 4-5 yards deeper. Put me in the camp that will be shocked to see this one blown open by either squad. If it is, it’s due to one or the other getting turnover happy. -
Logan County/Hopkinsville Updates

Whatever the crew. That’s a joke on them. Sad for those actually involved in the game. -
Does Fulton County have a shot beating Russellville?
Calico Jack replied to Bac2369's topic in KY Football (High School)
Russellville appears to be down this year, but "the past few years"? They've have been to region finals, semis (15 & 16) and even 9/10 win 2nd round seasons even dating back to when they played up in 3A dating back to 2007. -
If you could build a 1A All-Star team?
Calico Jack replied to Bac2369's topic in KY Football (High School)
My exact thoughts. -
I totally agree. There is way too much made about scheduling, contenders/pretenders, etc on here and just in general. I get it- it makes for good chatter and for the time to go by, but the fact is that by in large the same teams that have always been in the mix will almost always be in the mix. There are plenty of schools out there where 6-5 to occasionally playing in a region title are the best they’ve ever done, and unless the stars align just perfect that’s the best they are ever going to do. And, that’s ok.

Wayne County 57 Warren East 40

They weren’t exactly trying to stop a bunch of thick ankled- slow guys in Warren East. Short on speed they are not. -
Kickers: the under-appreciative position
Calico Jack replied to Jo-Jo13's topic in KY Football (High School)
Play nobody’s and move up spots while getting your schedule crapped on? Or Play formidable opponents and heaven forbid lose....in August or anytime early in the season? Everybody wonders if you’re really worth a crap. Join me in the crowd that has a good chuckle at that. -
1A #6 Campbellsville vs. 4A Taylor County
Calico Jack replied to Bac2369's topic in KY Football (High School)
These games are scheduled a year or two in advance. Adair County was just coming off the 3 best years in their programs history- winning playoff games in each of those three years. -

AP and it’s warranted IMO. Y’all can make of the rankings what you want, but like I stated earlier in regards to 3A- you have a handful that are legit contenders. The next 12-15 in the big picture aren’t that far apart. Give or take here or there. -
Kickers: the under-appreciative position
Calico Jack replied to Jo-Jo13's topic in KY Football (High School)
I know you (as you should be) & I are on the Tilghman Train, but having him also? Even more of a reason to have them in the Top 5-6 (and I don’t care what happens this week against Mayfield- Tilghman could lose and still should be in one of those spots). -
Kickers: the under-appreciative position
Calico Jack replied to Jo-Jo13's topic in KY Football (High School)
Without question, other than QB, maybe the single most important position(s) on the field. Field position is even more underrated. If you have a punter that can flip the field and pin people, a kicker that everytime you score is going to put it in the end zone or cause people to start inside or around their 20 and a place kicker who is automatic + can get you 3 when needed? If you have even just an average offense and defense you will win games if you have these guys kicking the ball. Have an offense and defense that is above average to go along with this? You’re in business. You watch the people playing deep in November and in the finals- they don’t have joe average kickers. -
Biggest Takeaways from Two Weeks in Class 3A?
Calico Jack replied to gchs_uk9's topic in KY Football (High School)
Absolutely correct. The first handful? Arguments to make a run at it? That 6,7-20 spot there isn’t that much difference at all IMO. -

Calico Jack replied to gchs_uk9's topic in KY Football (High School)
I mentioned in another thread that PT could make a strong case at the #6 spot, and in the AP poll they were #5. I could get on board with that. Past that 5-6 spot, though? I’m not sure there is a lick of difference between teams there down to say the 20 spot when all is said and done. But that could also be said for most, if not all classes. There are a slew of teams within a TD or two of one another IMO. Home or Away? Break here, break there? Yeah, there are a whole bunch in that “pretty good ball club” group, but they are not contenders. -

I can get on board with that. Didn’t know they had them at 5th. -

Calico Jack replied to Ram's topic in KY Football (High School)
My thoughts exactly and I know they are in a “show me” type deal with most, but I’m not so sure they aren’t the 6th best team in 3A right now. No offense to the others in the bottom half, but I don’t that any of them want to see Tilghman right now. -

I’m gonna go on record in saying that it wouldn’t matter on tape or not. At least in regards to what I’m asking. -

About what I expected- especially in regards to that last part, but you aren’t alone in the masses, so I wouldn’t worry about it. I just see all kinds of opinions on here, but when those opinions are systematically challenged into detail then more times than not they aren’t ever answered. -

I didn’t see it. You’re the one commenting on it. I’d just like to hear some more detailed descriptions is all. Don’t bust mine for posting detailed questions instead of just hearing vague, run of the mill descriptions and taking them for what they’re worth on your end. I’ve actually asked some pretty basic questions football 101 wise.
