Holy Cross vs Notre Dame 35th District Final Tonight
Combs for HHS and Lewis for NC both fouled out, and Combs sat the entire 2nd quarter. NC played a different defensive game this time around and it lead to several turnovers. That, combined with the Birds' inability to make shots at the charity stripe and from 3-4 feet in, was a recipe for an "L".

Agree 100%. Often times it seems they just need to drive to the basket.

Birds earn their 20th win of the year in a game marred by many unforced turnovers. In a game where the Birds didn't shoot particularly well, they got after it defensively posting what seemed like more than 10 steals, which lead to several fast break chances. Unfortunately they didn't convert on most of them, otherwise the game would have easily been in the 12-15 point range throughout as opposed to 4-6 points for much of the 2nd half. Unofficially Alex Combs lead the Birds with 13 points and 7 steals. As has been the case all year the Birds sealed the game at the line in the 4th quarter, leading to the final margin. Last home game is tomorrow night vs. Lloyd on Senior night at 5:00, followed by the Boys' Senior night at 7:00, also vs. Lloyd.

Completely agree with RCC9. Great intensity on defense was the key for the Birds tonight. Stadtmiller was held in check all night by great defense by the Birds. Ms. Graves is carrying the team offensively the past few games which shows the balance the team has. On a side note, the 10th region zebras reared their ugly heads but the Birds were able to overcome a few bad calls late, especially a rather quick 5 second call at mid court and a highly suspect 3rd foul on Adler which IMO was an easy jump ball. To be fair, BB had a few questionable calls go against them too, it just seemed as if they were early in the game. All in all it was a very entertaining game by 2 tenacious squads who no one wants to face in the post season.

Newport Central Catholic coaching staff "dropping like flies"
To say he was a disciplinarian doesn't do him justice. Good luck to the coaches as they move on. I know they'll miss Krog's field management skills at Moescher

2014 Top NKY Freshman Teams and Players to watch?
Knowing his father as well as I do, I can personally attest that he is NOT throwing his "cutter" as you call it. He throws a very effective cut fastball.

Murray Out, Bradshaw In At Campbell County
Haven't followed this thread closely but why is it such voodoo to post a parents' name if you know it. While it may be bush league to trash a HS kid on this board, the parents don't deserve the same protection. And BTW, the NCC QB's last name is the same as the Campbell County Attorney... Franzen.

Wow. The 9th region is really wide open this year. Notre Dame seized control early in the game and didn't look back. The Pandas' ability to drive inside the lane and get easy buckets and the Birds inability to stop penetration was the key difference in the game IMO, followed closely by a number of unforced turnovers by the Birds. The Birds' shooting was off tonight but as the saying goes, good shooters have to keep shooting. They'll eventually fall but didn't last night. Good perimter defense by the Pandas had a lot to do with it. It also didn't help that the Birds' best 2 outisde shooters (Adler & Combs) fouled out. Should be an interesting horse race in the 9th region as any one of 5 or 6 teams could win it and play in Bowling Green in March.

Campbell County/Highlands Predictions
That explains why there was a running clock in the HHS v UC game last Saturday. Back to the thread, HHS starters play the 1st half and win by daylight. Kuddos to Lickert for scheduling the Birds.

Highlands 2 Newport Central Catholic 1 (Boys)
According to a seasoned NCC parent I spoke to after the game, the game was a microcosm of recent NCC seasons, good defense and a lack of consistent offense. Expecting a lot of 1 nil, 2-1 games up on the hill.

St. Henry 3 Highlands 2 (9th Region Tourney)
Only the misinformed would have thought that... Kuebbing can bring it... Throwing a CG 110 pitch effort after a long layoff was very very impressive. Not surprised by the HBPs after the layoff. Good luck to the Cru vs. Ryle tonight.

9th region predictions
Sounds like the winners might want to avoid the Cru in the 1st game... Bottom line is all 8 qualifiers can run out a high quality pitcher on Monday so all 4 games should be good ones...

NKY JV Tournaments Brackets
Not sure what those six mentioned are hitting on the season, and perhaps we didn't see them at their best, but those six players were 2-16 at the plate versus Highlands... Nussbaum was the best hitter I saw... going 2-3. I give a slight edge to Scott. Sowder is a fine hitter. Of course it all depends on who is pitching for both squads....

NKY JV Tournaments Brackets
Taking nothing away from Beechwood, but they only had 4 hits (all singles) in their quarterfinal win vs. Highlands. Other than Fieger's excellent pitching performance, I didn't see anything from the Tigers that made me think they were world beaters. Wasn't aware at the time that Fieger hadn't pitched for JV all season before the JV tourney. Although Beechwood is a solid team, having seen Ryle, Conner, and Scott play, the Tigers' offense isn't as prolific as Ryle. I give the edge to the Raiders in what should be a good final 4.

NKY JV Tournaments Brackets
You may get your wish with today's rains and the forecast for tomorrow. By throwing 7 innings yesterday Fieger would not be eligible to pitch in the finals on Saturday.
-
Beechwood 3 Highlands 1 (JV)
Well played game all the way around. Pitching was excellent on both sides with Fieger striking out 8 and Bunning striking out 7. Beechwood strung their 4 hits together with Nussbaum leading the Tigers with 2 hits. DJ Mills led the Birds with 2 of their 6 hits. Highlands' JV season ends with a 20-8 record.

Dixie 11 Covington Catholic 10
11-10 complete game win surely is an oddity... but as Old Bulldog says, a win over the Blue Colonels is always good for the Red Colonels.

2013 Freshmen 9th Region Tournament
No dog in this fight but I view #3 above a bit differently than a straight steal of 2nd of 3rd base up 10+ runs. Staying out of a force out is smart baseball. Once you are up 10+ runs I can see advocating station to station base running.
