Just heard last night at the Newcath hoops game that Steve Kroger is out, Steve Fromeyer "bye bye", & now Kevin Gray gone to Ludlow. :(

 

What the hell is going on?????? That's 3 quality coaches right there, and losing Roy Daines years ago was the biggest mistake ever made IMO.

 

Sidenote: I have yet had a chance to talk to any of these gents to get the full scope.

Kevin took an offer to move up and take over a program as a varsity coach so I see why he left. I don't think that had anything to do with NCC, just that it was a move he couldn't pass up.

 

In regards to Fro, he was already a basketball coach at Scott and it makes sense to me that he would move to one school to coach both sports.

 

I was unaware that Kroger was leaving the program.

 

I'm certain that the NCC administration and Coach Schulkens will replace the freshmen staff with more qualified coaches.

Coaches move on for different reasons, but to lose that freshman staff will be a blow...IMO. Fro told everyone last spring that he was moving on after the season, so that's no surprise there. Steve Kroger was there because of Kevin, so his moving on would probably signal his intent to go to Ludlow? I could be wrong about that, but it seems logical. I'd have to ask Kevin this, but I think he saw an open job that sparked his interest and thought it was the right time to go for a varsity job. He's paid his dues in a great program, has had tremendous success on his level and really had nothing more to accomplish there.

 

LB, I don't know if that answers your original point of why they're "dropping like flies", but that's just my two cents. I know I'll miss seeing those idiots on game day, but I'm happy for all of them. They deserve to be somewhere where they'll be appreciated for the work they do.

Roy coached me for many years. I you letting him go was a huge mistake.

You can guarantee if Roy Daines wasn't currently at Covington Catholic he would have been Kevin's first call to come to Ludlow. Roy is first class and an outstanding baseball coach. Any ideas on the staff he has joining him at Ludlow? Awful late in the year to put a top notch staff together.

As for not having much more to accomplish at the freshmen level you are correct. Correct me if I am wrong but in his 8 years at NCC he won 3 or 4 freshmen titles didn't he? In addition to runnerup and semifinalist finishes?

 

I concur with you in missing them on game days. That staff was one of the best and funniest staffs in baseball. I'm really glad for them to get other opportunities but for selfish reasons I hate to see them go from NCC. Being a Dixie supporter, the freshmen team has had many battles with Kevin's team over the past two seasons, including the 2012 regional championship. Hope that mini "rivalry" continues even in Kevin's absence.

I do not know who is joining him at Ludlow but I know he has reached out to a few different people. It will be difficult for him to put together a staff in just a weeks time but I have no doubt he will get some solid people in there. You have to remember at Ludlow he just has to get atleast one varsity assistant and possibly two JV coaches. There is no freshmen team so he doesn't need to fill those positions.

LB, I can't speak for any of the coaches that left but I will say NCC freshman coaches have always been strict with discipline, demanding hard work and great effort, and held kids accountable for their actions on the field, off the field and in the classroom. When these kids reached JV and Varsity there was definitely a difference where they had a lot more freedom. I kind of compare it to one parent always being strict and the other parent pampering the kids. Now whether that had anything to do with them leaving? Could of played some part in it but only they would know. I know one thing they put a ton of time in on working on the field. They still have one coach that puts a lot of time in taking care of the field and if he leaves that field will go downhill quickly. JMO

I d0 think Coach Daines is a great coach, but that being said, how many Region titles has NCC won since coach Daines left? Give Coach Schulkens his due, they have had great success with him in charge.

And in response to the bolded question, I'm not sure when Coach Daines left and Schulks took over but in the past ten years NCC has won the 2008, 2011 and 2012 regional titles.
