Very entertaining game in Alexandria tonight. Both teams were very competitive and played their tails off.

HHS really controlled the majority of the first half, keeping the lead between 6-10 the entire first half. HHS went into the locker at half up 23-16. Both Coffey and Adler played limited minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. Adler started the second half on the bench as well due to the fouls.

Brossart, being the good team they are, made a run in the third...pushing the offense through Futscher. She took control of the game for about a 4 minute stint in the third and Brossart took a 4 point lead. The Birds battled back and regained the lead by the end of the third...not to look back. It did get interesting down the stretch as the Birds, who are typically very good at late game free throws, left the door open a couple times. Brossart just couldn't convert on a couple key trips.

HHS' defense was rock solid again. Zoie Barth (7th grader) played long key minutes in the first half with Coffey in foul trouble. It's a treat to see a girl her age play with so much composure in big games!

However the story of the night was once again Lydia Graves. Girl is on fire!!! She finishes the game with 23pts and 11 rebounds! Outstanding game from her. She is also playing outstanding defense. Birds always play a team game, but on this night Graves stood out!

I'm always impressed with how hard Brossart plays. The shots that fell in the first game against the Birds didn't go in tonight as often, but man they play hard. They are always a threat as long as there is time on the clock! Futcsher is a great player and I really like her game. But Stadtmiller is the one that always worries me. The Birds did a really nice job on her tonight, be everytime she had the ball late, I felt like she was going to make something happen. She's just one of those players. I also thought Sydney Shannon had a solid outing tonight.

Here's what I have for stats:

Brossart

Futscher 16

Stadtmiller 8

Verst 8

Schultz 5

Shannon 4

Young 2

Eisenman 2

HHS

Graves 23 11 rebs

Coffey 10

Combs 7

Adler 5

Leigh 4

Barth 2

14-9-18-10 HHS

8-8-17-12 Brossart

Completely agree with RCC9. Great intensity on defense was the key for the Birds tonight. Stadtmiller was held in check all night by great defense by the Birds. Ms. Graves is carrying the team offensively the past few games which shows the balance the team has.

On a side note, the 10th region zebras reared their ugly heads but the Birds were able to overcome a few bad calls late, especially a rather quick 5 second call at mid court and a highly suspect 3rd foul on Adler which IMO was an easy jump ball. To be fair, BB had a few questionable calls go against them too, it just seemed as if they were early in the game.

All in all it was a very entertaining game by 2 tenacious squads who no one wants to face in the post season.

Nice win for the Lady Birds. This team is just a blue collar team, they won't wow you but they get things done with defense, taking care of the ball, being in right position, running great half court sets and being very unselfish. They do all the little things good that put them in a position to win games. Very good athletes that understand team which makes them stronger.

That is a great assessment of this team from an outsider. That is exactly what gets them wins.

Fun game to watch, Highlands was up big and Brossart battled back to get the lead. I knew Brossart shot poorly, just didn't realize how bad it was until I found Mr. Graham's report. Graves is a very nice player and I do not believe she came out of the game, if she did it was very briefly. She was sucking wind by the end of Q3 but never once dropped her intensity. Great guard play by Coffey and the young Barth lady. Good seeing some of my old Highlands friends last night. Good luck to the lady birds.

FYI, I sat behind the Highlands bench last night. Coach Richie and staff are entertaining to watch.
