  1. Bobby McManus was a HHS guy from St. Catherine, as was Mark Wendel. I forgot about Mike Mallory...he was a very nice point guard. I got a question: Would Highlands be a downtrodden program if Jake Giesler (Ft. Thomas native) were on the team? We'd probably be in tall cotton! The point being, players make the program. Keep the interest level high in the younger grades and give kids time to develop. Don't focus on playing 5-6 kids and winning a "grade school title"...develop kids and prep 8-9 for the next level.
  2. '76-'77 would be the first year of St. Thomas influence. Jerry Becker & Mark Buten are the only names I can recall that would have been players. Both solid players but it's not like an "all-region" guy transferred in. Now if they closed a year earlier, THAT would have been a different story! Carl Hafele, Matt Giesler, Mike Hardesty would have been nice additions! But they most probably would have gone down to the "school on the hill".
  3. I was there when HHS was 4-23....that was the year before Coach Shields arrived...I think we went something like 23-4 the next season. Coaching had a lot to do with the turn around...but so did the players. Talent can make a coach look smart. Coaching can make average players an excellent team. I've yet to see this years edition, too. We need to arrange a "boys night out"...or would that be an "old guys evening"????
  4. Probably a lock he redshirts...that's how you build!
  5. It will still make them a different team...just because of his size and experience. They still won't be world beaters though, BUT they could be a team that gets overlooked and pulls an upset or two. Last nights game...I wasn't there...did the Birds try to press at all? Sounds like they may need to use defense to create offense. They SHOULD have enough athletes to be effective pressing.
  6. Notre Dame beating Pittsburgh takes a little of the sting out of Cincy's loss there. Maybe the Cats CAN squeak into the Dance.
  7. Wow! 52 years! He keeps this up and he'll catch Charlie Chappie!
  8. Granted! If they could shoot a free throw they would have won the game easily!
  9. Is anyone else pained at watching UC play? They seem to be very uncomfortable running an offense, in-bounding the ball, and lack defensive intensity off the ball. Is it just me?
  10. Congrats to Mike Colosimo! Welcome aboard! I saw Dom Maniello at the UC Banquet. I'll have to check and see about his status. He was a preferred walk-on, as is Adam Dempsey who I know is still on the team.
  11. Plus the Towles v. Pike match up will be "must see" FB. Scouts galore should help ALL the kids!
  12. Why draft a high caliber QB this year? Bengals are 3 yrs. away from being relevant again. Focus on OL/DL in draft and get serviceable QB's as free agents. And PLEEEASE get a back-up who can PUSH Carson Palmer. Lil' brother is NOT NFL caliber. Until the OL improves, Carson will be chuckin' and duckin' to save his skin. Only a matter of time before the injury bug gets him again...and THEN who do play? Jeez!
  13. Congrats Patrick! HHS QB's do well at Nippert!
  14. I didn't see Luke Stein, Highlands 2007, Gardner-Webb. Adam Dempsey, HHS and Dominic Mainello, Beechwood, both 2008 and the QB from Conner 2009, (?) West, are on Univ. of Cincinnati's roster.
  15. Did Allie Conner play? She seems to be the Birds "main spark". By that I mean, with her, the Birds can compete in the 9th region upper echelon...without her, they seem pedestrian. And ANY team Ron Dawn coaches is going to be a tough, scrappy team. Congrats to NCC.
  16. D1 is D1! KY isn't elite enough in FB to turn their nose at ANY D1 kid.
  17. Ben Guidugli...HHS/UC Kiernan ...NCC/UL
  18. I wonder how much Pryor will get for his Sugar Bowl MVP trophy??
  19. Any of those guys make All State first team in football, too?
  20. I gotta give some props to the dreaded Green team of the FTJFL...they got Big Jake Giesler, from NCC, named to the All State 1st team O-line. Hopefully, he'll be on the All State front line for hoops, too!!
  21. Congrats to all...especially Ryan Hahn of Highlands! 4th year in a row a FTJFL Blue team lineman makes All State! Long live the streak!!!
