What Happened to the High School Bands?

I'm in Mississippi and I realized at halftime that it's quite rare to see one much less two high school bands at halftime. I for one enjoy a good marching band. How many schools are still marching ?

The Dixie band had their senior/parent night at the HHS game and put on a rather nice halftime show although I think a 23 minute long halftime is a bit much.

Dixie's band was very good. All the props are a bit much, but unfortunately that seems to be the norm these days.

The bands work VERY hard during the week and then have their own COMPETITIONS on Saturdays. Most only play for home games due to money concerns AND travelling can wear out a band the day before a competition. I agree that the backgrounds for bands have become QUITE EXCESSIVE..but that's what it has come to these days. If you enjoy bands and good sportsmanship (musician-ship?) you really need to check out one of the competitions. The talent of these kids is just as amazing (if not more) than the players on Friday night. Dixie and HHS both have excellent bands!

It used to be that more people came to games at harrison County to watch the band than the football team. The HCHS is not what it used to be and I haven't been to a football game in 3+ years, so I am not sure what the situation is now.

Withrow has a very good , no , excellent band !! Best one I've seen in a long time !

That is what is the case in most of the school districts.

Some bands, at least in this state, choose not to have a marching band based on political reasons (yes, they do exist in the world of marching band ... I did it all four years in high school). And some are just so small (Fort Knox, for example, has fewer than 10 kids in its band) and doesn't compete or perform at halftime for that reason.

 

And for others, it's money issues. They don't have the budget for all the uniforms and instruments, let alone a travel budget.

Taylor County had a very good band last night. Since the Briar Jumpers were leading50-0 at the half last night there wasn't much discussion going on between Somerset's players and coaches. We looked down to the end zone and noticed that most, if not all of the players were really focused on the band.

It wasn't the "Band" (which BTW was VERY VERY good) that they were focused on..:lol:
