  1. If he did not seek out CCH as everyone else wrote, then how did he end up there. Is this Coach L admitting that he needs a little more help this year? I'm not trying to throw fuel on the fire, but what traditionally has been a very fundamentally sound program looks like its running around helter skelter.
  2. [This is probably for another thread but I'll ask anyway. Isn't there an age regulation about starting a season if after your 18th birthday? And yes he's a nice player just curious about the age thing. The only problem I have with him is that he DOES try to do it all himself, and as previously stated in the thread there is a supposed lesser talent around him. Granted Love won POY last year, but there is no sane person who can say that shooting or turning the ball over on 71% of his teams possessions is helpful to the team. THe team is young and very athletic, Schuh and Schroth start also as juniors and could provide for scoring help, but the chance isn't presented because of what I think as a lack of trust. If Villa even wants to contend to make the regional tournament again this year, they will have to start playing more of a team oriented game, where Bryan still gets his 25+ a game because the opposing team will also have to worry about two other scorers and not just Bryan. Try to kill two birds with one stone... When did he turn 18, if it was before the cutoff will he be eligible for an exemption from the 19 year old rule next year? To answer the question, I believe there is a cutoff date and I think its Sept 1. Any student that turns 19 before Sept 1 is not eligible to play in the KHSAA. I will check to sure on the date, but I'm 90% :walk:
  3. SHOCKED by this one... was not there but saw each team earlier in the year and thought NCC would have won easily.. Congrats to the Cats
  4. I'm surprized to see another 9th Region school with such a low point total. It looks like we may need to get several schools in for 6am shooting practice. Kudos to Scott for their defensive effort.
  5. I think this was covered pretty accurately in a previous thread about a kid a Holmes. I'll weigh in again (if anyone cares). In schools such as Holmes (where grades 8-12 are on the same campus) and Beechwood (7-12 are HS grades), I have no problem with pulling a kid up to play at the JV or Varsity level. These students go to school with each other on a daily basis, eat with each other and are even in some of the same classes. Because they report to the same school office/principal/athletic director, they are held to the same standards. Conversely, I have a problem with going to feeder schools to get players. If you don't have the horses to field a Freshman team this year, scrap it. I watched the Dayton/Newport Girls play earlier this year and was appalled to see the starting five Freshman start the JV and play significant minutes int he Varsity. What was bad at 4:30 was horrible (and exhausted) at 7:30. Most of the Frosh coaches don't schedule games until the fall coaches meeting anyway. If you have to go to a middle school, you're disrupting the following (in my order of importance) 1. that student's academic routine as set by teachers in that school; 2. that sudent's social routine with the friends their own age; 3.that student's athletic development. Let me break it down. 1. Teachers often set goals and assignments based on activities. If, for example, a sixth grade teacher at Turkeyfoot knows that the team plays every Wed. night, that teacher may lighten the load a bit, or may choose not to schedule tests for Thursdays. However if a student is playing at Dixie, no consideration can be made. This becomes especially important when the team may travel even just a short distance to Holy Cross and the bus doesn't even get back to school until 9:30 or 10. 2. Any student can be enrolled in school, go to all their classes, make good grades and not get any social benefit from being there. It is overly important for kids to be allowed to mature before getting to the HS level. By pulling kids up too soon, you'd be both putting them in with an older group that they may not be ready for and pulling them away from the friends that they are going to spend the next 5 6 or 7 years with. Those bonds cannot always be rebuilt. 3. By pulling these kids up too soon, I think you put them on a pedastal too early. The best kids in 12th grade are normally the ones who had to work to get there. The ones that were great early tend to fall off at the end because they don't continue to work to get better.:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:
  6. It's a shame to talk about such a good game... Then to dwell on how fast the gym shuts down afterward...
  7. Holmes -- big enough that I'm going to the CCH/BW game.
  8. I'm all for keeping telnt close to home. Now we just have to get coahes out and get these boys to UK, UL, UC or X for college...
  9. Close to the wire -- not pretty. A defensive game with high pressure throughout.
  10. Saw Holmes in early December and looks bad for this year... It still amazes me that a school of that size can't turn out at least 5 girls with a little more athletic ability. It looks like all their emphasis is on the Men's team. Are there girls at Holmes who could but aren't playing for other reasons or is that really all they can muster?
  11. I agree that turnovers and attitude will be the difference in this game. If CCH guards continue to turn the ball over, it will not be a contest. However, I'm not sure why they're hanging heads during the game. I thought Couch L would have nipped that already... I know Coach Schumate won't let that happen on his squad, and with a rivalry this big and a real shot at it this year, look for BW to come out with everything but the kitchen sink... BW by 8 :jump:
  12. Dayton is a scrappy and quick team. Congrats to coach for reigning in a few egos and getting the team ready for a season...
  13. Coach Trame used to chart games, and I know he taught this to Coach Goetz... Forgive me if the numbers are a bit wrong... During the 1991 State run, he figured that there were an average of 30 posessions each per game, each taking just over a minute in the half court set. He wanted a stop on about a third of them, resulting in a 20 possession, 45 point game. He figured on about 55 points to win. I was not at the game, but from the description, it sounds like the average time of posession may have been 1:30+. This mathmatically reduces the number of posessions to 21 and with the defense: no three point fg's and potential stops and turnovers, you could pheasably reduce the number of SCORING POSSESSIONS to 15. So a 30 point game give or take is not out of the question. I'd rather be at a 28 point nailbiter than a 40 point blowout anytime.... :thumb:
  14. Don't look for too many drastic chenges this year. Coach L needs to start him with the JV and Freshman to improve whats coming. I look for drastic changes next year....
  15. I'd look for someone who is level headed enough to respect the GAME. Immediately after that, someone fitting Mike's description of a coach. With those qualities, you will have a winning program. That being said, we need to remember that a HIGH SCHOOL coach's job is so much more than on court. Most of the players that a coach impacts will not go on to play at the next level, but need the lessons to reapply later in life. I need a coach that reinforces, both in word and action, the "right" way to do things. This may mean, but not be limited to, the way he handles practices and games, players and officials, adversity within the team, dissention, grades, attentiveness, attendance, etc... I see too many studs come off the hardwood and/or field at schools where they've been led along by the halter and fail miserably because they were not made accountable because of their athletic ability. I guess I'm saying the coach would have to be a ROLE MODEL above all else.
  16. Highlands / Cov Cath is really the rivalry that spans multiple sports. Nothing beats the feeling of a Holy Cross / Holmes in the small Latonia confines.
  17. I agree that Trame is the forst name that comes to mind with Holy Cross. But I throw up Eifert as a close second. I also think of Fausz at St Henry and Dawn at Newcath. Maybe not the best to ever come from the school, but definately some of the class acts. :thumb:
  18. I'd still like to bring back Scott, SK, Brossart and Campbell to the 9th. What is the problem with the schools out west that they keep consolidating. Not to imply a problem with the kids or people, but have those counties lost that much population or income base, that they have to combine schools?
  19. The only two single sex schhols are Covington Catholic and Notre Dame.
  20. It all boils down to the almighty $$$ -- If what you're looking for is an education, go to school for school and play baseball to get the money. If you're looking to get drafted and are not concerned with finishing school, then go to the JUCO. Heck, your brother may get drafted high enough to make this a moot point. If he's offered a $2 mil signing bonus, then why not take it? College will be a whole lot easier later on when money is not an issue...
  21. I still like to see local competition. District games always carry a little more weight in the regular season...
  22. I would think all schools would try to make sure that EVERY team is supported. If I were the AD or Principle, I'd move the Bball game too.
  23. Great publicity for a small school -- Why can't we just get that kind of work from the Cincinnati paper?
  24. If you're referring to the problem of not enough players to fill a team, I'll address it. I think the lack of participation at Dixie, as well as a host of other schools is indicative of other problems. I still remember seeing parents and families for EVERY CHILD ON THE BENCH, EVERY NIGHT. Now you're hard pressed to find 10 parents there at some schools. Last night I watched the Newport / Dayton Girls. AT NEWPORT. Dayton brought nearly 100 fans, mostly adults. Newport turned out about 30 students. I realize that #1 this is a boy's thread and that #2 boys typically carry a greater following, but where is the participation. However, I've been to plenty of Dixie games and seen the sold out gym... I've also been to plenty where there were more dust bunnies on the floor than fans in the seats. If parents aren't going to involve themselves with their child's interests, don't expect to see them in tryouts in the fall. I also attribute a lot of this to increased AAU expectations. Kids that may develop later are learning early that they will not have the H.S. sports experience that they want. They may have an off the wall coach with little or no formal training or may have one that thinks Bob Kinght had the right approach (I've seen both). Some lack the confidence to be a third string player and some just don't have the work ehtic to deal with it... I put it back to the parents. Take the time to develop your kids, not just their game -- then support it till the bitter end.
