  1. I'd like to see the girls play first on most nights. I agree that the boys get more fans and it ends up benefitting the girls more to have them at the end of the game.
  2. Disappointed to see the low 2nd half scoring out of HC... Can't wait to see this district played out
  3. You've got to be kidding me ... what about the reading of the newspapers while the pponants cheerleaders are on the floor for a timeout. Are we really so over conscious about feeling good that we have to take away the fun in the stands?:ohbrother:
  4. The bigger floor may also benefit teams without the depth. The extra space prevents at least 3-4 fouls per game that come from congestion.
  5. This is a new one on me... I think the KHSAA would rule that no school has a right to ban a student from another team from participating in the contest. In the event of a legal situation, and it would be VERY RARE, I'd imagine that the contest would be moved to another site. It would then, be a shame to lose a district home game due to shortsightedness on the part of game management. A few questions: 1 - How long ago did the deputy "ban" him? 2- Why? 3- If this is truly the case -- has it been brought to the attention of the coaches involved and then why did thy schedule the game there ?
  6. The most obvious example is a designed timeout. Everyone knows its coming so the official glances up and sees 3 seconds run off?? Absolutely put the time back on.
  7. Acutally, the rule is that you cannot have an 8th grader and a Junior on the field at the same time. This could also apply to JV contests.
  8. What a turnaround by Beechwood. Unfortuantely, I don't think it's just this year for Bellevue.
  9. Defiantely a shocker that it ended up this lopsided.....
  10. The only way an official can put time on (or take time off) is if he has definite knowledge of what the time is supposed to be. Most (or I'd like to think most) varsity officials should be trained well enough that when a partner blows the whistle, they immediately glance at the clock. Of course there are exceptions, like if in a jump ball situation or a heated play where they cannot take eyes off the floor. But I digress. If the official has definit knowledge that the whistle blew at 59.6 seconds because he looked at the clock, the clock can be reset. Conversely, lets assume that there is a bckcourt count and he clock fails to start. Either official blows the whistle because there is no pressure and tells the scorer to reduce the time by 8 seconds because that is what he has counted off. This is why not only should the official scorers be trained by the state, but each school should be required to send their time keepers to the state camp. :dancingpa
  11. I think we're way too worried about how a player feels... The best I've ever seen was the fans keeping quiet until the opp's shooter had the ball then screaming like mad. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen it since the Houston's at H.C..
  12. I'd think it was a forfeit, and I've already seen in other sports where coaches have been "suspended from all events for life" for doing far less...
  13. Two of trhe dirties of all time -- the Scott Casey rule at HC and the Nose Ball.. Scott Casey from the early eighties, had a knack for making opponents eat the pads whenever they shot a layup.. The nose ball came into play when college started calling the elbow swinging violation. Many coaches started teaching players not to swing elbows but to use the ball. I guess they think that the "striking" offense is less obvious with the ball.
  14. This has been already covered in multiple revious threads, but I'll weigh in anyway... For the sake of argument, let's assume that either the girl in question IS that good or the program is that bad where a seventh or eight grader will play varsity. Point: In a school such as Beechwood or Holmes where the High School extends below 9th grade ( 7th at BW and 8th at HHS), I have no problem with those students who are in that high school playing on Freshmen, JV or Varsity teams. In other schools, where the middle school is offsite or totally separate on another part of the campus (ie Connor or Ryle), I am absolutely against it. Here is my reasoning: 1)Social Ramifications: By allowing a student up to 6 years younger than the senior class, who doesn't deal with older kids on the same scale, to spend significant time with older students, you've exposed the younger to things they may not or should not be ready for. We all know that things happen in the high school setting that do not in Jr High. Additionally, you're taking time away from the younger's normal social development with friends ther own age. It is hard enought to make it when you spend the normal extra curricular hours with your peers, but when you change that to travel to another team right after school, its a stress these youngsters do not need. Finally (on this point) the younger student may (will) face increased resentment from the other Frosh / Soph / Juniors that she will pass up. This will not help with normal social interaction once that child reached high school. 2) Academic Problems: While it is not practice in most schools to give homework breaks for big games, students are expected to have developed the necessary study skills to handle the job. An eight grader at Turkeyfoot may not have the teacher's understanding when Dixie travells to Pendleton County for a game that night. In fact, if the students are travelling together, The younger cannot even work with the traditional athlete as they have differring work. Most middle school teams do not travel as far as high school teams. 3) Physical Problems: Especially with girls, teen athletes' bodies are being taxed too much already. It is a shame to see the number of girls on the floor each night with ankle braces, knee problems and shin splints. Allowing young women to wait another year or two before enduring the more stressful routines will allow their bone and joint structures to catch up with the (typical) weight gain from puberty. It has been written over and over that over involvement at younger ages is leading to these chornic injuries in young women. I welcome any other opinions, but this is why I feel the way I do.:thumb:
  15. I agree that it seems the school systems are VERY QUICK to cancel school due to morning weather. It's almost like they no longer believe in the two hour delay... When I was there, there were NO SPORTS on a day school was cancelled and ABSOLUTELY NONE if you missed a certain percentage of the day. Additionally, if you had a game the night before and then missed a half day following-- you'd be lucky not to be suspended by the dean for the next game.
  16. But you're right, it will create havoc with the small schools..
  17. The KHSAA won't go to the blind draw until it has successfully eliminates all three team districts. With the consolidation in Regions 1 2 & 3, it won't be any time soon.
  18. What does that leave open for Boone's next opponents?
  19. While the manufacuter may state the brace is "legal" for competitive sports, it may not be legal for "contact" sports. when questioning a brace's legality, it will come down to the officials' judgement of if it is #1 safe for that player and #2 (no less important) safe for the other players in the contest. Ask yourself, "If a player wearing that brace dives in on a loose ball and smacks another kid with the brace, what kind of damage will it do?" That is where the "hard and unyielding" comes into play.
  20. A certain amount IS COACHED, others are learned from example.
  21. I'm not saying it's the best situation, nor do I know how to police it... But I do feel that team sports and physical education is very important and would like to see every kid get a chance to play... How do they police the unaffiliated Christian League when they send a team or two to play Calvary and/or Latin?
  22. I've noticed a drastic lack of attendance at the 4 or 5 games I've made. In the past, it seems the gym sold out no matter whom the opponant was.
  23. It has to be a disppointment in Park Hills. It's even more disappointing to see the perennial fan base turn their backs on the boys.
  24. Several years ago, they tried to make it an intentional foul if the coach yelled "FOUL" to get the team to foul at the end of a game. It has been amended to instruct that is is accepted that a team will foul at the end of a game to stop the clock / get the ball back. If you watch closely, you will see most officials instructing players to "be smart" with their fouls in this situation, as it is very easy to let one get away from you and get the intentional.:idunno:
