nWo Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 If you know of any games that are canceled due to the upcoming winter storm please post them in this thread.
PurplePride92 Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 My son just told me the JV/Varsity game of Washington County @ Boyle County for tonight 1/26/09 is canceled and the JV has practice at 12:30.
PurplePride92 Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 ^ The varsity game is still on between Washington County @ Boyle County. The JV game was canceled and the varsity will play at 6pm. Sorry for the confusion if there was any.
Theoldguy Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Getting on top of my soapbox.... I know my comment really doesn't belong here, but it bugs the heck out of me when schools close down due to the weather, but they still play their games. A fine example is tonight game at Boone County against CovCath. Boone, along with Kenton and Campbell Counties canceled school today although I can't honestly think of why! My guess is that school will be canceled both on Tuesday and Wednesday (and for good reason), but by darn you can't stop the ball games. What kind of message are we sending to kids today, that the games are more important than their education! Seems such a waste of taxpayers money! Getting off my soapbox....
bioteacher Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I agree...if school is canceled all games should be too!
flyin'intheflag Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I agree...if school is canceled all games should be too! Why do we still play sports in Kentucky when school is cancelled do to a weather delay? School is cancelled because of the silly way that Kentucky funds public education. You get money based on the number of kids that are at school each day not on the number of students enrolled. If the buses don't run on all the roads and your attendance drops below 90% then you lose tons of money! The games are also played because of financial consideration. A high school sports program depends on gate receipts to pay the bills. No game...no money...simple as that. Those that can make it to the game assume the risk. You also have a contract between the two teams to play the game with financial considerations involved for forfeits. You can always tack the day missed from school at the end of the calendar but you can't always find an agreeable make-up date. Most games that are played on "snow days" are on the ones where most people living in the world of asphalt are wondering why school was cancelled to begin with. Strange enough, sometimes the crowds are better on snow days because mom and dad can't wait to get the kids out of the house!

But no where did you mention the loss of kids receiving their education today, and please understand that the missed days will be made up at the end of the school year, when the students will sit in the classroom without books or a teacher teaching them. So you are saying that a game is more important than a education! BTW not tonight at Boone County.....

Theoldguy Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I believe you may be selling the education system a bit short here! Not at all! Have had friends who were teachers tell me that the snow make up days were just a waste of education, due to the fact that grades were in already, books were taken back and the only thing they did was show a movie or read the paper. I am told that some schools extended the day 5 or more minutes to make up the missed time, when that happens I ask when did Billy or Mary get their extra time for Math or English..... Now understand there are good reasons for missing school on day's like this Tuesday and Wednesday, but so many days are missed now days and how many ball games are canceled?
mcpapa Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I agree...if school is canceled all games should be too! It has been my experience that many times the roads are not fit to drive on in the early morning hours, but are much better in the evening. Like today.
SportsFan62 Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I know some private schools at least include a couple extra days in case of off days. With this being said, private schools are not off as much as public schools are, but if they have the extra days already in the schedule, the opposing team was at school, and the roads are fine by game time, why not have the game?
alwayswrong Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 It has been my experience that many times the roads are not fit to drive on in the early morning hours, but are much better in the evening. Like today. I agree that it seems the school systems are VERY QUICK to cancel school due to morning weather. It's almost like they no longer believe in the two hour delay... When I was there, there were NO SPORTS on a day school was cancelled and ABSOLUTELY NONE if you missed a certain percentage of the day. Additionally, if you had a game the night before and then missed a half day following-- you'd be lucky not to be suspended by the dean for the next game.
d-dawg Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 It has been my experience that many times the roads are not fit to drive on in the early morning hours, but are much better in the evening. Like today. Makes sense!
