einstein Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I was recently attending a high school basketball game where the visiting team student cheering section begin yelling "air ball" each time a certain player touched the ball. I watched as the opposing team's administration addressed the student section claiming it was extrememly poor sportsmanship. It eventually became somewhat of a heated event because of the strong reaction. I'm curious if most people agree that yelling "air ball" at a certain player is that big of deal anymore and does it really consititute poor sportsamnship?
Clyde Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 If a player can't handle the opposing student body yelling "air ball" or if the fans cannot, I'd suggest golf or tennis.
True blue (and gold) Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 The school adminstration has the right to restrict their student section's behavior if they deem that it reflects poorly on their school. I wish more schools would do this. I attend some games where the student sections spends 99% of the time downing the other team and almost no energy put into to supporting their own team. These are not fans...they are hecklers.

Clyde Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 A few years ago when Drew Ellison was the qb at CCH his name was "mentioned" by the HHS student section. A CCH basketballer made a bad pass and the HHS cheering section broke out the "just like Ellison" cheer. I thought it was funny and quite acceptable. I think Drew even chuckled. Is that over the line?

madman Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 If your team is losing, the cheering section can't chant "air ball" because the winning section will respond by chanting "scoreboard"! I don't see any of this as a big deal. I've been to alot of games where the cheering sections exchange chants and they are actually having a good time. The "Crazies" at Cov. Cath. are the best that I have seen at a high school game. A spirited cheering section creates a great atmosphere.
ky hoopster Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Been going on for years!!!!!!!! People are to worried about what everyone else is doing and they ought to be watching the game!!!!!!!!!! For centuries people have been making fun of each other, picking on the quite/weak, laughing at people when they fall, heckling them at ballgames, beating them by 50, etc. etc. I survived all these HUMAN traits and it didnt hurt me any!!!!!!!!! If you cant stand to lose....by whatever margin large or small don't play the game because at some point you will!! The game of real life is not fair and never will be!! Why try to shelter kids and let them think it is!! Can't stand the heat...get out the kitchen!!!!!!!!!!:taz::taz::taz:
alwayswrong Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I think we're way too worried about how a player feels... The best I've ever seen was the fans keeping quiet until the opp's shooter had the ball then screaming like mad. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen it since the Houston's at H.C..

Do you mean during a free throw?
mcpapa Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Bit of trivia: the "air ball" chant almost invariably begins on the F above middle C.

It was my understanding that the administrators from the school whose fans were chanting, did not consider the incident to be poor sportsmanship so they were simply watching the game..
