In this case, it was the opposing team administration who addressed the fans. As expected, that did not go over that well. Both administrations were present. It was my understanding that the administrators from the school whose fans were chanting, did not consider the incident to be poor sportsmanship so they were simply watching the game..

 

I didn't read that closely enough. This seems over the line to me, if they were only yelling "airball." I would have no problem with them curbing profanity of any nature by whomever.

 

I do want to ask again...is it poor sportsmanship for a "fan" section to spend 99% of the time downing the other team and almost no time supporting their own team?

I love huge cheering sections. It's nice to see a big group of kids rooting for their team. I have only ever witnessed where some student body may have crossed the line. I was at LCA watching a game and their student body actually stands on the floor. I think this is hazardous for basketball players. They were inches from the outbounds. When kids were trying to take the ball out kids were literally in their ear screaming. At one point a kids lost control and slammed into a whole group of fans on the floor screaming and putting their hands on him. I really think that is a bit much. However a little heckling and cheering is always fun to watch. It's nice to see a student body come out and support their team.

OK, this has been fun and entertaining (where you at Dawg - I kept looking for another Air ball, Air ball, Air ball post...:ylsuper:) BUT seriously now...who cares? Do you really care what the opposing section chants? Do you really think it has much impact on the game? Any player who can't handle a student cheering section isn't tough enough to be on the floor. Sure, there are limits (Air ball, Air ball, Air ball is definitely within the limits). As long as the students and fans are not making personal attacks and/or profane, let them have their fun.

I attended the East/Rowan game last night and noticed a severe lack of enthusiasm from the crowd. The only one I can remember being vocal was a Rowan County Fan not happy with the officiating. This is in steep contrast to what East will face tonight at Elliott County where the crowd is always enthusiastic. That game will be worth the price just to see the crowd.

I was the president of my school's pep club for my Junior and Senior years. I played football so I wasn't able to ever pass the buck on to someone else for the football games, so we focused on Basketball my Junior year.

 

I wasn't able to play my Senior season due to a torn labrum, so I focused all of my efforts on going to each and every football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball game I could and attempted to even get a pep section at the sports that usually didn't have pep sections (Softball, Baseball and Volleyball). We had a pretty strong turnout for Basketball and I was always looking up different chants and things for our pep section to recite. I would use a lot of UCLA's pep-section chants and things like that, but I never tolerated making a personal attack on a player from the other team. We always had 50+ kids in the section and I think our teams fed off that energy that resonated from the pep section. Our boys team won a school record 26 my senior season, was the favorite to win our region-but we lost in the first round of the district tournament.

 

But my point is: I find no problem shouting things like "air ball" or even the thing about Drew Ellison, we never got so personal that we got in trouble and we never shouted obsecenitites. An effective pep section is one that displays school spirit and gets under the opposing team's skin but doing it in a way that offends none of the other team's players or fans.

If you can't handle air ball, life is probably going to be tough in general.

student section cheers are always going to be a part of basketball so players are going to have to deal with it.

Bit of trivia: the "air ball" chant almost invariably begins on the F above middle C.

I have noticed this year students bringing white boards to the games and the message changing the entire game. Students are very creative. It is part of the game.

I just don't like when student sections "over cheer" the opponents girl cheerleaders. I think it's classless. Other than that...have at it!

That and when the opponents band starts playing just when the cheerleaders hit the floor. CLASSLESS!!

Most players will tell you they do not hear the fans during the game. They hear each other (pick, switch, etc.) and no matter how loud the gym is they can hear their coach.

I guess I care because I am a teacher. I don't consider this "fan" behavior. Fans cheer on their team. When all you are doing is dogging the other team and spend no energy cheering your own team on, I think it's tasteless and certainly not SCHOOL spirit.

:lol: Not really. I just come from a school that has a student section that is lively and positive. They sang the school song at a game recently. Our school has set standards on positive behavior and school pride and it carries over into our fan section without ever having to say a word to them.
