Question
I agree. You cannot fault a defender who, in this scenario, may not even know that the opponant is cominng at him. The original question posed said that the defender was just standing there...

Defiantely. If Coach can lend years of experience to the youngsters, they'll be fine.. Looking at HC and CCH, they may have a region berth this year.

Per the KHSAA Officials' Guidebook: "$50 per official for a two man crew, $40 per official for a three man crew" Each region is alotted different amounts by their own Board of Control, but I don't think the $20 difference is going to bankrupt a program. As for coverage areas, please review the documents at: http://www.intra-focus.com/taso/DOCS/2009-10ThreePersonMechanics.pdf These are a couple years old but with minor exceptions are correct.

Freshman refs where do they get these guys?
[(QUOTE=SKINPIG;3653958]1) But yes, the JV games I officiate move in a timely, fairly called and smooth manner because that's the way I want it to be. 2) I am not a member of the "Region" association but I am a member of our local association and am in very good standing. QUOTE] -- "Because that's the way I want it to be..." So -- say a GJV game somes along and there are more fouls comitted than the hour and fifteen minutes of alloted time allows. Do you start passing on fouls? Do you not allow each team five timeouts? How do you control the duration of the game without deviating from the rules? --What is the difference between a local association and a region association? To the best of my knowledge, assignors are provided to each association by the Board of Control. And there is only one association for each sport in each area. I may be wrong, enlighten me.

That is exactly why they should be all worked as a three. So that every referee has the same comfort factor with the game.

You're absolutely right. Sometimes the best angle is from up top. That doesn't change the lack of respect that most of this thread has shown for beginning officials.

If you want to get ultimate consistency out of officials, go to your Athletic Director and ask why EVERY VARSITY GAME IS NOT A THREE MAN. That is the Home Team's choice. If you want officials to be absolutely consistant in the three man system, they need to work it every night, not once a month. If you don't understand the coverage areas for either the three or two man system, then don't assume you know whose call it should be. ATM, as always -- you've been the voice of enlightenment in the storm.

Question
Great analogy. I agree that you should no penalize the defensive player if he is still. Hw is entitled to his position on the floor.

Freshman refs where do they get these guys?
1) Are you seriously stating that, as an official you're worried about the duration of a game? How can you change your focus from a JV to a V or any other game? I agree that there is a movement within all HS sports to avoid the ticky tac, but not in order to speed up the game... You may want to reevaluate your officiating priorities. 2) In order to receive JV assignments in KY, you must be liscenced by the state and a member in good standing of your local association. If you're telling me that you are taking these assignments outside the normal means, you may be jeopordizing your liabiliyt insurance through NFHS as well and the schools'.

You are correct. Mechanics and confidence make every call easier to sell to the crowd. Knowledge and application make them an easy sell to the coach. These are skill that take time to develop. :thumb:

Newport Wildcats offensive machine
Not to discredit two large margin victories, but is anything really proven by thumping Villa or SCPA (Cincy)??? I remember Holy Cross going to Maysvill St Pats in '92 and throwing up 106 but they were never proclaimed and "offensive juggernaut". I'll wait to see the offensive power against a few of the better programs. Holmes is a start, but Bryan Station and NCC will help prove (or disprove) your point.

I never advocate calling out a referee by name. If you see an official at a Frosh or JV game, you know that he is there because of where the coaches' rated him the year before. That being said, you will find several excellent officials working at the JV level. You will also find those that will never make it to the top 40. Take it for what it is. Each official is giving it everything they have from the start. Meetings and clinics in the offseason, hopefully some preparatory physical training, and countless hours of study (rules). If you're at one of these games and see an official having a hard time, I feel your pain, but try to look at it from the other perspective.:thumb:

What is the problem with 40 fouls? :idunno: 40 fouls just puts each team in the Double Bonus each half. 50 is a lot, but in a close game you'll get that easy as one team tries to stop the clock. I've noticed a move away from fundamental defense in the last three years. As this occurs, get ready to see foul counts increase. Especially when a defender faces a more athletic opponent.

From the NFHSBasketball 2009-10 Points of Emphasis for Referees: "Travelling. The travelling rule has not changed; however, the comitee is still concerned that the rule is not being properly enforced. Consequently, offensive players are gaining a tremendous advantage. Areas of specific concern are: the spin move, the step-through move, the jump stop, perimeter shooters taking an extra "hop" prior to releasing the try and ball handlers lifting the pivot foot prior to releasing the ball for the dribble...." If you need any other information, it is available at KHSAA.org.:walk::walk:

Campbell County Basketball
Youth programs are by far the key to developing your Varsity talent. I credit theyouth program (or lack thereof) at Holy Cross with most of their present situation. The only difference is that there, a buch of kids that were playing basketball until the start of school are now playing football in tha fall. For small schools it is a major problem. Brossart has come thru remarkably in their athletic expansion, maintaining both soccer and basketball. As you've mentioned, the key is the youth program. Kids that are taught fundamentals and exposed to competition repeatedly fare better than others. I don't know why coaches in general don't understand this.
