I was at the Sk vs Cooper game Thursday night. The game was called so bad. Both of them was grads from SK and you could tell! One of them was taking the money at the door so im told. I think they need to do something about some of them. Not to say Cooper would have won but it would be nice to see them play a fair game.

First year refs are assigned frosh and jv games. Most people assume that first year refs are always middle school refs. Since there is no association for middle school athletics, when one is hired and licensed, they do frosh and jv games. The guidelines are much looser and there is not much accountability because their goal is to grow as an official until they can do varsity games. That is why you will see officials with ten years experience that are still doing frosh and jv games. They have yet to improve to the varsity level.

I would hate to be that ten year ref still doing frosh and jv.:puke:

And I am sure the game play was not at a very high level either. Come on, people have to start somewhere and they did get a fair game unless they were just bad for one team. If they were bad all around then sorry to say it was fair! :thumb:

I agree, its a very tough job, but it is a job. These guys are getting paid, I don't think its asking to much for them to be good or better at their job.

I love this response. These guys aren't volunteers. They get paid!! When you get paid it's called a job. They choose to do it on their own accord. With any "job" there should be a drive to do that job well. Ever heard of pride?? When an adult is doing a paid job poorly, he or she should expect repercussions. Like any walk in life there is good and bad. I tip my hat to the good officials who take pride in what they do. Who love the game and have a passion for it. However I will also chastise those who show up for the payday and really don't care how they perform. I will complain about them, and no I will not grab a whistle. Why? I choose not too that's why..

I once called Rumpke and complained because the garbage collectors spilled some of the garbage on my sidewalk and left it. I considered that a poor effort. Does the fact that I don't want to be a garbge collector mean I have no right to complain about that??

There is a lot of reasons you may be a 10 year frosh/jv official and yes talent may be one factor. In the past to become a varsity official you had to take a week off work and go do some games during the summer at camps, and sometimes this was not possible. Also in the past it was a little bit of who you knew not sure how it is today.

SO, SO, SO, right! Even at middle school people expect NBA officiating and complain because they have to pay to get in! If, I can get a certified official at a middle school game I am happy! :clap:

Fangman was calling the Highlands Frosh game the other day and I thought he did a very nice job. He let the game play out and didnt call a bunch of ticky tacky fouls. The other guy with him missed a ton of traveling calls on both sides, mainly when HC had the ball. I know Fangman has always done a lot of AAU games at SOAS and been pretty good.

I was at that game too! All calls where against Cooper. Some of the worst I have ever seen.

How do you know they are not good? The problem could be that those complaining really have no idea what they are talking about or it is simply your judgement is different from that of the officials. Why is a spectators judgement more correct or right than the officials?
