There is an old saying that you get what you pay for! In our area, there is not a lot of people that come to watch freshmen games and middle schools do not have very expensive admissions so as to allow parents and students to be able to come to watch the games. Therefore, most schools can't afford to go out and get the kind of experienced and certified officials that are assigned to Varsity games. There are just not a lot of people that are willing to get ridiculed (and often cursed at) for low pay. I am glad when the officials that we have at our games are at least consistent, whether they are good or bad. It at least gives our players a chance to adapt to the flow of the game.

First, we all know that you will not get Varsity caliber officials at most Freshman games. These games are used typically for training inexperienced officials to help them reach the next level.

 

Second, IF the two officials working the game in question were indeed recent SK alumni AND are KHSAA certified, they are in violation of the code as outilined in the KHSAA Officials Guidebook, (p6) Conclict of Interest, I, e&f.

 

If the school knowingly scheduled the officials in violation, they could be responsible as well. If the officials were not KHSAA certified, the school is at fault.

I love this response. These guys aren't volunteers. They get paid!! When you get paid it's called a job. They choose to do it on their own accord. With any "job" there should be a drive to do that job well. Ever heard of pride?? When an adult is doing a paid job poorly, he or she should expect repercussions. Like any walk in life there is good and bad. I tip my hat to the good officials who take pride in what they do. Who love the game and have a passion for it. However I will also chastise those who show up for the payday and really don't care how they perform. I will complain about them, and no I will not grab a whistle. Why? I choose not too that's why..

Fangman was calling the Highlands Frosh game the other day and I thought he did a very nice job. He let the game play out and didnt call a bunch of ticky tacky fouls. The other guy with him missed a ton of traveling calls on both sides, mainly when HC had the ball. I know Fangman has always done a lot of AAU games at SOAS and been pretty good.

 

Fangman also did the Silver Grove/Dayton JV game Saturday and I'm pretty sure he needed a new whistle after the game. Called a lot of ticky tack fouls. Just shows how things can change from game to game.

Aren't all high school officials assigned thru the assigner, freshman and up?

So I guess if you don't like a meal at a restaurant, you should ask for an application and begin a career as a cook?

 

I agree, its a very tough job, but it is a job. These guys are getting paid, I don't think its asking to much for them to be good or better at their job.

 

Thats exactly why they are out there working those games to begin with. They are trying to get better (Most anyway). I always tell my freshman, JV and middle school coaches to be patient and make sure if you know a rule is broken to let the assigner know. Even let the officials know, in the proper way, if they are open to listening to you. If you record your games make an extra copy and send it in to the assigner. I have found this helps as well.

Well it was Highlands playing and we are a football school so maybe he just thought he would let the physicality go because that is normal for the Birds. LOL

If you see an official at a Frosh or JV game, you know that he is there because of where the coaches' rated him the year before. That being said, you will find several excellent officials working at the JV level. You will also find those that will never make it to the top 40.

 

Take it for what it is. Each official is giving it everything they have from the start. Meetings and clinics in the offseason, hopefully some preparatory physical training, and countless hours of study (rules).

I agree, I don't like naming an official by name. Basketball is a high speed game and things get missed. And often times what fans think are a foul are not, a lot of it can be subjective. Human error is part of the game. It goes both ways. Part of being a player and a coach is recognizing how an official calls a game and adjusting to it. It happens in Middle School, High School, College, and Pro's.
