Unless I missed it, noone mentioned anything about the 8th region. You can't overlook Gallain County and the success they have had. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Owen County will be back in Class A with wealth of talent. Both of these programs have great coaches and could make a run.

Why do so many schools continue to plant bermuda? I can understand that it will fill in well while it is growing hardily, but is it even recommended in the zones it is being planted. Perhaps if global warming would only speed up. I'm interested in the product Scott's is advertising that produces side shoots and stays green most of the year round. I'm more curious on how it will work in my lawn than as a field grass, but it could be a possibility for athletic complexes in this area.

Are you allowed to step out of the box to take a sign? I thought you had to stay in the box in high school.

I agree with the scar tissue comment. I had mine done two years ago June. Depending upon the degree of the tear, it can be a long recovery process. I continue to do my PT long after release. My best words of advice are lots and lots of stretching and continued shoulder strengthening. I was told you could expect consistent pain for up to one year and not return to full strength until at least two years out.

Lone Oak does have two potential first team all staters returning in Brown and Jeff Prescott. Coach Haskins has done no less than an amazing job with this program and you would expect him to continue to develop talent and place highly competitive teams on the field.

Comparing Owen to St. X and T isn't the same, but Highlands doesn't have much of a different enrollment. In fact, if the KHSAA went to the top enrolled 16 schools in 6A and the lowest in 1A, Owen and Highlands would probably be in the same district in 3A (see thread on new alignment). There aren't summer league programs like AAU or select baseball in Owen. Is there evern a summer league baseball for high school aged boys? How many of Owen County players participate in that sort of summer program? Then, how many of the 30 or so boys that didn't participate in those programs were in summer workouts? Is this even a question of dedication or support from the community? What has to be taken into account is that Owen is a big land mass with a small, spread out population. Kids live a ways away from school. On top of that, most adults have to commute to work. Therefore, in some cases, there is no one there to take them to workouts during the day. Maybe the issue isn't dedication, perhaps it's logistics? The same situation could be why the numbers increase for upper classmen, because once they get their liscense, they can make the practices, assuming they make their workouts. I'm not sure how much a coach's football knowledge has to do with these kinds of issues.

From the late 80's in West Kentucky: Al Baker from Trigg County. Guy looked like he was wearing full pads when he would go out for pre-game in jersey and helmet. I think he went to UK, then maybe a knee? Ronnie Moss from Crittenden County. Evasive runner with major league speed. I think we was also a knee. There were some hoss linemen from Heath around then as well. Monty Brown and Shane King, don't know what became of them.

Owen County will win their first District championship since joining the 31st. Coach Devin Duvall has the Rebels playing solid basketball at the right time of year. There should be three excellent high school basketball games this week.

Kids usually 'get up' for these kind of games as well. Would be a good way to get them used to playing a big game with a larger crowd.

The same could be said for the 6A's. You have Henderson and Daviess west then Central Kentucky. You don't have equal representations from each of the regions, but I don't think Fulton County or Fulton City would be complaining about bypassing Mayfield and getting to play for a state championship. Look at the list using the "little" A and the "super" 6 and you'll see some teams that were some of the weakest A and AA schools in the state under the 4 class system in with some of the best AAA schools in the "new" 3A and 4A. I'm sure that's going to be pretty. Anyway, a system needs to be set into place and people are just going to have to deal with it. There will always be some unhappy people, no matter what.

That's a good question? I always thought intentials where meant to be called if a player grabbed another player without making an attempt for the ball. Like at the end of the game when you're trying to get the opponent to the free throw line. But you never see that called even when players are grabbing each other around the shoulders, WWE style. I thought you had to at least try to make it look like a reach in foul. Flagrant would constitute physical contact w/o regard to injury. And technical would be any unsportsmanlike activity that didn't fall into either of the other two categories. Last night I saw physical contact during a dead ball called an intentional foul, so now I am also confused. Can anyone clarify?

If picking the region winner in January was difficult, things are only getting more muddy through the first two weeks of February. Anderson appears to be the one to knock off since they haven't lost in the Region. However, with the balance of talent and several solid bench coaches, any of a number of other squads could give them a run for their money. Especially if they get hot. The house should be packed for the regional tournament. Every possible matchup looks like a candidate for a nail biter.

In Kentucky, superindendents have hiring/firing authority. Each school should have a policy on hiring and usually there is a selection committee. The principal has the final notice of what name he/she sends to the superintendent for hire. So really principals have the authority on who to hire. I guess the AD would hire or fire if they were also the principal. Wonder what you would do if your principal were the AD and football coach. Talk about job security.

Do AD's hire and fire? Thought by Kentucky Law that was the the role of the superindendent. Of course the exception would be school principals, they are hired by site based councils. I'll have to look that one up.

When Scott Co. was in district with Grant Co., Williamstown, Owen and Walton? it seems that they didn't always want to "waste" a game against them in the regular season. Then again, Grant knocked them out in the the districts in 2003. The only played one district game that year in the regular season. It was against Grant. I don't think many people saw that happening. It looks like you would want to get some familiarity with the teams in your district even it if is only to schedule them once.

Is there not cap size on the number of students a public school can build for?

I was once told that if Tilghman went 1-9 and beat Mayfield, it would be a winning season, but if they went 9-1 with a loss to Mayfield, it wouldn't be the same. Of course that was when there were no programs in West Kentucky that was even close to the quality of either program, in any class, and they had to look out of state to get enough quality opponents to give them a challenge.

Leaving Mayfield for Tilghman... Seems like that would violate some rule, if not KHSAA, then some law of nature.

These may be the current rules. I have seen an interception returned for a touchdown in a high school game and an intercept fumbled with the offense retaining possession. These were both in the early 90's.

It seems the main idea expressed on this thread is who is being neglected by being left off. There is something to be said, here are my two cents. There are players all over this state who played on teams with losing records, who would be equally deserving to be on this list. However, not many cast votes for the kids on the 1-9 or 0-10 teams. In some cases these kids may have the opportunity to "move" to other districts or pay tuition to go to another school. So instead of complaining about a team only placing 2 or 3 kids on the list while others didn't, I want to give a voice to the kids from the 75% or so schools that did not get recognized at all.

I'm sure they would. But you can't say they played any tougher regular season schedule unless you consider teams with losing records in Eastern Kentucky are better than teams with losing records in Western Kentucky. Sometimes you schedule what there is to schedule. There is no doubt Dudley Hilton is a great coach, he has won everywhere he's been... see Bourbon County. Likewise, Jack Haskins has won everywhere he's been as well... see Heath and Calloway County.

Warren East probably played the 2nd best 4A schedule behind LexCath and Lone Oak beat them. Whoever stepped into the stadium against Catholic today was going to get smoked.

St. X was on the West side of the 6A bracket... maybe that's why they lost.

I though under the new system, there was no "playing up". Wasn't Lone Oak the "smallest" 4A team in the state?
