Mayfieldsportsfan Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 It looks like Mayfield will be looking for three assistant coaches this year. Defensive Coordinator Brad Lawson left to take the same job at Paducah Tilghman. Coach Trayhnam (sp) is retiring again and Coach Jack is calling it quits after so many years.
ADopted ADmiral Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Looks like a job for Toothpick...:thumb:
WKYfootballguy Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Looks like a job for Toothpick...:thumb:  Losing those 3 assistants is like WOW...:creepy: I mean that now leaves Mayfield with two assistants with a total of 2 years of Varsity coaching experience! Mayfield has now lost it's Top 5 assistants over the last 2 years! On another note, congrats to Coach Lawson...He is a great person and even better coach/motivator!
Blockbuster Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Why would Lawson leave Mayfield for Tilghman?
OLDSKOOLPLAYMAKR Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Money? A new start? a Chance to become the head coach?
minnow Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Leaving Mayfield for Tilghman... Seems like that would violate some rule, if not KHSAA, then some law of nature.
westsider Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 In all honesty, Paducah Tilghman and Mayfield are friendly rivals and have a great deal of genuine respect for the other. I think Lawson's decision reflects his belief that it's time to move on. Tilghman wants him and is in a very good position with the current six-class alignment.
Toothpick Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Looks like a job for Toothpick...:thumb: It seems I was passed over for a chance at the now abailable Guy Morris. They really like Morris's at Mayfield
minnow Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I was once told that if Tilghman went 1-9 and beat Mayfield, it would be a winning season, but if they went 9-1 with a loss to Mayfield, it wouldn't be the same. Of course that was when there were no programs in West Kentucky that was even close to the quality of either program, in any class, and they had to look out of state to get enough quality opponents to give them a challenge.
Mayfieldsportsfan Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 Money? A new start? a Chance to become the head coach? Money wasn't an issue and he pulled his name from two head coach searches. It said in the paper yesterday that his wife is pregnant and that he couldn't put in the time that it takes a head coach. He said his family came first and I respect him for that and wish him the best of luck.

Mayfieldsportsfan Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 From the KHSAA website. Mayfield — Job Title: Assistant Football Coach Assistant Football Coach @ Mayfield High School. Teaching Field is Physical Ed. Contact: Joe Morris, 270-247-5582 or joe.morris@mayfield.kyschools.us Ref.#: 4323
GoBigRed Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I agree, Tilghman is in a very good position to win some games this coming year, you should see a great improvement in their defense this coming season. I wish coach Lawson the best in the upcoming season, minus the one game of course, . I really hate to see him go, these shoes will be really hard to fill, wonder what coaches out there are looking for a job??
Toothpick Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 This is a great opportunity for someone, the talent level comming up is better than Mayfield has had in recent years and the program is a high profile one in this part of the state and in class A. I see it as a great stepping stone for a young coach that can use this to elevate his status into a good head coaching position. I think it will draw some quality looks. On the flip side, Mayfield owes most of it's wins since day 1 90 years ago to it's defense and this is certainly been the case in recent years. A Billy G start and the natives will be beating the war drums. This will be the most important hire for Morris and Mayfield in years and may be the difference in what gets put in the hardware case the next couple of seasons. Before word of Lawson's decision to leave I felt very strongly that Mayfield would add a title over the next 3 years, this could change that view quickly for me.
