I'll start us off: Name the last mountain teams to win a state championship in 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A.

Ask HDE questions about Southeast Ky HS football and I bet you cant stump him. Make them legitimate questions....I mean, be fair about it. No tricks. The pressure is on HDE. Dont make me look silly!!

I remember this as well. A lot of good football teams werent in the playoffs back then. Do you remember the old "Dickinson System"??

I agree. This stuff about not having a job waiting doesnt float. What if the man hit the lottery and decided he wanted to live in Boyle County and do nothing? And what if the boy was just a marginal player? Would all this fuss be made? Im not a Boyle fan but fair is fair!!

This game brought about the rule change of a player having to be within so many yards of the huddle when checks in. Danville scored on the old trick play of 2 men check into the huddle and 3 come out of the huddle only one player doesnt leave the field. He simply lined up as a wide out right by the sideline. No one saw him until it was to late.

Cawood beat Lincoln that year...we lost the year before in 81 to Lincoln in the first round. That was during that short time when KHSAA was using sub-districts. At the end of the 81 season, Cawood was 10-0, Lincoln was 10-0, and Highlands was 9-1. In the AP poll, Cawood was #1, Lincoln was #2, and Highlands was #3 and all 3 were in the same region. The opening round of the playoffs saw Lincoln at Cawood, the #1 and #2 teams in the state. Lincoln won 7-0 and then had to play Highlands in the 2cd round. Highlands won that one (14-0 I believe) and went on to win the state. Playoffs were seriously messed up during that short period...it may have only been 2 years.

I appreciate your kind comments and Im not far from disagreeing with you about the state tests. I do, however, place some stock in their Writing portfolios. I also want to be clear that I wasnt knocking my son's abilities on the field. Hr works like a demon in the off season and always gives everything he has. Im just realistic....he isnt going to be an all american and I couldnt be prouder of him if he became a first round draft choice.

You are exactly right about other factors taken into consideration. My so, for instence, is a good, solid, high school player, but we all know these type kids are a dime a dozen. The reason that he is getting a constant stream of football letters is no doubt becuse he has never made a B since kindergarten and mmade a 30 on the ACT. Ha has also be distinguished every year that he has taken the state test. Dont get me wrong...Im proud of his accomplishments on the field but I am much prouder of his accomplishments in the classroom. Yes, those things make a big difference to college recruiters!

I have coached in Tennessee the last 3 years and, after some of the experiences we have had, I dont think I will ever say a bad word about Ky officials. Ky officials are, in my experience, much more professional and much more willing to communicate with the coaches. I am not talking about judgement calls because they are just that...judgement. Im talking about being professional on the field and being on top of the rulebook. Ky officials go to more clinics and they are very good about making coaches understand small rule changes and points of emphasis. It has been my experience that Ky refs simply take their job much more seriously. They have an impossible job and I appreciate the work that they put in for very little compensation. Keep up the good work guys.

That was a huge play. It was 14 to 7 at that point and the int would have made it(probably) 14-14 at the half. Instead, LC goes on to score to make it 21 to 7 at the half, a 14 point swing.

I didnt see the game in question so I dont know what happened. However, most of the time, it isnt totally the winning coach's fault. The coach on the losing end can do a lot to keep the score down as well. A case in point was about six years ago(I wont mention either team by name for sake of embarrassing either), an, at best, average team from Southeast Ky was playing a team from the North that had just started football. The average team jumped on them very fast(picked 2 off returned for scores and a punt returned for a score)....they were subbing in the second quarter. Keep in mind that they only had 27 dressed so they basically had the cheerleaders in, but the young team kept on throwing the ball with the clock stopping on every incompletion. In most cases, they werent taking 30 seconds off the clock with each possession and this scenario continued. It was the case of a very young, inexperienced coach who didnt realize that he wasnt helping their cause any. So, as I said, a coach on the bad end of a blowout can help himself as much as the opposition coach. I would also say that I have been watching football over 35 years in this state and have ran into VERY few coaches who deliberately "run up" the score. Also in defense of the coaches, players should never be instructed not to play their hardest while in the game. This may be one of the only chances a young player gets substantial time in a varsity game and the should be coached the same as the frontliners. I know some will disagree with this but there it is.

Regardless of next weeks game, LCC has had a heck of a year. What they have done in a very short period of time is amazing. Hillard is still working his magic. I havent seen them play but I know Teeny VanHoose was there for the first year or two and I think he still is. If so, he knows a little about winning football as well. The administration put the program in good hands hiring these guys. Good luck next week!

I was very proud of the last Harlan County team in the playoffs. I didnt see the game but Cland had to have played well. Good job Skins! I have to admit, I thought this game would be a blowout because, having seen Hazard twice, the Dogs are a really solid team....they have great skill people, a more than adaquate QB, huge fronts offensively and defensively, and they have a receiver that can take it to the house every time he touches the ball. I was also impressed with their solid tackling and Coach Dixon ran a very organized sideline. Their only real weakness is depth which has historically been a problem but, regardless, they are very good. Congrats to them and a big congrats to Coach Reynolds and his Cland team....they represented the county well!!

Lets go with PLD in the upset, 31-28!! I think Dunbar is hitting on all cylinders right now!

Goodness knows that I would love to see a Cland win, but I have seen Hazard twice, and they are a complete fb team. My heart is with Cland but my head says Hazard 48-20!

Congrats to both teams and special kudos to Coach Tim Browning for an outstanding job with a 2cd year program. He is deserving of Coach of the Year consideration.

Great win for PLD and a little vindication for Coach Hensley who has stayed the course all season. Congrats to Coach Hensley and his staff.

Im not from Hazard but they are an outstanding football team. I dont think they were getting a lot of respect from the north but they made a statement with the LCA win. They may still be proven to be a pretender but it will surprise me. Good luck to Coach Dixon and the Dawgs....I bet cousin Mo is awfully proud of you!!

I like the 4 class setup better but I can live with the 6 classes. What I really dont like is districts playing themselves in the first 2 rounds...it favors the weaker districts.

I dont have a dog in the fight, but I have seen Hazard, Lynn Camp, and Cumberland, and Hazrd is head and shoulders better. Im rooting for the Harlan County boys(Cland), and I am good friends with Dave Mitchell but, facts are facts, Hazard just has to many weapons!! I hope I am wrong!!

I doubt that any coach has ever done more with less over the years than Dave Mitchell. When discussions about the great coaches in the mountains occur, I would say Dave's name doesnt always come up, but it certainly should. His teams are always prepared and play extremely hard. His players also love him which is another indicator of a great coach. Lynn Camp has been very fortunate to have had him for so many years.

If power football is a thing of the past, someone forgot to tell Bell County, Belfry, Russell, Rockcastle County, and a number of others off the top of my head.
