Most significant KY high school football games ever

Featured Replies

The other thread about "favorite games" got me to thinking about the most important or most significant games involving KY high school teams that have ever been played. So, let's here some (with explanations)...

I have a pretty limited knowledge of the history, but a few more recent ones stick out to me (in no particular order)...

2002 Trinity - Male (Class 4A title game): this game marks the only time in KY history (I believe) that two KY teams ever played each other at a time when both were nationally ranked. Also, Trinity's win led to their USA Today final season ranking of 4th nationally, the highest of any KY team in modern times.

2005 LexCath - Highlands (Class 3A regional finals): LexCath "got over the hump" of defeating a NKY powerhouse when they traveled up to Fort Thomas and blanked defending state champ HHS 17-0 en route to the program's first-ever football title. The previous week LexCath defeated the other NKY powerhouse CovCath. This laid to rest any notion that LexCath couldn't "win the big one" and set the stage for (I predict) many state football titles for the Knights.

2002 Trinity - Cincinnati Elder: as the guru said in the "favorite games" thread, this win over the Ohio D1 champion for that year really set the benchmark for top-level play from a KY team in a big-time venue.

2004 Highlands - Boyle County (Class 3A title game): HHS ended Boyle County's amazing streak of consecutive state titles at 5. If Boyle County had won this game and Chuck Smith then left the high school ranks (which he did), it would have created a lot of speculation around the state about whether the combination of Smith and Boyle County was "invincible" in the state playoffs.

I will go along with the 2002 Male-Trinity. Though we have had several good games both before and after, this game, which signalled the end of the Cardinal Stadium era, catapulted KY high school football into a national light and we have all been able to ride that wave since that time.

04 HHS vs. Boyle for other reasons than you mentioned jb. That game signaled to me that KHSAA is as dangerous as a green snake!!!

I wonder how long it's going to take for someone to mention the only National Champions in this thread (this post excluded).

This may be the most significant game. This game showed just how good Kentucky football is at the top levels.

I'm not sure there are any members of BGP old enough to remember those games. :D

It's unfortunate how many people think that HS football in KY started in the late 80's.:D

Meaning, the 1980's, of course. :p  :D

I would list Lou. Central's victory in the 2007 AAA State Championship. Ty Scroggins and his inner city Yellowjackets accomplished alot. Was he not the first African American head coach to win the state title?

This one was pretty sweet to watch on tv. It was even cooler cause I got to play against both teams that season (Trinity in a Scrimmage, Male pre-district). From my era anyways of High School football this might have been one of the best.

As for your next game which was Lex Cath taking down Highlands on the way to their first State Title, that one was great, but the Lex Cath win over the Louisville Male team in '01, early season before Male's QB (Blackerby?) got injured still blows my mind sometimes because it was a victory over one of the big three in such exciting fashion.

This may be the most significant game. This game showed just how good Kentucky football is at the top levels.

Too bad Brian Brohm isn't the QB of all the "top level" teams....that Trinity team was the elite team in the history of KY football; there has been no equal to them.

1960- Highlands victory over Louisville Male 26-20. Both teams went on to win state championships in their respective classes. Highlands in AA and Male in AAA. A Kentucky first where the smaller class team went head to head during the season against the larger class team and prevailed.

Clark County over Trinity 1991

Clark County over St. X 1991

Gave county schools a glimmer of hope, which has since been extinguished.

1995 - Leslie County at Hoptown

Because of Tim Couch's reputation and popularity, the game was attended by CNN, Sports Illustrated, and sixty-eight media outlets from eight states. Hoptown handed them a 63-0 butt-kicking that propelled numerous Tiger players into the national spotlight (Deontey Kenner - Cincinnatti, Miguel Merritt - Alabama, Antrose Penner - Kentucky) along with the entire Hoptown football program.
