The Game I'll Never Forget: Brian Brohm

 

On Dec. 7, 2002, Brian Brohm's Trinity High School in Louisville faced crosstown rival Male High School for Kentucky's Class 4A (largest division) championship. Both teams were 14-0, held the top two rankings in the state, and had combined for 19 state titles in their illustrious histories.

Of course Highlands kicked the stuffing out of them, because as all Lawrence county fans learned, you can't outscore a team that scores on every posession! That Highlands team was one of if not the greatest team in the history of KY football in my opinion.

 

Try the 2000 HHS team, the team Lawrence County played were all juniors. They were even better the next year as seniors.

How did Cawood do in the playoffs that year?

I think 2nd round loss @ Lincoln County. We never could win the big game. Ranked #1 in 85' for most of the season in 3A. Result, 1st round loss vs Danville. 21-13 Still haunts us old guys.

All due RESPECT to those Lynch teams. They are a bit before my time though.

You have to remember that Danville team was the defending AAA champs and then dropped a game to a good Newport squad the next week.

2004 Dixie Heights victory over Trinity. The only time in the Beatty (sp?) era Trinity did not make it to the State Title game.

Cawood beat Lincoln that year...we lost the year before in 81 to Lincoln in the first round. That was during that short time when KHSAA was using sub-districts. At the end of the 81 season, Cawood was 10-0, Lincoln was 10-0, and Highlands was 9-1. In the AP poll, Cawood was #1, Lincoln was #2, and Highlands was #3 and all 3 were in the same region. The opening round of the playoffs saw Lincoln at Cawood, the #1 and #2 teams in the state. Lincoln won 7-0 and then had to play Highlands in the 2cd round. Highlands won that one (14-0 I believe) and went on to win the state. Playoffs were seriously messed up during that short period...it may have only been 2 years.

This game brought about the rule change of a player having to be within so many yards of the huddle when checks in. Danville scored on the old trick play of 2 men check into the huddle and 3 come out of the huddle only one player doesnt leave the field. He simply lined up as a wide out right by the sideline. No one saw him until it was to late.

I don't know about that. There are a lot of former state champion teams who could claim to be the best ever. Coach Paulie Miller's 1961 undefeated Flaget Braves team (AAA as that was the largest class in KY at that time & featuring future UK QB Rick Norton) and a slew of other teams. Up until Miller left and later Flaget was closed, the Braves beat the Rocks like a drum. That was before Trinity football became what it is today, ... the most dominant team in the KHSAA, but unless you have seen them all (and I have not) it is hard to say who was the best ever and we will probably never know.

 

I can't speak to the 60s, but I'd take my chances with Brohm and the evolution of football, specifically the forward pass.
