1995 - Leslie County at Hoptown

 

Because of Tim Couch's reputation and popularity, the game was attended by CNN, Sports Illustrated, and sixty-eight media outlets from eight states. Hoptown handed them a 63-0 butt-kicking that propelled numerous Tiger players into the national spotlight (Deontey Kenner - Cincinnatti, Miguel Merritt - Alabama, Antrose Penner - Kentucky) along with the entire Hoptown football program.

 

Was that Tim's junior year and are you sure about the year? I thought Tim was undefeated his senior year (which I thought was 1996) until he lost to Highlands late in the playoffs. Then again, as someone now eligible for membership in AARP, my memory isn't the best any more.

Couch's crew was undefeated his Junior year. They had a Baker kid who caught everything Couch threw at him.

 

I believe Couch lost to Hopkinsville and Sheldon Clark prior to their defeat to Highlands.

Leslie county vs anyone. Early 90's when Greg Couch (Tims brother) Lines up in a four wide shotgun offense any throws for 300 yds. Absolutely sparked a revolution in Kentucky.

Couch's senior season was 1995.

I agree that Highlands 26-20 victory over Louisville Male in 1960 was a pivotal game in Kentucky football history.

 

The win established Highlands as the top team in the state and cemented the school's reputation as a football powerhouse. Highlands was on a 50-game regular season winning streak over a five year period, and that season also defeated the best team in the east (Ashland), the best team in the west (Bowling Green) and the best team in Lexington (Lafayette) in route to the Class AA state championship.

 

Male entered the game ranked No. 1 in the state. Highlands was ranked No. 2. The game went back and forth right down to the final play of the game. It was a near perfect game by both teams.

 

A number of Highlands players went on to have outstanding college careers, including Roger Walz (UK), Jim Burt (WKU), John Burt (WKU), Joe Ross (Air Force Academy), Bob Steinhauser (UC), Alan Berry (Duke) and Jim Ullman (Wittenberg). Jim Burt was drafted by the LA Rams but decided to attend medical school.

I obviously disagree, as Hal Mumme came much later than Mike Whitaker/Greg Couch. Mumme came in Tims Sophomore year in College. Leslie was 4 wide passing for 300 at least 6 years earlier. Not to mention Bob Redman at Male.

1984 4A State Championship Game Christian County vs Ballard. Christian County wins and becomes the only school to win the 4A title twice outside Louisville.

Not certain of its significance but the 1979 Belfry/Highlands semi final contest at Highlands brought about two rule changes the following season. Its rare that one contest could bring about two rule changes.

2006 Male ve Trinity in playoffs, both teams took turns leading with the Rocks coming back from 10 down to win, this really was the State Championship Game for 2006 # 17

There were isolated teams that were throwing the ball in the early 1990s. When Mumme came to UK, a great number of programs started emulating his offensive scheme or working some of his concepts into their own system.

Two that have always stuck out in my mind...

 

1 - Holy Cross - 15, Trinity - 14 . . . This ended our 50 game win streak. It was an eery Friday, our kicker Brian Brewer was out with broken ribs, and we had to kick a sophomore, he missed two chip shot fg's and an extra point....

 

2 - Clark County - 28, Trinity - 20 ....Arguably the best "county" 4A team that I ever saw. It was a knock down drag out type of game, with Trinity running out of time in the red zone of Clark County....

Wasn't it Highlands entire 1998 season of games that prompted a new rule change later in the following years, regarding a "running clock'"?
