Not certain of its significance but the 1979 Belfry/Highlands semi final contest at Highlands brought about two rule changes the following season. Its rare that one contest could bring about two rule changes.

 

Specifically, what were the two rule changes?

Was that Tim's junior year and are you sure about the year? I thought Tim was undefeated his senior year (which I thought was 1996) until he lost to Highlands late in the playoffs. Then again, as someone now eligible for membership in AARP, my memory isn't the best any more.

 

1995 was his Senior year. I remember watching the playoff game at Highlands when ESPN flew in their helicopter.

One for sure was the tear-away jerseys. As a youngster at that game I can still remember the Belfrey running backs coming to the sidelines with just a few strings holding the jersey together. I'm not sure of the other one.

Too bad Brian Brohm isn't the QB of all the "top level" teams....that Trinity team was the elite team in the history of KY football; there has been no equal to them.

 

I don't know about that. There are a lot of former state champion teams who could claim to be the best ever. Coach Paulie Miller's 1961 undefeated Flaget Braves team (AAA as that was the largest class in KY at that time & featuring future UK QB Rick Norton) and a slew of other teams. Up until Miller left and later Flaget was closed, the Braves beat the Rocks like a drum. That was before Trinity football became what it is today, ... the most dominant team in the KHSAA, but unless you have seen them all (and I have not) it is hard to say who was the best ever and we will probably never know.

Two that have always stuck out in my mind...

 

1 - Holy Cross - 15, Trinity - 14 . . . This ended our 50 game win streak. It was an eery Friday, our kicker Brian Brewer was out with broken ribs, and we had to kick a sophomore, he missed two chip shot fg's and an extra point....

 

2 - Clark County - 28, Trinity - 20 ....Arguably the best "county" 4A team that I ever saw. It was a knock down drag out type of game, with Trinity running out of time in the red zone of Clark County....

 

That was a special group for GRC that season, no doubt.

Highlands 99 played a Lawrence County team that had the most potent running back reciever tandem in the history of KY (PLEASE ARGUE WITH ME ON THAT ONE!!! I DARE YOU!!!)

 

Of course Highlands kicked the stuffing out of them, because as all Lawrence county fans learned, you can't outscore a team that scores on every posession! That Highlands team was one of if not the greatest team in the history of KY football in my opinion.

The 1987 HHS vs CCH game at Cov-Cath played on Friday night without lights. Not many games or if any games were played on that field after the one really,really dark evening in Park Hills. It was awful!!!!!!!:irked: Oh!!! excluding this past year when CCH and Beechwood played with portable lights.

I think it was 42 which tied for then 2nd place in KHSAA with Danville. Boyle later won 47 straight to take over that spot behind Trinity.

I actually enjoyed that game. Down late 20 - 7, CovCath rallies for a 21 - 20 win. Good times.

^Breathitt was doing this before Leslie and the Couch's.

 

I believe Estill County with the Neices (spelling?) at qb, threw it around quite a bit as well in the early 90s.

Shelby - Boone 87 4A title game. I believe it marks the last time that the game contained 2 county schools

^ That may be true....in 1996 Nelson County beat Paul Dunbar in the finals marking the last time a non Jefferson County team won the big class title.

1984 4A State Championship Game Christian County vs Ballard. Christian County wins and becomes the only school to win the 4A title twice outside Louisville.

 

A Huge accomplishment for Coach Goble. That was a significant victory for a public, non Louisville school to win the largest class in football.
