Lynn Camp's David Mitchell

Featured Replies

Saw where the earlier thread on the Williamsburg-Lynn Camp game was closed. Anyway, I had to weigh in about what I heard last night on the radio.

Rick Shaw and Louis Stout were doing the KHSAA Scoreboard show, and if you've ever heard the show, you know they line up coaches ahead of time to call in and give game reports.

Last night, David Mitchell was set up to call in, and the hosts, completely blind to how things went down in the game, asked Mitchell for his recap.

Let me just say that it was pretty gutsy on Mitchell's part to come on the air live and talk about what had to be a devastating double gut-punch of both losing the game and Roskopf. How he held it together in such an emotional time is beyond me. It was clear that Stout and Shaw had little idea how to deal with such an interview, and were completely floored when Mitchell mentioned that not only had his team lost a heartbreaker, but lost their top back to a torn ACL.

But in their wisdom, they let Mitchell speak until it sounded like he was going to break down with emotions, then broke in at an appropriate time to let Mitchell get off the air and gather his thoughts.

Most coaches would've blown off talking live to a statewide audience after such a blow, and few people would blame them. Hats off to you, Coach Mitchell. I'll be cheering for Lynn Camp the rest of the way. Good luck to Joe Roskopf; get that knee healed up quick! :thumb:

I've known Coach Mitchell to be a class guy for a long time. This did nothing to change my mind! Lynn Camp is lucky to have him.

Mitchell is a good coach and in a rivalry like that it does take a big guy to call in after such a rough night. This has always been one of those rivalries where Lynn Camp and Williamsburg will run the score as high as they can on each other and is just a huge rivalry, but he is a good coach and I could never see him blowing off a commitment like calling in that he had made even if they had lost by 70.

Coach Mitchell is a class act...:thumb:

If you know Dave, you will know his word is his bond. He always keeps his commitments and does his best to mold kids into keeping theirs and learning that you are responsible for you.

He will always take the time to talk up the school, the program and the kids, whatever the situation.

We have been lucky to have someone here for this long that cares about the whole package and not just the W/L record. He has spent most of his life in the school, from attending as a student to the last 3 decades as a coach. He is a living testimony to commitment.:thumb:

I was impressed with how he did handle everything last night

I was very impressed also. How can they tell it is a torn ACL that early. Would they not need an MRI.

I attended a Beechwood away game with the Williams family. Their son tore his ACL during the game and it was one long sad ride home as , at that point, a torn ACL was thought to be career ending.

The story has a happy ending as Bobby re-habbed the knee, went to Georgetown where he was a first team little AA and played on a National Championship team. Tell the coach and player to keep their head up and keep persevering.

You can't really, but that is what it looks like to be. Hopefully not, because Joe is such a great kid, and one of the best players in the state this year, hopefully his career doesn't end like that. Coach Mitchell is a class act. He takes every loss hard, no question losing to Williamsburg hurts, I'm mean lets face it, we hate them, but coach is more hurt about what happened Joe personally more then anything.

You could definitely hear his voice quiver a lot more when talking about the injury.

It was a doctor's EARLY prognosis. The MRI was scheduled for today. Could be something else, so we'll see.

Coach Mitchell has my respect because he believes in his team, and will not back down from anyone, anytime, anywhere. He is very efficient. He gets the most out of what little he was to work with, and has stood the test of time at L.C.

Coach Mitchell has always been easy to find. His kids dodge no one on Friday nights and I would have been shocked if he would have tanked on an interview. He has always impressed me with his genuine concern for his kids and this injury I'm sure is devastating to Coach Mitchell. The Roskopf kid has been a warrior and I hope the MRI does not reveal a tear. God bless him and his family in what has been a tough week.

I have known Coach Mitchell for a long time, he is a class act.

I know how he fells about losing his best player.

Keep working hard coach Mitchell.
