I could type for an hour here. Like you, I was pleasantly surprised with the QB and I agree that, with the size up front, should establish a decent running game. The secondary definitely needs work and I know they will get it. The key, as usual, is staying healthy. They cant afford to lose a human. Im looking forward to it also!:thumb:

You are 100% correct about this entire county having a lot of good people working with our young people. Talking in the positive about one school in no way suggests negatively about other people. After all, it was a Harlan/Cumb Gap forum. If I offended anyone it certainly wasnt my inention in the least and you should be proud!!

That last post was made by me at 2:25 AM while I was basically half asleep. Although I absolutely meant everything that I said, I should make it clear that those job offers were made over the course of JB's 20t year career and they occured long before the current coaches in question, both of whom are doing a great job. After reading this post this morning, I felt it important to say this. The programs at Hazard and Perry Central are both in great hands and I sincerely apologize if any offense was taken. That certainly was not my intent! :thumb:

I told myself that I wought never go into this tirade but, honestly, w's and l's are really almost insignificant to me. Dont get me wrong....I would be happy beyond words if HHS won every game but thats not what I sent my son there for. I wanted my son to see the value of discipline and work ethic and working toward a goal and experiencing that feeling when the goal is achieved and, just as importantly, experiencing that feeling when you fall short of your goals. And I dont know of any other man that is a better teacher of those life lessons than JB Donahue. He sincerely cares about his players and bends over backwards for them. JB is a good disciplnarian and he is also the first to give them a hug when needed. In short, regardless of the outcome of the season via wins/losses, I know that my son is going to have a positive HS football experience. Harlan HS is very forunate to have a man lke JB. Many people dont realize the number of jobs that he has turned down over the years. He was offered the Hazard, Perry Central, and at least one other that I cant remember. I, for one, am glad he stayed!!:thumb:

As bad as I hate to, I'll take up a little for CG. I spent 3 years coaching in TN and nobody pulls any punches on either teams QB. I was amazed at the first scrimmage I participated in....the play wasnt over until the QB went down. After that, I get my whistle in my mouth and anytime they laid a hand on our QB, I blew it like we were having an air raid during WWII. The other coaches didnt seem to be happy but, I assure you, I didnt lose any sleep over it!

Another positive (positives are all I'll comment on) was HHS pass protection. CG was stunting and blitzing literally every play and I thouhgt the HHS line and backs did a pretty good job of picking them up. I didnt much like that they were blitzing some much in the first scrimmage. It is supposed to be a learning situation and GP was stemming and running inside twists and I thought I even saw a zone blitz or 2. I dont see how that helps their DL with pass rush techniques but each to their own!

Getting back in serious mode, the good receiver is a real threat and he runs extremely well after the catch(YAC) but he had better learn to go down quicker when he is wrapped up. He sure doesnt need to take any unnecessary hits!!

I will add a couple thoughts. Firstly, the dropped balls in the first game situation in front of a good crowd (for a scrimmage) wouldnt be keeping me up hights just yet. They will get better. And you are right, HHS had some busted coverages but I know JB will agree that, at this time of year, it is better to have coverage screw ups rather than being out athleted. Coaching will fix out of position DB's! The key to this season id going to be the 2 H's.......Health and Heart!!:thumb:

I understand what you are saying but the names of the schools are Harlan HS and Harlan County HS. The "independent" refers to the entire Harlan City system!:thumb: However, for others around the state I will try to differentiate!

Im really amazed that Ky HS's have that many in the NFL. Pleasantly surprised!!

In Harlan County, transportation to and from practice has always been provided, at least it has been since the mid 70's (thats as far as I can remember). From Evarts,we ran 2 buses after practice. At Cawood, 2 buses also ran. At Cumberland, Im not sure if there was 2 buses, but there was at least 1 taking kids home after practice. All these buses were for all athletics. For instance, kids staying after school working out for another sport could ride the football bus home. The buses also ran during the summer bringing kids to and from practice and buses also ran taking kids home after games as well. I think that eventually, after school tutoring also utilized these buses!!

I dont have a dog in the fight and I didnt see Beechwood or LCA last year (I missed the 1A state championship) but I did see Hazard twice. They were extremely athletic and only really lost one player as I understand. Although depth is a question mark, they should be rock solid!!
