You make valid points and we have discussed this many times. Im not talking about starters waiting their turn, Im talking about the "marginal" player that would never experienced HS football had it not been at a small school. Many players will achieve anywhere but I have had them that I could not have got on the field at a big school. Freshman and JV ball are great for young ones, but what happens to that senior thats been there 4 years. I could make a roll player out of him at the small school but what happens to him at the big school?

Think of the kids that wont even play at the big school....its heartbreaking! High school football is not about winning and losing, its about developing work ethic, character, discipline, teamwork, working toward a goal, learning how to deal with losses, learning to be graceful in victory, and a thousand other positives that are learned on the field, regardless of the wins or losses. Just think how many of the kids playing this year at Evarts, Cawood, and Cland that wouldnt even be on the team when they realized that their playing time would be very little if any. I think we sometimes forget that the schools are there for the kids, not the other way around. Its a very sad situation.

Im from Eastern Ky, but it makes me proud to have 2 teams in the national top 25. Trinity no doubt deserves to be there and, after looking at the St. X-Male score, it looks like X deserves the high ranking also(no disrespect to Male.) They are an outstanding program also. Good luck to all three.

I will admit this score surprised me, but I dont know why. Any team Hillard Howard coaches is going to lay it all on the line. Good win for Hillard and Letcher. Good luck to Letcher and Clay the rest of the season.

Dave Mitchell has always been one of the most under-rated coaches in the mountains. I quarantee he will have a good game plan ready. He has built a good program for years under some very adverse conditions.

Ive been paying attention to Pulaski SW since Coach Anderson arrived. I am a complete outsider and have no dog in the fight, but I have to say that Coach A dodges absolutely nobody when it comes to scheduling. I dont know his career record, but I quarantee that it would be at least a third again better had he chosen not to play someof the monsters he has played over the years not to mention that bear of a district he is in. I have never met him, but I have nothing but respect for the way he handles his program.

Is this Gallatin's 2cd or 3rd year of varsity ball? Either way, they are coming along nicely despite the bad loss last friday. Good win for Frankfort.

Although Pineville seems to be much improved this year, Evarts should get this one. It will be Evarts at 2-0 in the district and 4-0 on the season. Good luck to both teams.

Harlan wil be OK. Of their 3 losses, Cawood is 2-1 with a big win saturday over Fleming, Lee,VA. is an excellent team as they showed friday by beating Mboro. Their 3rd loss came to a very good Evarts team on the road. Harlan will make the playoffs again. A win friday night over Hazard would put them right back in the saddle and even a loss to Hazard wouldnt be completely devastating to Harlan's playoff chances. After Hazard, winning 2 of district opponents Pineville, Jenkins, and Cumberland gets them in the playoffs again. Its much to early to write anyone off yet.

Where is the Evarts-Hazard game this year? That could determine the district winner if the wildcats can knock off Cunberland and thats a big "if."

Unbelievable! Thanks for the info. I had heard that one before also now that you explained it. That was 74 and I believe that Corbin won 2A in 76. It was a good series with Corbin during that period. It just seems like there werent many weak sisters back then. Mboro, Corbin, Pineville, Lynch, Harlan, Evarts, Cumberland....all of them had solid programs during that time period.

Waggle, I dont know the details of the story but Im sure there are members out there that do. Come to think of it, Im not even sure it was Belfry. I might have dreamed that game....I was thinking it was in the early 70's.

Beating Leslie would be a heck of a step in the right direction for McCreary. It should be interesting.

Rojas, I have heard Coach Hunter talk about that Corbin game on more than one occasion. It seems like there was another contraversial play that went against Evarts other the the ones mentioned but I cant remember what happened. Also, I didnt realize Evarts beat Lynch during a state title season. Great info. Can you remember any of the details of the loss to Belfry in the playoffs when the electricity went out at Evarts and they had to finish the second half at Harlan? I believe Evarts was ahead at halftime.

Rojas4, you are absolutely right about Evarts being 2A at one point and then obviously not in the same district. When I said "always" I was refering to both teams being in the same district since before the creation of the "Battle for the Bucket" concept. Evarts had some great battles with 2A rivals Mboro and Corbin in the 60's and early 70's and they more than held their own. There was a lot of great football played in Harlan County in those days. Harlan and Evarts had some great teams and lets not forget Cumberland and the great teams that Lynch had in the day. I agree with Pappy. Its very sad that this is the end of some great rivalries.

Sorry. Hit the reply button before I was finished. Bottom line is the coal bucket trophy should go to winner of the Evarts-Harlan game, regardless of the date it is played each year, which is what both coaches assumed would happen the year in question. Harlan won the game on the field and deserved the bucket. The Evarts coaching staff and players were very embarrased of what occured. As someone said earlier, the bucket was held hostage that year and neither team received it. It was a very embarrasing situation.

The annual Evarts-Harlan game has always been a district game. The date of the games in the district were decided by a draw each year and the game always had to be rescheduled to be played on Labor day weekend. This is a much more difficult process than many people realize. It often meant the moving around of several games each year. It required a lot of work and a lot of phone calls to make it happen but on the year in question, it was simply impossible. The coaches decided to schedule a double-header on Labor Day weekend(which Evarts and Harlan both won by the way)
