Covington Holy Cross 85 Campbell County 83 (OT)

Recommended Posts

Holy Cross improves to 9-7 with the win. Campbell County drops to 8-10. The game went back and forth in the 2nd half with several lead changes. The Indians hurt themselves at the free throw line late in regulation and in overtime but we able to pull out the victory.

Campbell County has a nice team. They have great balance, similar to Holy Cross. I was impressed with Hegyi and the Freshman Hamilton especially Really nice players and fun to watch. Good luck rest of the way.

How on earth is it that we seem to hear very little discussion here in the 9th Region regarding HC's Freshman Jacob Meyer?

Man, the kid is an incredible player, and take notice that he was the all around high scorer in this game with 28, and this isn't the first time this season that he has been.

Certainly a career worth keeping an eye on.

Meyer and Hamilton are the top scoring freshmen in NKY, very special players, always fun to see them in action. Both have bright futures. If camels hit 2 free throws at the end with 1 second left game is over. Great game by both squads.

Holy Cross came in shooting 66% from the FT line with Campbell Co shooting 68%. I do not have the state leaders %s but would think those would rank in the bottom half of the state. Not sure though.

One thing to also note about missed free throws too is the missed front ends of the bonus. Holy Cross missed 2 crucial 1/1's in the last 2 minutes of regulation when they could have extended their lead. Campbell Co did miss a free throw with 1.2 sec left too. Missed free throws aside both teams played hard for 36 minutes. All you can ask.

Using those numbers, Holy Cross was 62% on FT and Campbell County 69%. What is the usual average on FT for high school teams?

Well just looking at the 9th Region, the average free throw percentage for the 19 teams who have stats is 61.5%. Holy Cross ranks 9th which is in the top 1/2 of the region at 66.1%. Not terrible, not great.

Was taking Niehaus free throw away the right call? Refs gave him the ball too shoot before Camels was able to sub for man who fouled out!

Go to page 54 and read about points scored while a disqualified player was on the floor.

He's raw and has a huge upside. I'm not sure how well he shoots it since he gotvto the hole at will.

Gotta feel terrible for the Scott program. Brutal loss when Meyer transferred this past offseason. He’s a program changing player with a ridiculously high ceiling.

Now Koz needs to find a way to get him to play football bc the young man - as good of a basketball player as he is - is an even better football player.

He’ll be fun to watch. Happy for the Indians, but feel terrible for the Scott program who keep losing top young players to other 9th Region schools.

Don't feel too bad. They've had their fair share of kids who chose Scott over other high schools. You have to remember Meyer was an 8th grader last year so calling him a "transfer" is wrong.

Let me setup the Niehaus free throw situation because this game may not have gone to overtime.

Jordan Gross committed his 5th foul with Holy Cross leading 66-63. The buzzer sounded for a foul out. Both teams and everyone knew he fouled out. Gross went to the CC bench. A few seconds later the referees put the ball in play to Nate Niehaus at the line who made the front end of the bonus to make the score 66-62. Prior to getting handed the ball for the 2nd free throw the referees realize Campbell Co only has 4 players on the floor. The referees huddle and determine the free throw is taken away and the 5th player (replacement for Gross) is allowed to come in with no technical foul. Niehaus proceeds to miss the front end the 2nd time so score remained 66-63. I thought the call was incorrect until I'm proven otherwise. I didn't think there was a scenario where you can go back once the ball is put in play, a point scored, and then reverse it. Any refs out there know the rule. Maybe I'm wrong.
