This deal reminds me of some of the trades the Braves have made. It seems like they always have a wealth of young highly rated pitchers. They trade away the ones they like less (e.g. Chris Reitsma). The Reds are about 7 starters deep right now and here is how I believe they see the depth chart ... Cueto, Latos, Arroyo, Chapman, Leake, Bailey, Wood. So they are trading starter #7 for a possible closer.

What makes Wood very promising? He throws with the wrong hand? That's about it. His 2nd year in the league everyone figured him out and the numbers reflected that. Sure he could be good down the road but at this point hes not a starter for the Reds so it fills a position we need badly and at a low cost. At what point do you stop rebuilding and start trying to win? I'm tired of rebuilding every single year.

Production in 2012 is the key. Walt is going all in on the coming season. Personally, I welcome it. The Reds have been building a team for 10 years. Now is the time to try and win. We'll think about 2013, 14, etc. after 2012 is over.

Relief pitching isn't sexy, but it's great to have guys that can routinely pin them down in the 7th or 8th or a guy who can slam the door reliably in the 9th. Starting pitching is great and all, but I think we are flush at the moment.

Marshall was excellent last year and fits the set up role very nicely.

 

I think most Reds fans have an inflated opinion of Wood. He would throw a couple of nice games but would get bombed in quite a few, as well. I think his ERA when he was sent to Triple A this year was over 5. In addition, he is a fly ball pitcher, which does not portend to a long shelf life in GABP.

 

The Reds have a chance this year and have to make a move. Last year, they stood pat and it burned them.

I read elsewhere that the Mariners have let it be known that Brandon League could be available, and that the Reds have expressed interest.

How many believe that Chapman will end up in the rotation? Wasn't the plan to stretch him out in Winter ball which failed due to injury? I think he'll end up in the pen again.

Is there any chance the Reds try to make Marshall a starter again? He hasn't been since 06 and never really threw over 125 innings. I'm okay with this if they are considering him as a closer and the minor leaguers are nobodys. You can rest assured that Hamilton and Corcino are not part of this deal.

LeCure had a 3.80 ERA in 4 starts. Couldn't he fill in if there is an injury to one of the starters and Bailey or Chapman don't work out? His numbers were actually better than Wood's numbers.
